Dr. Angela Leung, United States
Dr. Angela Leung is a reproductive endocrinologist who helps men, women, and couples seeking to have children, preserve fertility, or address reproductive health concerns. In addition to helping patients achieve successful outcomes, she focuses on building close relationships so they feel safe being vulnerable, asking questions confidently, and engaging comfortably in their fertility journey.
“My goal is to build a personal relationship with each of my patients,” Dr. Leung says. “I learn the small things about them, such as details about their work or family. I want them to feel comfortable asking me questions, because if you do not feel connected to your doctor or feel judged for asking, you will not ask about the things that matter to you, and that makes a difference.”
Drawn to the East Coast as a young woman, Dr. Leung moved from the Midwest to Princeton, New Jersey, for her undergraduate degree at Princeton University, where she studied ecology and evolutionary biology and minored in neuroscience. She then returned to Indiana for medical school, earning her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. There, she began narrowing her medical path. At first, the dexterous Dr. Leung—who plays piano and violin—thought she might specialize in surgery, but after experiencing OB/GYN, she was hooked.
“My OB/GYN rotation in medical school was the best experience,” Dr. Leung says. “I truly enjoyed the relationships I built with patients.”
After residency, Dr. Leung remained in the Boston area and completed her REI fellowship—three additional years of training focused on infertility—at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School and Boston IVF.
Dr. Leung is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and has conducted several studies in infertility. She used single-cell sequencing to compare sperm from fertile and infertile patients. She found that prior hormone therapy in transgender men did not affect the number of eggs retrieved during IVF , with egg counts comparable to those of cisgender women. She also studied how many eggs were needed in one IVF cycle to achieve multiple live births (more than 15). In addition, she investigated dozens of outcomes important to patients in translational research.
