Ivy L. L. Lersten, M.D., is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) and reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). She earned her medical degree with research distinction from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She completed her OB/GYN residency at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, where she served as education chief resident, and remained there for her REI fellowship. 

Dr. Lersten received the ASRM Fertility Preservation Special Interest Group Prize Paper Award for her work in fertility preservation. The award-winning study, "Ovarian Response and Anti-Müllerian Hormone in Fertility Preservation Versus Elective Oocyte Cryopreservation Cycles," concluded that patients recently diagnosed with cancer could expect fertility preservation outcomes comparable to those undergoing elective egg freezing. Interested in ovarian biology, she expanded her expertise through fellowship research on optimizing ovarian tissue cryopreservation and presented the work internationally at the Society for the Study of Reproduction. 

Dr. Lersten is a member of ACOG, ASRM, and SREI.

    The organization and communication are terrible. I am an oncology patient, and my cancer treatment had to be delayed several times because the clinic failed to contact my insurer promptly.

    After my appointment, a representative called me, and I requested an appointment with a financial counselor to understand how to use my insurance and WIN benefits. She said she would escalate the request and notify the counselor. Two more people called about scheduling, obtaining my partner's information, and next steps. I explained that I was waiting for the financial assistance office to explain how WIN benefits worked. Only when a third person called and pressed me for information to begin treatment did he say I needed to schedule through the online portal. I was frustrated that no one told me earlier, but what truly upset me was that after the trauma of miscarriage, the office staff said, “Well, people usually figure out their finances beforehand.” I did not plan to endure a miscarriage or feel hopeless about the future. I sought help, but this place seems to value money, not people. You should care about helping others. I am sorry I had not already figured out something I had never experienced.

    I struggled to conceive naturally for three years. We had poor experiences at other clinics, then found Shady Grove online, and the reviews helped us greatly. Our experience there was excellent. They followed up after every appointment, answered every question and concern, and responded promptly. They truly cared about us.

    You are just a number here. No one seems to remember your treatment plan. Do not expect a return call within a week or a clear, understandable answer. This clinic has really declined since our last attempt to conceive.

    I spent $35,000 on one IVF cycle, and you cannot even provide a cup of coffee? Pathetic. Considering how much every patient pays, you should at least provide something basic.

    At 2:00 p.m. on August 18, 2025, the office manager was very rude to me. I had an insurance issue, and she completely disregarded my concerns. That morning, a claim had just been reapproved, showing that I no longer owed Shady Grove the outstanding balance on my account. I told them Anthem would pay within 48 hours, but the manager had the audacity to tell me that Anthem had given me incorrect information on its website and that, from her end, she could see Anthem had denied full payment for the service. She said, "Sometimes that happens. They put the wrong information on your account. I have been tracking the claim on my end, and it was reapproved just this morning, but you still owe money." This was strange because the billing department, two time zones ahead of me, looked at the same claim and said it was still being processed on their end...so was she lying? In any case, she said I would not be able to schedule future appointments at Shady Grove if I did not pay. The next day, the payment was removed from my account because the information in my Anthem account was indeed correct...It felt like I gave her the correct claim number, but she saw the wrong claim information and kept telling me I was wrong. All my anxiety was for nothing. This happened at the front desk during check-in.

    We love Shady Grove. Every staff member is very kind and helpful. Dr. Polotsky helped give us the opportunity to have two children, which would not have been possible without his expertise, patience, and attentiveness.

    I completed two egg-freezing cycles through the “Assured 20” program with the SGF/Dr. Polotsky team in Greenwood and had an excellent experience. Highly recommended.

    They would not even offer an in-person consultation. The woman on the phone was extremely rude and cold. After trying to conceive for three years, I finally saved enough for IVF or IUI, only to be told their age limit was 45 and they accepted only patients considering donor eggs. I had just turned 45. It was heartbreaking.

