Dr. Erin Stevens, United States
Dr. Erin Stevens always knew she wanted to become a physician, but a personal experience led her to a career in obstetrics and gynecology.
After her grandmother died from complications of endometrial cancer, Dr. Stevens realized that her grandmother might have lived longer if she had sought help when symptoms first appeared. However, like many women, her grandmother was busy caring for others and did not want to burden or worry anyone by bringing it up.
"I realized how important it is to have someone you can comfortably confide in about sensitive issues without feeling judged."
As an obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Stevens values being a trusted confidante who provides the care and support people need to live full, happy, and healthy lives. From sexual health education and contraception to continuity of care and bringing new life into the world, Dr. Stevens truly loves every aspect of being an obstetrician-gynecologist. Her particular interests include contraception, fertility, PMDD, high-risk pregnancy management, and optimizing postpartum care.
Dr. Stevens also has a strong interest in legislation affecting women's health. She serves as legislative chair and a member of the advisory committee for the Minnesota Section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, contributing to legislative advocacy and education for patients and providers.
Dr. Stevens is also a recipient of the prestigious Gellhaus Resident Advocacy Fellowship and had the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., to learn about the policy and political factors shaping the future of obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. Stevens considers herself "a Minnesotan through and through." She was born in Faribault, grew up in Red Wing, and attended Carleton College in Northfield. She also worked for a year at Mayo Clinic in Rochester before entering the University of Minnesota Medical School. After completing her residency in Delaware, she was pleased to return home to work at Clinic Sofia.
Spending time with her husband and two toddler daughters brings her the greatest joy. She also enjoys reading, playing piano, riding her Peloton, attending concerts, trivia, and spending time in nature.
Dr. Stevens published a book in April 2020, Unexpected: A Postpartum Survival Guide, in which she candidly explains what happens to the body after childbirth, regardless of a person's gender identity, their own or their baby's birth outcome, or parenting status. "From vaginal stitches to your first postpartum bowel movement, Dr. Stevens guides you through physical warning signs, questions to ask healthcare professionals, and supplies for building your own at-home postpartum survival kit. With guidance on topics such as breastfeeding and formula feeding, exercise and sexual activity, and resources to support mental health and other needs, Unexpected reveals even the least-discussed aspects of the postpartum experience."
