Dr. Jeffrey Thorne, United States
Your physician does not have to be an award-winning researcher with a heart of gold, but it certainly helps.
Jeffrey Thorne always expected to pursue a research-focused career and began on that path, earning several honors along the way. But something was missing—the human element.
Although he enjoyed laboratory work and advancing scientific knowledge through research, connecting with people and providing compassionate care brought him true fulfillment. He therefore returned to the clinical path that had drawn him to medical school and followed his passion into fertility care, helping couples and individuals pursue their goals of parenthood.
He is certain it was the best decision he ever made.
“Being there during the difficult moments is just as important as being there during the highs,” says Dr. Thorne, a reproductive endocrinologist at RMA Philadelphia. “That is what drives me and keeps me going.”
Dr. Thorne treats patients in the Philadelphia area who are seeking fertility care or fertility preservation. He specializes in minimally invasive reproductive surgery, including advanced hysteroscopy and laparoscopy.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. As an undergraduate, he received a Howard Hughes research fellowship and studied abroad at the University of Regensburg in Germany.
After graduation, he remained at Wesleyan to earn a master’s degree in developmental and stem cell biology. He then attended the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut.
Dr. Thorne completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. During this time, he conducted research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, and received the Dr. James Egan Outstanding Resident Research Award—one of several honors and recognitions he has earned throughout his career.
After choosing to specialize in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI), Dr. Thorne completed his REI fellowship at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and earned a master’s degree in clinical and translational research in 2019.
This ultimately brought him to RMA, where Dr. Thorne found his patient-first, compassionate approach to care to be an excellent fit.
“Prioritizing patients’ needs and wishes is important in medicine,” Dr. Thorne says, “but it is especially important in assisted reproduction, and RMA practices this kind of care.”
“That is what truly drew me here—along with all the remarkable research conducted by our physicians and scientists.”
Dr. Thorne is doing work he genuinely values, calling patients day and night to check not only how their treatment is progressing, but also how they are feeling.
“Supporting families throughout their fertility journey is deeply meaningful,” he says.
He has not left academia behind. Dr. Thorne teaches at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and trains obstetrics and gynecology residents at Abington Memorial Hospital and Temple University, helping ensure that the next generation of reproductive endocrinologists excels in both medicine and compassionate care.
“I have an extraordinary job—I can help my patients experience the gift of parenthood, a truly life-changing event, and I am fortunate to be part of it.”