    Dr. Alex Polotsky, nurse Lauren, and the entire Shady Grove Fertility team helped us realize our dream of building a family. We struggled with infertility for four years, but Dr. Polotsky never gave up on us or our dream. He is thorough, approachable, and always listens carefully. This August, we welcomed our wonderful daughter with Shady Grove Fertility's help. If you are considering this clinic, I highly recommend it! They are excellent and will provide attentive care! :)

    This clinic's front desk and administration are a disaster. They scheduled an ultrasound despite my dye allergy, then called 20 minutes before the appointment to cancel it. Today I was supposed to have a genetic counseling consultation. I took the day off and paid the fee, but they never sent my genetic test results to the counselor. Front desk staff do not know what they are doing, understand no medical terminology, know none of the tests or procedures, and cannot even pronounce the names of basic imaging tests and procedures offered by the clinic. A disaster!

    Absolutely abysmal to their patients. My friend attends this clinic and we are both in healthcare and have been shocked and disturbed at how they treat their patients. There is little to no bedside manner and RNs refuse to interpret labs (saying they are just RNs when many RNs can interpret labs) or offer sympathy to patients. They recommended and then performed a procedure that ended up being unnecessary and after doing research was much more invasive than the other options available. The administrative side of this clinic is even worse. They send wrong or conflicting information regarding appointment dates and waivers and then are flippant about their mistakes and miscommunication. Find a different clinic unless you want little to no bedside manner or empathy from your healthcare team.

    Dr. Polotsky is the best fertility doctor I could have found. He is not only highly skilled and knowledgeable but also very optimistic and compassionate. During the two and a half years I was under his care, Dr. Polotsky often called me in the evenings and on weekends, sometimes with test results and more often to provide emotional support through the hardest journey of my life. He never gave up on me, and 10 days ago I delivered a perfect baby boy. He personally called to congratulate me and even attended the baby’s circumcision. IVF treatment is extremely difficult, but my doctor and the clinic staff—Casey and Zana!—gave me all the support I needed to succeed. Thank you so much!!

    I have never seen a clinic so disorganized or with such poor communication. That alone is frustrating enough, but their incompetence is even more outrageous: they forgot to bill my insurance company despite making the plan months in advance, leaving me to pay out of pocket because it was now too late. We sometimes waited for hours in the waiting room to see a doctor, only to find that no one appeared to have reviewed the insurance notes or understood the latest plan. I continue dealing with them only because I have no other choice. I can only assume they know that, or neither my friends nor I would ever return. If you can, I recommend going to any other clinic.

    If you are enrolled in Medicare, they will refuse to provide services even if you pay out of pocket. This is unbelievable... so if that is your situation, do not waste your time. The VA referred me, but SGF rejected my application because I am enrolled in Medicare. Aside from this nonsense, I have heard they are good in other respects.

    Dr. Polotsky helped us achieve success with IVF. Given our complex medical situation, he developed a very clear treatment plan in advance so we understood the timing and process. He helped us achieve what had seemed nearly impossible. We are extremely grateful to Dr. Polotsky and the entire care team.

    Kat R is truly wonderful. She is highly capable, makes me laugh when I need it, is considerate when I need support, and always looks out for me even before I realize I need it.     Do not go to this clinic. My partner was discharged immediately after egg retrieval while she was bleeding internally. Hours later, she nearly required removal of an ovary in the emergency room. The ER doctor told us the surgeon caused the internal bleeding and that this was the second patient from this clinic she had treated that week. My partner needed two blood transfusions. Dr. Alex Polotsky caused this. Do not see Dr. Polotsky under any circumstances. He was extremely irresponsible and should lose his medical license immediately. This clinic should be closed for malpractice.

    If IVF is your only goal, this clinic may be right for you. But if you are considering anything other than IVF, stay away. We repeatedly said we were not interested in IVF and only wanted fertility advice, but they would not listen and kept pushing IVF. Frankly, the doctor was rude. This was only my experience, and they may be good at IVF, but that was not why I came.

