Brad B. Swelstad, M.D., earned his medical degree from St. George's University and completed his OB/GYN residency at Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas. He then completed an REI fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Brad B. Swelstad, M.D., earned his medical degree from St. George's University and completed his OB/GYN residency at Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas, followed by an REI fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. During postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Swelstad received a Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) stem cell research grant for his work on germline stem cells in adult ovaries.

A former Howard Hughes Medical Scholar, Dr. Swelstad has received academic and clinical honors including Outstanding Resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Pacific Coast Reproductive Society research fellowship. He has served as medical director of a fertility clinic and as a university clinical instructor for OB/GYN residents.

Dr. Swelstad is a member of ASRM and ACOG and is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and REI.

His interests include fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, photography, soccer, tennis, skiing, running, and cooking. He also enjoys making nitro coffee and playing the didgeridoo, which he learned during clinical research in Australia.

Dr. Swelstad joined Shady Grove Fertility in November 2018 and sees patients at SGF's Fair Oaks, Virginia location.

Hello everyone! I do not usually write reviews, but I suddenly wanted to write one for Ariana E. I have piercings and tattoos, yet I am afraid of needles. I hate blood draws because they always hurt. Ariana E is incredibly gentle! My veins are small and often require several attempts, but Ariana always succeeds on the first try, without pain. Once she told me she was finished and I had not even realized she had inserted the needle. I never imagined I would be an SGF patient, but I am truly grateful you have her. She calms me and makes blood draws very easy. I usually develop large bruises on my arms, but that has never happened with Ariana. Ariana, thank you for taking such attentive care of your patients!

The staff at Shady Grove’s Fair Oaks clinic are wonderful! They are always compassionate and responsive. Although treatment was long and difficult, they always helped me find the right direction and answered every patient question. Thanks to them, I am now expecting our second miracle baby! I have been with Shady Grove for five years, and they have consistently been excellent. Science is always advancing, and I appreciate that they remain at the forefront of new research. Dr. Browne is kind and knowledgeable. The front-desk staff are very friendly as soon as you enter, which I especially appreciate because patients there may be uncomfortable. My veins are difficult, but phlebotomists like Hilary have never had a problem! My nurse Adrienne is extremely helpful and can clarify all my information and answer every question. I have held this in for four months and finally need to let it all out. The only reason we endured it for so long was that we desperately wanted a child and kept trying to remain positive. After four months of treatment, however, all we had was frustration, emotional stress, and a great deal of wasted money. We chose this clinic only because of my insurance. Apart from the kind receptionists and ultrasound nurses, our experience at the Fair Oaks clinic was deeply disappointing. Most staff treated us like a burden, as though we were asking for favors rather than paying patients seeking help. This is difficult to say, but it must be said: one of the two phlebotomists, the taller one, was extremely rude, and based on my observations, her behavior appeared highly discriminatory. I do not say that lightly. I noticed that she treated people very differently. She never returned my greetings or responded when I thanked her and always maintained a cold attitude that made us feel we owed her something. I used to greet her with a smile but eventually realized she did not want our kindness. Yet she gave several other people special attention and was always enthusiastic with them. Once, she even disrupted our appointment time, made us wait more than an hour, and caused us to miss an important meeting without offering a single apology. She simply blamed someone else and maintained the same attitude. People say she is kind only to certain patients—the ones she chooses for 'special treatment.' The female doctor was almost never present. She acted more like an inaccessible celebrity than someone genuinely providing care. She did not listen or help and made us feel completely ignored. My assigned nurse handled only basic administrative work. Whenever I asked a question, she dismissed or minimized it. Once, I asked a straightforward question by phone, and the nurse simply laughed and said she did not know, as though I had asked something foolish. This was extremely unprofessional—if you do not know, you should ask the doctor or find out. It felt as though no one truly cared about us. Even the financial coordinator could not track our payments, causing our treatment to be placed on hold. After a great deal of effort, they finally told us it was just a 'technical issue.' If something goes wrong at this clinic, you are essentially on your own. They appear professional on the surface, but we never felt any real support. This was our first fertility clinic. After everything—the hope, heartbreak, and disappointment—we lost trust in it. The experience took an emotional, financial, and mental toll and was one of the hardest periods of our lives. Even so, we will not give up. We will continue our journey at another fertility clinic. I wish everyone going through this process good luck—please choose your clinic carefully.

