Biography

Pasquale Patrizio, MD, MBE, HCLD, FACOG, an internationally renowned specialist in female and male reproductive medicine, is joining the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences and chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

“I look forward to leading our clinical, research and education programs in the spirit of trust, transparency and inclusion,” said Dr. Patrizio, whose discoveries have changed the way reproductive medicine and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are practiced throughout the world. He has spent the last 17 years at Yale University, directing the fertility center and IVF program at Yale School of Medicine.

“Dr. Patrizio has made major contributions to the field of reproductive medicine since the 1990s,” said Michael Paidas, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences. “We are excited to welcome him to the UHealth-Miller School family and look forward to advancing our program.”

Dr. Patrizio, who holds a master’s degree in bioethics (MBE), takes a collaborative approach to patient care and research. He plans to develop a Center for Reproductive Health with a service for transgender individuals, similar to his highly successful program at Yale. He also expects to create a fellowship program with Dr. Paidas for training future generations of reproductive medicine specialists.

“I will be working closely with the Miller School’s urologists, oncologists, pediatricians, geneticists and other specialists to provide personalized care to our patients,” said Dr. Patrizio.

Dr. Patrizio is one of the few U.S. fertility specialists to see both men and women. “Couples appreciate being seen by one doctor in a supportive environment, so both individuals can express their feelings, and discuss their options based on the same information,” he said. “Patients love this approach, which improves the coordination of care.”

Significant discoveries
In his 25-year career, Dr. Patrizio has produced research accomplishments of extraordinary importance and innovation spanning basic and clinical reproductive medicine. For instance, he discovered that the congenital absence of the vas deferens in men is a mild form of cystic fibrosis, and he found that some cases of male infertility are due to deletions on the Y-chromosome. This finding paved the way for genetic assessments as part of the clinical assessments for infertile men.

Dr. Patrizio also co-pioneered the microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA) technique to improve male fertility and developed whole ovary cryopreservation via multi-thermal gradient for fertility preservation in women. He also studied new methods for bio-banking gametes, reproductive tissue, and stem cells. In addition, Dr. Patrizio was co-author of the guidelines for fertility preservation in cancer on behalf of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Global recognition
These accomplishments have earned Dr. Patrizio global recognition as a clinical translational scientist and numerous honors and awards, including the induction as a life fellow member of the International Academy of Human Reproduction, a 36-members-only international group of experts and teachers of reproductive medicine.

Dr. Patrizio was also co-founder and former president of the International Society for Fertility Preservation (ISFP) and immediate past chair of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine’s Fertility Preservation Group.

He has published a leading assisted reproductive technologies (ART) textbook, five additional books, and 211 peer reviewed original manuscripts. He serves as an associate editor of Reproductive BioMedicine online and the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics.

Dr. Patrizio earned his medical degree followed by additional training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Napoli in Italy and completed a residency in andrology at the University of Pisa. He moved to the United States for a second residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California Irvine where he completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Dr. Patrizio was then appointed director of the male infertility program at the University of Pennsylvania, where he established a clinical and research program in male infertility.

I have never written a review, let alone a negative one. But after experiencing firsthand and fully understanding the difficult process people seeking infertility care endure, I decided to share my experience at this clinic. Honestly, I feel cheated. They transferred my only embryo on day 3, before it had developed into a blastocyst. I went home after the transfer in November 2024. To this day, no one has contacted me to ask what happened. I am leaving this message because I know how painful and expensive this treatment is for us. Congratulations to those who succeeded and had a good experience. I highly recommend fertility treatment at UHealth! I became pregnant on my first IVF attempt. I worked with Dr. Patrizio, who was very candid and knowledgeable. The nurses, ultrasound technicians, and staff were all wonderful and very attentive. The facility is also new and state-of-the-art.

I highly recommend UHealth Fertility! This clinic was excellent from the start. The entire process went smoothly, and I could not have asked for a better experience. Dr. Attia was very knowledgeable and ensured my partner and I understood everything throughout. The ultrasound technician was one of the kindest people I have met. She took time to explain in detail what we were seeing and the purpose of each test, making us feel very comfortable and reassured. Special thanks to receptionist Daniela, the heart of this clinic! From day one, her joy and enthusiasm made us feel welcomed and supported. Her engagement and passion show how much she loves her work, and that made our treatment journey special. I will not forget the phlebotomist either; her encouraging words and positive energy made every visit better! I will definitely return to this clinic. Its warm, supportive environment was exactly what I needed and prayed for. If you are seeking a fertility clinic that truly cares, UHealth Fertility is the place to go! 1000/10!

The doctor, several nurses, and one ultrasound technician were good. Everyone else at the clinic was unprofessional and extremely rude. It felt more like a factory and money-making operation than a clinic helping people through infertility. There was no compassion for patients.

Thanks to Dr. Attia’s exceptional care, I have such an adorable son! Thank God! After recurrent miscarriages, this clinic was a blessing for my husband and me. My only embryo survived! One was enough ♥️

Can't thank Dr. patrizio, Nasmi and the staff enough. Just graduated from my IVF process and have nothing but good things to say about them. Operations run smoothly, they were late once in 7 seven months with many appts in one month. Nurses work with you to find affordable medicine through local pharmacies. Lastly and most importantly, the subject matter expertise is palpable and they treat patients like families not just numbers. So fortunate to have found this team!! Thank you for helping me get pregnant :) huge fan of you guys

I was very disappointed with my experience at this clinic. I underwent two intrauterine inseminations (IUIs) and was encouraged to pursue a third without first receiving the necessary diagnostic testing, particularly a saline ultrasound to evaluate the uterine cavity. Because treatment was not progressing, I sought a second opinion at another clinic. There, I was diagnosed with two uterine polyps, which have now been removed. This is deeply concerning because the polyps may have directly affected the success of the treatments I received. It is troubling that such a basic, standard evaluation was not completed before fertility treatment began. This caused unnecessary procedures, emotional stress, and financial burden. I strongly encourage future patients to ensure all necessary diagnostic testing has been completed before receiving treatment at this clinic.

After two rounds of IVF elsewhere, my maternal-fetal medicine specialist referred me to Dr. Patrizio, and the difference was remarkable. He spent a full hour carefully reviewing my medical history and clearly and honestly explained the next treatment steps. He is highly knowledgeable and genuinely focused on outcomes, not merely the business of medicine. He has a good sense of humor and is candid, sincere, and highly professional. The clinic staff are also wonderful and very kind and considerate.

I’ve had a wonderful experience with this IVF clinic. The staff is consistently professional, attentive, and genuinely compassionate. They take the time to answer questions thoroughly and provide reassurance throughout every step of treatment. The level of care and emotional support they provide truly sets them apart. I highly recommend this team to anyone navigating fertility treatment.

I do not understand why this doctor has so many negative reviews. I understand that some patients are vulnerable, but in my case he offered treatment options other doctors had not, as well as blood tests I had never received elsewhere and that other doctors had refused to order. His treatment plan was good, he speaks English and Spanish, and he is kind!

I want to thank every member of Dr. Patrizio’s team for their professionalism and kindness in managing my case. Although it was not easy for me, I am glad my husband and I chose you for this process. Everyone, from the front desk staff to the doctors, was wonderful. I especially want to recognize nurse Nasmi, who did an exceptional job. She was kind and direct, guided me through every step, and helped me manage the normal anxiety of the process. The nurse who drew my blood each time was also outstanding. No matter the circumstances, she was always cheerful, and I deeply appreciate that.