    They care about you only while you are paying them. How do I know? 1) Our experience. 2) Their reviews: they respond only to positive comments and ignore every one-star review. That shows their priorities. They care only whether you bring them business. If you happen to be unable to conceive, they immediately discard you. There is no follow-up, no next step, and no compassion for people whose lives have been changed. They threw us away like trash once we were no longer useful. It is unbelievable that they completely abandon patients this way. You must also have a ‘consultation’ before you can speak with them or enter the practice. At the consultation, they simply say they need your data. You pay $270 only to be told you need testing. They also use ‘divide and conquer.’ If a procedure requires a sample, they make you drive it over yourself even when many Shady Grove staff are already returning to Shady Grove. While you are still under anesthesia, they tell your partner bad news, then make the partner drive the sample alone. After your partner leaves, they wake you and tell you the same bad news. My partner and I each had to endure it alone. An absolutely terrible experience. Choose any other fertility clinic. This one cares only about money. Stay away!

    Good... and bad. Good for my wife, but a disaster for specimen collection/male fertility testing. The doors are heavy and loud, and every opening and closing can be heard clearly. The SGF andrology room or building restrooms often lack soap or paper towels. The white-noise machine is also frequently out of power.

    Dr. Polotsky, Monica, and their entire team are truly angels. During our time at SGF, we felt genuinely cared for and heard. They are not only knowledgeable and professional, but also empathetic and compassionate, which made an essential difference during our IVF treatment. You can truly feel how much this team cares. We transferred to SGF after an unpleasant experience at another clinic and are extremely satisfied with the care we received here. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Would you like to be overwhelmed by people who change your appointments without notice, expected to understand laboratories and testing better than anyone in the industry, forced to chase every scheduler and nurse repeatedly without getting answers, waste time, frustrate your employer, be made to use inadequate laboratories, waste money, and ultimately receive nothing—not even hope of pregnancy? Then you have come to the right place. I have been with Shady Grove for about a year, and I am ready to give up completely. No pregnancy, no communication, and no progress on my next treatment plan. All they say is “no.” I now understand why someone would scream hysterically here—they do nothing, yet they can drive you out of your mind. I sincerely wish you good luck.

    I really hate leaving negative feedback. However, this place is unfortunate a disaster in terms of non physician support. We were going through the pre ivf process and it so bad we switched practices. It was all but impossible to reach a nurse for questions by phone. Our nurse would not respond to messages for days. The final straw was not even getting a call to tell us the time of a procedure. I had to call the on call physician directly after the clinic assured us for days we'd receive a call the day before . We're still fighting to obtain our records for weeks now. We really liked our physician but at the end of the day, it takes s support staff too, especially for such an involved process as ivf. Our only regret was not switching sooner.

    I have very good experienced with Shady Groove Fertility in Denver. Having fertility problem is not an easy problem to deal with but Doctor Alex Polotsky and the nursing team and the financial advisor department and the front desk team make my journal much easier . Dr Alex polotsky always there for me for every step of the journey , he call me when I have 4 successful embryos that have good PGTA result , he called me when after my 1st Beta number , he requested to do the surgery for me when I I have cysts after my eggs retrieval , he was there and celebrate when I have my first ultrasound with good heart beat. He always so supportive and cheer me up. The nursing team is also amazing , they always response to my email right away and always called me with every blood work result and willing to send my eggs retrieval medications to different specialty pharmacy so I can get the best price. The financial department is phenomenal, they always email me to make sure that everything is good and clear before my transfer and make sure all the paper work are sign in appropriate timely manner. The front desk team are so nice and sweet. They even remember my name and always Able to schedule me in when I needed it. I can’t asked for a better team . I highly recommend Shady Grove Fertility in Denver for anyone who going through fertility journey. The Denver team make the process and journey a lot less stress and smooth for me . I am very grateful and appreciate everything they did for me. I be graduate from the clinic in 2 days and I’m feel so emotional. I happy to finally get pregnant but I will miss dr Polotsky team . I know fertility journey can be very stressful and a lot of anxiety but with dr Polesky team in Denver location , the journey will be alot smoother and you will eventually have a family of your dream.

