Dr. Melanie Landay, United States
For Melanie Landay, becoming a fertility physician is less a job than a calling. From an early age, circumstances seemed to draw her toward this path.
First, Dr. Landay’s father was a physician, and their close relationship sparked her early interest in medicine. Second, she loved science and helping others and envisioned a career that combined both. Third, in her 20s, she began seeing one person in her life frequently—her gynecologist. After undergoing surgery twice for ovarian cysts, she became familiar with the complexity of the female reproductive system and developed a deep respect for its mechanisms—and for the women who navigate them.
The Pittsburgh native attended medical school at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Knowing she wanted to pursue women’s health, she remained there for her obstetrics and gynecology residency.
During the final year of her residency, as other residents selected subspecialties, women around her were busy building families. One of Dr. Landay’s close childhood friends was having difficulty starting a family. Diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), her friend chose in vitro fertilization (IVF) and often turned to Dr. Landay for guidance and support.
In that moment, she knew she would specialize in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). By the time she completed her fellowship at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2010, she was ready to follow the path she had long envisioned—even while balancing work as a recent postpartum mother of two children under age two.
“It was difficult to leave them so soon,” Dr. Landay says, “but knowing I was returning to work to help others have families was one of the most uplifting feelings in the world.”
“I am deeply grateful that I chose this career, and I am honored to help so many remarkable people pursue their goals of having a family.”
