Dr. Nicholas Spirtos, United States
Dr. Spirtos is a clinically focused physician. Whenever possible, he begins with simple infertility treatments, which are often successful without initially requiring more complex and costly options. Guided by the principle that less can sometimes be more, patients receive treatment tailored to their budget and personal beliefs. Most patients complete infertility treatment without in vitro fertilization.
“I give couples options, and they choose the most appropriate course of action,” says Dr. Spirtos. “Every pregnancy is a miracle, but some pregnancies require couples to work hard. I enjoy a challenge, and I am willing to work alongside them.”
After completing an infertility fellowship at Wayne State University in Detroit in 1987, Dr. Spirtos became the 64th specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility to be board certified nationally. He then helped Akron City Hospital, now part of Summa Health System, develop its first in vitro fertilization program. He delivered his first IVF baby in 1985, five years after the first IVF birth in the United States.
Dr. Spirtos is an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northeast Ohio Medical University and has contributed to medical journals on many infertility-related topics. He has also presented scientific reports to local and national colleagues and peers.
Dr. Spirtos formerly served as director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and the IVF/Embryo Transfer Program at Akron City Hospital, where he remains affiliated. He is a past president of the Akron Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and a member of several other professional associations.
Born in Chicago to a family of Greek heritage, Dr. Spirtos comes from a family of physicians that includes his father and four uncles. He operates his fertility center according to the enduring values instilled by his parents. He emphasizes integrity, cost-effectiveness, and a caring, family-like environment for those seeking his help. Except during vacations, Dr. Spirtos works seven days a week. As he explains, women ovulate seven days a week!
Patients see Dr. Spirtos at every visit because he personally performs ultrasound examinations and other procedures. By handling day-to-day care, he gains a better understanding of the nuances of each couple's situation. His experience has shown him that small details can point to the personalized treatment strategy most likely to result in pregnancy. His infertility treatments have resulted in nearly 6,000 births.
“I give my patients an honest opinion and help them make informed decisions,” Dr. Spirtos notes.