Her kindness and encouragement made difficult times easier, and I always felt well cared for.     I highly recommend Dr. Lersten and the Shady Grove clinic for fertility care. From my first consultation, Dr. Lersten and her team were professional, empathetic, and genuinely caring. Dr. Lersten was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining the egg freezing procedure in detail and ensuring I felt fully informed. The nursing staff and MAs were also wonderful – kind, attentive, and always available to provide support. The clinic itself is clean, modern, and calming. What truly stood out was the personalized care. I never felt like just another patient; the team remembered my name and concerns. Communication was excellent, with clear instructions and prompt responses. The egg retrieval was smooth, and recovery was easier than anticipated.     Shady Grove provided excellent care throughout IVF. We underwent diagnostic testing with Dr. Lersten in 2024 and began our IVF journey in 2025. She is the best doctor I have met, and her expertise throughout the process helped us finally become pregnant. All the nurses, phlebotomists, and other staff were excellent. Caitlyn was my nurse and always responded promptly to portal messages, ensuring all my questions were answered. They always scheduled appointments when needed, and I never waited long. I have recommended Shady Grove and Dr. Lersten to another friend considering IVF. Although IVF and infertility are never easy, Dr. Lersten and the rest of the staff made the process smooth and successful. We will always be grateful.

    I started looking at freezing my eggs through Shady Grove and have had an extremely disappointing experience. I’ve had multiple contact points, each who have told me different things about the requirements, processes, and timelines. After initially planning vacation and work around what I understood the timeline would be, I learned that that was not the case. Then I decided to suck it up and replan things for a future cycle, based on new info from my consultation. I then received multiple confusing emails where I’ve since requested callbacks 3 times (via email 2x and via phone 1x) and have still not heard back over 1 week later. Do not go here if you want any care for a sensitive topic and procedure.

    My husband and I were extremely impressed with Shady Grove. We started in March and graduated in October. Everyone we met at the different locations was very kind and considerate. They made sure all our questions were answered and that we felt supported in every way. We are so glad we chose Shady Grove!

    We had an excellent experience with Dr. Lersten and her team at Shady Grove. Dr. Lersten was outstanding: candid at every step and patient and thorough in explaining every detail. During such an emotional and stressful journey, her clarity and honesty gave us tremendous confidence and reassurance. Her nurse Caitlyn was equally wonderful. She always responded promptly, communicated clearly, and kept us informed. Every question was answered quickly, and we felt supported and cared for throughout.     The staff at SGF are very kind. Dr. Levenson is wonderful—compassionate, thorough, and patient in answering all our questions. The phlebotomists were also warm and friendly, helping me relax during blood draws, which were nearly painless.

    My experience was extremely poor from the beginning. When I called to schedule an appointment, the receptionist was rude and asked why I needed to be seen. This felt inappropriate and unnecessary because she did not understand my medical situation. During my appointment with Dr. Ivey, she dismissed my medical history and concerns about endometriosis. Despite my symptoms, relevant history, and ongoing treatment, she minimized them by saying, “It’s not that serious” and “You’ll be fine, right?” It felt as though my pain was being ignored. I was in tears and felt dismissed and frustrated. As a patient seeking treatment and guidance, I did not feel heard, supported, or taken seriously. This experience was deeply upsetting and affected my trust in the clinic’s care. Patients deserve respect, empathy, and professionalism at every stage of their visit.

    I am deeply grateful to Dr. Levenson for her attentive care throughout my IUI journey. From my first visit, she showed tremendous compassion, attention to detail, and unwavering support. She patiently explained every step, answered every question, and made sure I felt reassured and confident throughout the process. Fertility treatment can be overwhelming, but Dr. Levenson’s calm reassurance and genuine empathy made it much easier. What touched me most was her sincerity—she even asked me to share photos after the baby is born, showing how deeply she cares about her patients and their outcomes.
