Dr. JAMES JOYCE, United States
Dr. Joyce was born and raised in Tempe, Arizona. His family later moved to a ranch in Idaho. While volunteering in an emergency room in Boise, Idaho, he found helping others deeply rewarding. While earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, a 54-day Rosary novena helped him discern that practicing medicine was God’s call for him to serve others. Dr. Joyce graduated from Creighton University School of Medicine. He began an obstetrics and gynecology residency at St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then transferred to a family medicine residency at Waukesha Family Practice in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Dr. Joyce began his career by opening a family medical center in Ivanhoe, Minnesota. He then practiced family medicine, including obstetrics, for 33 years in Springfield, Sleepy Eye, and Glenwood, Minnesota. He and his wife, Catherine, have nine children and seven grandchildren. Throughout his years as a family physician, his mission has remained the same: to humbly serve all people.
To support quality maternal and infant care in rural communities, Dr. Joyce became an Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics instructor through the American Academy of Family Physicians and spent many years educating obstetric care teams from rural community hospitals. He also helped two pregnancy resource centers in Mankato and New Ulm begin serving southern Minnesota.
Dr. Robin Goldsmith invited Dr. Joyce to join St. Gianna Clinic in April 2022 after they had worked together for many years in the Catholic Medical Association, which seeks to “inspire physicians to imitate Jesus Christ.” Through Dr. Joyce’s efforts, guilds were established in New Ulm and the Diocese of St. Cloud in Minnesota and the Diocese of Rapid City in South Dakota.
Dr. Joyce also serves by singing in the choir and acting as an altar server and lector. Dr. and Mrs. Joyce enjoy walking, tricycling, kayaking, canoeing, birdwatching, sailing, and camping together.