My experience at Shady Grove over the past few months has been excellent. Communication has been very smooth. Dr. Swelstad is wonderful and explained in detail everything we needed to know during our time at Shady Grove. Every woman at the front desk was warm and friendly :) I recommend Fairoaks 100%!

I just had my second child with help from the SGF Fair Oaks team, and both experiences were excellent. Infertility is difficult, but this team helped me stay very positive throughout IVF. When fertility treatment requires frequent appointments, friendly faces make a tremendous difference, especially on blood-test days—thank you to Hillary, who gets it right every time. If needed, I look forward to returning for a third child!

I just called to schedule my first consultation, and the phone representative, Bria/Brea, was not very pleasant. A previous representative gave me different information, leaving me confused about the process. Rather than helping clarify it, she made me feel foolish. I hope the doctors are gentler.

I sincerely thank Dr. Ganon and the medical team, especially my nurse Megan, for their guidance and support throughout my IVF cycle. Their professionalism and encouragement were invaluable. The staff at the Fair Oaks office, particularly the front desk, were always very helpful with scheduling and information, making this difficult journey smoother. If I could give this clinic zero stars, I would. TriCare no longer covers medical services at any Shady Grove clinic. I reported poor care to the patient care coordinator but received no response. To reach her, I had to interrupt her while she laughed on a phone video with two phlebotomists as I waited more than 45 minutes for a blood draw. Federal employees and military members—active duty, reserve, and veterans—no longer receive coverage, while Shady Grove’s fees have increased. Their doctors are cold, uncaring, and unresponsive. I was repeatedly called by other patients’ names, and my doctor misstated my medical history. He also complained that he had spent too much time with me—only 10 minutes after 5 failed cycles—because he was too busy. Their finance department openly violated HIPAA by refusing to provide medical records (PHI) until receiving advance out-of-pocket payment. Care was not individualized, and the care team did not adjust treatment based on current results. Moreover, my partner and I are federal employees. During the government shutdown, when we were unpaid, they denied us care and forced us to stop an IVF cycle already in progress. Please seek care elsewhere. This practice only cares about its bottom line. Its doctors have poor pregnancy outcomes because continuing to charge you when you do not reach your fertility goals is more profitable. They exploit patients, and the finance department often cancels cycles on Friday afternoons when weekend appointments are scheduled. Try these clinics: Columbia Fertility Associates, CCRM Associates, Dr. Rifka, Washington Fertility Center. Best wishes.

We had an amazing experience at Fair Oaks with Dr. Gannon! Thank you so much!!! After years of trying different methods without success, we had nearly lost hope. A friend suggested Shady Grove, and it worked on our first attempt! The team was very attentive and supportive. I am usually afraid of blood draws, but they adjusted the process so I would not faint, and everything went smoothly. The doctor and team explained the entire process in detail, answered all my questions, and continued to help throughout treatment. This made me feel very safe and reassured. I experienced some symptoms and felt overwhelmed, but the team was always there to answer my questions and provide guidance. Billing problems ruined an otherwise excellent care experience. I had a frozen embryo transfer (FET) in early August, and it still has not been billed correctly. I have repeatedly had to go back and forth between Shady Grove and my insurance company to learn the claim status. Shady Grove keeps telling me it is "under review" when it was actually denied two months ago, and they say they recently resubmitted the bill, though my insurer confirmed today that no new claim was filed. They had authorization for the procedure, so the claim should have been straightforward because the same codes were used. I feel passed between claims representatives, with no one taking ownership of the problem or treating it as important. I feel I must scrutinize every billing detail to ensure accuracy, which is extremely frustrating. I suspect the matter is less urgent to Shady Grove because if insurance does not pay, the patient will likely be responsible, which is very discouraging. I will update this review if the matter is resolved.

This clinic and Shady Grove as a whole are scammers. They use bait-and-switch marketing. We provided our insurance information before the appointment, and they told us the service was covered and quoted a price. When we arrived, however, they claimed a fertility exclusion meant the appointment was not covered, told us to self-pay, and charged a higher rate. I called my insurer, and no such exclusion existed; my plan actually covered fertility testing and all related services. I spent hours arguing with Shady Grove customer service before they finally submitted an insurance claim. They kept pushing us to self-pay rather than use insurance so they could charge more. The doctor was good, but they look for ways to keep insurance from covering services so they can collect more. Update: My insurance company approved the claim. This proves they lied in order to charge more.

