Dr. Thomas Kim is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist, a high-complexity clinical laboratory director in embryology, and a certified medical technologist.
Dr. Kim initially planned to become an internist until his own experience with infertility changed his career path. After two years of treatment, Dr. Kim and his wife achieved their goal of becoming parents.
“It was an enlightening experience that sparked my interest in reproductive medicine and its related technologies,” he says. “I therefore decided to change my career path and become a reproductive endocrinologist.”
After fellowship training at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Kim launched the first military IVF program on the West Coast. Since its launch in 1998, the program has helped thousands of active-duty service members pursue parenthood. After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 2001, Dr. Kim partnered with CHA Medical Group to establish an IVF clinic in Los Angeles and pursue his interest in egg freezing as a fertility preservation option for women. He and his colleagues published a landmark paper on egg freezing, which was considered experimental at the time.
His research on innovative vitrification methods for human eggs attracted national interest and was covered by major media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, Time, People Magazine, and The Boston Globe. Today, egg cryopreservation using vitrification is a widely accepted treatment option, particularly for patients newly diagnosed with cancer.
Dr. Kim believes modern fertility treatment is very different from a decade ago.
“This is a field where advanced technology meets frontline medical practice. As laboratory technology advances rapidly, particularly in molecular genomics, clinicians must remain current and help patients navigate complex medical information,” Dr. Kim says.
“I believe my experience as both a patient and a clinician helps me connect more effectively with patients,” he adds. “I am committed and honored to accompany them on their journey to build a family.”
