Dr. Mike Mersol-Barg, United States
Dr. Mike Mersol-Barg is the medical and laboratory director of Michigan Reproductive Medicine. He is also an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and Wayne State University School of Medicine.
He has served as a high-complexity laboratory director for more than 25 years. Dr. Mersol-Barg is an inspector for the College of American Pathologists Reproductive Laboratory Accreditation Program, visiting IVF laboratories nationwide to evaluate and advise them.
Dr. Mersol-Barg was a 2015-2017 Clinical Research/Reproductive Scientist Training (CREST) scholar in a joint program of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), Duke University Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP), and American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). Only a small number of physicians nationwide are selected for this highly competitive program.
After graduating from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Mersol-Barg completed his obstetrics and gynecology internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He then completed his fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at The Ohio State University. He received the Berlex Research Foundation Faculty Development Award, which began his focus on evidence-based medicine. Dr. Mersol-Barg is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and the subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He practices at Beaumont Health-Royal Oak and Troy, Detroit Medical Center, and St. Joseph Mercy Oakland.
Dr. Mersol-Barg is an experienced and respected fertility physician and scientist with peer-reviewed publications and ongoing research in hormone treatment, IVF, egg freezing, and pelvic surgery.
He has presented research and scientific data at national and international meetings. He reviews for peer-reviewed journals including Fertility & Sterility and The Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, and currently serves on an editorial board.
Dr. Mersol-Barg has served as president of the Michigan Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility since 2002 and chairs the Michigan Oncofertility Consortium, which he founded in 2012 to educate physicians and patients about cancer and fertility preservation in Michigan. Michigan Reproductive Medicine is a nationally recognized Oncofertility Center of Excellence and a member of its national physician cooperative network.
Dr. Mersol-Barg is Michigan’s physician representative in the national SMART (States Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technology) Collaborative, which works with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to study health outcomes among mothers and infants following assisted reproductive technology such as IVF. Linking treatments with outcomes helps fertility physicians improve and optimize care for people who need treatment. Dr. Mersol-Barg is a co-author of published and ongoing SMART Collaborative research. In 2010, he was elected chair of the Michigan Fertility Advisory Committee, which works with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Mersol-Barg has been selected by his peers as one of Hour Magazine’s “Top Doctors” for many years, including the current 2024-25 award. Many physicians have also chosen him for their own medical care. An independent national organization has named him a “Super Doctor,” The Expert Network recently recognized him as a “Distinguished Doctor” among the top 3% of U.S. physicians, and U.S. News & World Report named him a “Top Doctor.”
Dr. Mersol-Barg is married to Mary Jo Mersol-Barg, and they have four children: Michael, Amy, Kevin, and Ryan. Ryan was born after Mary Jo experienced multiple miscarriages and brings them joy every day. Dr. Mersol-Barg hopes people experiencing the frustration and heartbreak of infertility can also know this joy. His own experience with secondary infertility and miscarriage has deepened his compassion for patients facing similar challenges.