She is not only approachable but deeply empathetic, with impeccable communication skills. I could feel how much she cares about her clients, and I was very fortunate to have her help with all my insurance and benefits matters so I could receive the services I needed as quickly as possible. The worst place! A complete scam! This is not a medical clinic but a predatory business model. After wasting more than $30,000 on multiple failed IVF cycles and overpriced medication, my advice is simple: run! This clinic operates like a profit-driven used-car dealership. They do not treat patients as patients; they exploit the desperation and grief driving you to empty your wallet. They profit specifically from your emotional pain and fear of infertility without showing any compassion. The truth behind the “care”: Manipulative sales: They exploit your desire for a family to sell expensive and unnecessary treatments. Questionable data: Do not trust their claimed success rates. Everything is carefully designed to keep the clinic's “business” profitable. Price gouging: Everything, from procedures to medication, is priced far above industry standards. The irony is that once we finally left this place and abandoned their “science,” a miracle happened—we conceived naturally. Do not let these people sell your hope back to you at a premium. Save your money, protect your sanity, and keep trying. Miracles do happen, but not because of the people in this building.

During our fertility journey, Dr. Gannon and her team created a safe, loving, and supportive environment. From knowing nothing at the beginning, through the most painful moments of our lives, to finally achieving pregnancy, they supported us warmly at every step. We had heard that many people hesitate about Shady Grove because they feel like just another number in the system, but our experience was completely different. We love our team and felt their encouragement every time we entered the clinic. I cannot imagine how we would have made it through this difficult journey without them.

The infertility journey is incredibly difficult and discouraging much of the time, but this clinic always greeted me with warm smiles at my early-morning appointments. They always remembered my name and treated me with great kindness. They consistently responded promptly to my questions through their website or by phone. I just “graduated” from the clinic yesterday, and I will always be grateful to everyone I met there. They were truly wonderful and helped us fulfill our dream of becoming mothers! Words cannot fully express our gratitude to Nurse Sara Conron, Dr. Alexandra Gannon, and Candace Vite. They played essential roles throughout our IVF treatment at Shady Grove Fertility Fair Oaks. These three talented, kind women reassure anxious prospective parents every day, and their patience and empathy often made us want to hug them, hold their hands, or cry with relief. They repeatedly went above and beyond to support us at every step of this complex journey. We can hardly imagine how difficult it is to navigate insurance, approvals, authorizations, verification, and countless other obstacles and institutions. My husband and I faced many setbacks and struggled with the process's complexity, but these three women helped us remain optimistic. We honestly could not have reached this point without their guidance and daily support. Their kindness is unmatched, and we are deeply grateful for the time, attentive care, and exceptional service they provided, far beyond anything we had experienced before. If you are considering IVF, choose the SGF Fair Oaks team without hesitation. Their expertise is outstanding. It is difficult to imagine a stage of life that could inspire more gratitude. Few decisions are more important than having a child, and their unconditional, continuous support was our lifeboat through rough seas.

We first visited the Leesburg clinic about three years ago and had a terrible experience; my review is on that clinic's page. A friend later recommended Dr. Brown in Fair Oaks. About six months later, I had my first egg retrieval with her, but all the eggs stopped developing after three days. We felt devastated and hopeless, as though we were back at the beginning. Dr. Brown was retiring at the end of the year, and there was not enough time for another retrieval before she left. She said another doctor would be assigned in the new year. We tried again at the beginning of the year with our third doctor. Honestly, we had little hope, but the outcome was unexpectedly good. Dr. Swelstad and his team, including nurse Emily ❤️, were exceptional from beginning to end. From preparing for the second retrieval through the ultrasound after our successful transfer, they did everything possible to help us. I highly recommend them. Thank you for everything!!!

This clinic does not deserve its 4.3 average rating. Here is why: 1. You will feel like just one of their many "patients." 2. Be aware that the doctor there is inexperienced and offers only two IVF protocols regardless of who you are. 3. After two failed IVF cycles, they will strongly recommend donor eggs. 4. You cannot even reach the on-call doctor when you have questions. Considering the enormous amount we all pay for IVF, I find this unreasonable. 5. New nurses lack supervision and sometimes give patients incorrect instructions.

