Dr. Karen Purcell, MD, PhD is a board-certified physician and is the founder and director of CARE for the Bay Area.  Dr. Purcell graduated from Yale medical school and completed her fellowship training at the University of California, San Francisco.  She has over sixteen years of medical experience with a focus on fertility and endocrinology.  Her professional experience includes leading several medical research projects on complementary medicine and fertility, earning her award-winning recognition.

    I was denied care here because the office lacks suitable equipment for people of different body sizes. After months of misleading information, I was told I could not be treated because their operating table has a 250-pound weight limit. This is medical discrimination at the highest level, and I will pursue legal action.

    Dr. Purcell and the CARE team were kind and responsive. During an emotional and difficult season, they gave us hope that we would have a baby at the end of the process. We ultimately obtained one healthy embryo, who is now our young son. However, it took 3 IUI and 4 IVF cycles and a great deal of heartbreak, not to mention thousands of dollars per cycle. After speaking with two other fertility doctors and completing another cycle at a different office, I learned that Dr. Purcell used an ‘old-school’ approach that unnecessarily prolonged our journey. We might have obtained more embryos with a different medication protocol and ICSI for all fertilization. Dr. Purcell is also the clinic's only doctor, which can provide more personal care. Our new fertility office has several doctors, however. In hindsight, that is preferable for a complex case because the doctors can exchange ideas and develop the best plan instead of relying on only one opinion.

    Dr. Purcell, the nurses, and the staff are all very kind, compassionate, and professional. I am glad we chose this clinic for our IVF journey.

    Her team was and remains absolutely exceptional. About 5 years into our fertility journey, after seeing different doctors, we began with CARE. Dr. Purcell focused on understanding my body and was the first physician to help us truly understand and take the step toward IVF. She was also the only one who helped us become pregnant. It took time to have our miracle baby, but we welcomed her in 2019! Everyone—administration, back office and behind-the-scenes staff, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other physicians—was outstanding and always made us feel supported and heard. We were very fortunate to work with the CARE team and will always be grateful to them!
