Doctor Introduction

Dr. Mary Ann Sorra, United States

Mary Ann Sorra was born and raised in Baltimore, and her family is originally from the Philippines. She earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Maryland. In 2001, she completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. Before partnering with Saint Agnes to establish Natural Fertility Care, she worked in private practice and taught obstetrics and gynecology residents at Sinai Hospital. Dr. Sorra stopped prescribing artificial contraceptives in March 2009 and adopted natural family planning in her medical practice.

She believes this transition made her a better physician, better able to care for the whole person, body and soul. She trained at the Pope Paul VI Institute and became a medical consultant in NaPro Technology in April 2011. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She and her husband, Jack Reybold, live in Catonsville.

I was very disappointed to learn that the doctor will not even see you if you are over 42; I am 44. They will not take even a moment to review your concerns. I believe this should be disclosed on the website so people do not waste their time.

I requested an appointment a week in advance and received confirmation. Before the appointment, I received forms to complete and did so. On the day of the appointment, I was notified that it had been canceled. When I called, they said my phone number did not work, although it always has, and I had to reschedule for a week later. When they could not reach me by phone, no one tried to email me. If this indicates the level of care to expect from this facility, I would be wary.

The reception staff were very friendly, and my visit was quick. However, I would like St. Agnes staff to receive weight-sensitivity training. For larger people, especially those working to recover from an ED, a casual comment—or calculating my weight gain in front of me—can cause significant stress and ultimately be counterproductive. This is a small issue, but improving it would mean a great deal to larger patients. Otherwise, I like visiting this location. The doctor makes an effort to remember me as an individual and answers all my questions. It is refreshing to be in a space that understands women's bodies.

My experience at St. Agnes Hospital was wonderful! Every staff member was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Dr. Mary Ann Sola was especially impressive. She answered all my questions clearly, and I greatly appreciated the thorough, compassionate care during my visit. Dr. Sola even provided additional information about preventing pregnancy without birth control pills, condoms, or an IUD. My fiancé and I are excited to learn about Marquette University! Thank you all!

I felt dismissed and unheard. I have made every lifestyle adjustment I can because: - My diet is restricted, with tendencies similar to avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). - I cannot afford more natural shampoo. - I cannot access nonplastic containers, and even if I could, they might not be microwave-safe or affordable. Both are essential for the diet I need because of chronic illness and dietary restrictions, especially microwave use. - My sleep is fragmented. Because of developmental disabilities and chronic illness, I cannot sleep continuously, although I get enough total sleep. - I have established a regular routine. - I experience ongoing environmental stress, but use coping skills to manage what I can control. I wanted a weight-neutral approach to weight loss, but the modern science behind this approach and its relationship to fertility were ignored. The doctor told me to focus only on the intensity of withdrawal bleeding, rather than restoring my natural hormone levels by more consistently counteracting estrogen. Medical options to reduce inflammation or promote ovulation with hormonal support were not considered. My functional iron deficiency was completely ignored. Since I currently do not appear to have insulin resistance or hyperglycemia, metformin or inositol may not help either. Overall, my situation was oversimplified, and nearly all my concerns were dismissed. I went to Dr. Sora seeking Natural Procreative Technology (NaPro), but that was not what I received. I may continue cyclic progesterone treatment, but if my hormone levels need more extensive support, I may see a reproductive endocrinologist.

It took me months to write this because I needed time to recover from this painful experience. Be smarter than I was and do your research before seeing this doctor. I will not share everything that happened because the doctor took no action and did not take it seriously. I will say that anyone going through a vulnerable, emotional fertility journey should be careful. On the other hand, Nurse Victoria is a saint, and I am very grateful for the short time I spent with her. Her patience and willingness to explain things turned my nightmarish experience into something positive. Read the reviews—they are 100% accurate and match my experience exactly.

I have seen Dr. Sora for five years. She is very professional, thorough, and understanding. Her staff are also extremely helpful.

Very disappointed! During my appointment, she attended to another patient.

I saw Dr. Sora because my husband and I had experienced difficulty conceiving and miscarriage, and I needed a compassionate, thorough doctor to help us address this. From the beginning, Dr. Sora was abrupt and dismissive. She interrupted me while I explained my history, showed no compassion when I discussed the emotional impact of fertility problems and miscarriage, and seemed frustrated that I had not tracked my cycle in the way she preferred before meeting her. I had hoped she would help me understand this during the appointment, but she did not. I had been tracking OPKs and BBT through an app that allows providers to access the information on a tablet or iPad. She did not even try and repeated that I should have written it down on paper for her. She also seemed frustrated that records from another facility had not arrived, even though I requested them three weeks earlier, which was also disappointing to me. Moreover, I contacted her office 5 days before the appointment to ask whether the records had arrived and whether I could send them myself, but received no response. She showed no compassion, shared no useful information, and did not make me feel heard. She gave no rationale or explanation for the expected effects of one treatment plan she proposed. I had eagerly waited to finally have a doctor with a thorough Christian perspective help me. Because I did not have all the information, knowledge, and preparation she seemed to expect, I felt judged and extremely irritated. I am not a doctor, but I am highly educated and communicate well, yet she made me feel foolish. I sought her expertise so I would not have to find every answer myself. I worry about other patients under her care who are trying to understand the complexities of fertility. I will never return to this practice, and if you value a caring or flexible doctor, I caution you against doing so.

Posting under a pseudonym to remain anonymous, but I would not recommend Dr. Sora. She has poor bedside manner and is very judgmental. When I expressed concern about a family history of infertility, she also gave me incorrect information about fertility. I always left her office crying, and several other young women I know had the same experience.