SGF Fair Oaks turned my experience around. I had previously received care from a provider at the Leesburg office, and we were not a good fit. He went so far as to say, "What the hell are you doing?" regarding the more patient treatment plan my husband and I chose, which was fully covered by insurance and aligned with our personal beliefs. We were ready to leave SGF until I was connected with Julie Bobersky. She listened to me, our story, our hopes for the journey, and what we were and were not comfortable with. She personally selected Dr. Brad Swelstad for us at Fair Oaks, and it could not have been a better move. Dr. Swelstad was patient, compassionate, and sensitive to our goals and dreams for our family. He treated our preference for patience with care and offered support and statistics that helped us feel informed and empowered. 2 short months later, after a similarly simple, low-tech treatment plan that was fully covered, we learned that we were expecting. I share my story in the hope of encouraging others to hold fast to their beliefs and what feels comfortable. If you do not feel supported, hold your head high and advocate for yourself and your family. Not all providers are the same, and thankfully, this practice is large enough that you, too, can hopefully find the support and care you need. The Fair Oaks front desk, phlebotomy team, and NP ultrasound specialist were always kind, prompt, respectful, and smiling. The music in the waiting room is always on point!

Dr. Gannon and Emily A. were tremendously helpful throughout the entire process. Infertility treatment is a painful roller coaster, but I truly felt that they were always there for us. They celebrated our victories, endured the heartbreak of our setbacks with us, and listened to my thoughts and advocated for me when the treatment plan needed to change. We are so excited for the next chapter of our lives, and none of it would have been possible without the two of them and the Shady Grove Fertility team.

I highly recommend Dr. Alexandra Gannon and her team. We tried to conceive naturally for years without success and eventually decided to visit SGF to learn more about IVF. Although I had heard that some people disliked the clinic's size and felt it was like a "factory," our experience was nothing like that. From our initial consultation with Dr. Gannon through our final graduation visit, we never felt like just a "number." Dr. Gannon genuinely cares about her patients, and this was evident in every conversation and interaction. She is highly skilled, and she made our experience at SGF so positive. Our nurse coordinator, Sophie, was also outstanding—always warm, gentle, and patient. She answered every one of my many questions. Our nurse, Tiffany, was wonderful as well—always positive, kind, and friendly. Here, they remember your name, know your story, and show a level of care that I have never experienced from any other doctor or nurse. Our IVF transfer was successful, and we graduated from SGF. I miss this core team so much. They do excellent work, and I am sincerely grateful to them. I strongly recommend seeing Dr. Gannon if you can—she is the best.

I would especially like to give a shout-out to my nurse, Sophie, who truly made a difference in our experience. She was there for us every step of the journey. She patiently answered countless questions, listened to our concerns, and guided us through every stage of the process. Her kindness, responsiveness, and encouragement provided tremendous comfort during a challenging time. We had the opportunity to transfer to a Shady Grove Fertility location much closer to our home, but we chose to remain at Fair Oaks, mainly because of Sophie. We cannot say enough good things about Dr. Swelstad! He is highly knowledgeable and genuinely kind, with an excellent bedside manner. He supported us at every step and personally discussed results and next steps, even after the nurses had followed up. He sincerely cares about his patients, and we are so glad we chose him as our reproductive endocrinologist! I highly recommend Dr. Swelstad. Our miracle is now 6 months old and would not be here without him.

Dr. Swelstad is absolutely the best! We feel very fortunate to have found him. He is positive, kind, knowledgeable, and extremely patient. He always took time to ensure we fully understood what was happening and every new treatment or protocol he recommended. Whenever we needed to speak with him, he was available by phone or for a meeting. During something as difficult as fertility treatment, it is important to find a team that genuinely cares and supports you, and Dr. S and the SGF Fair Oaks staff are exactly that. We are now fortunate to have two beautiful SGF babies. Thank you, Dr. Swelstad!

Dr. Swelstad is a true gem and holds a special place in our hearts. I had one child and then could no longer become pregnant. After years of medical visits, I finally found Dr. Swelstad. After listening to our infertility concerns and thoroughly discussing and reviewing my history, he identified why I could not conceive. We proceeded with surgery, and he generously went above and beyond to address an old appendectomy scar and scar tissue. The surgery was exactly what I needed, and we were fortunate to have two more children. Ten years later, I wondered whether he was still blessing families with his knowledge and skill. I am delighted to see he has his own office. If you have found him, you are in the best hands!
