Dr. David Austin Schirmer III, United States
D. Austin Schirmer, MD, is an assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine and a specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. His interest in treating patients with infertility and other reproductive disorders began early in his career as a medical student, when he found helping patients build families deeply rewarding. He specializes in treating infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, and reproductive endocrine disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome, primary ovarian insufficiency, and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea. He also sees patients interested in preserving fertility, whether for personal reasons or before medications or treatments that may adversely affect fertility, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Before joining the Emory faculty, Dr. Schirmer completed his residency and fellowship training at Emory University Hospital. He served as a guest researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he conducted research on ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and assisted with other projects related to public health and infertility. He also published research on fertility among pediatric cancer survivors with the Aflac fertility team at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Dr. Schirmer is passionate about teaching medical students, residents, and fellows and has been recognized for this work on many occasions by the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Emory University School of Medicine.
Dr. Schirmer grew up and attended medical school in Connecticut and moved to Atlanta to begin his obstetrics and gynecology residency. He enjoys skiing, cycling, golf, and spending time with his wife and children.
