Dr. Joshua Berger, United States
Joshua J. Berger, MD, is a dual board-certified fertility specialist who balances his passion for research with a commitment to patient care. Our Manhattan Beach fertility doctor works with patients to address complex causes of infertility and help them become parents.
The National Institutes of Health, Duke University, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) awarded him a Clinical Research/Reproductive Scientist Training (CREST) fellowship in recognition of his skills as a clinician and scientist. His work has been recognized by peers at the ASRM annual meeting.
Dr. Berger has a longstanding interest in research
After completing his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Berger returned to Manhattan Beach. There, he began investigating the underlying causes of insulin resistance syndrome by studying the molecular relationships among diet, obesity, and exercise.
While earning master's and doctoral degrees in physiological sciences at UCLA, Joshua J. Berger, MD, received wide recognition for his teaching and his work on the growing obesity epidemic.
Our Manhattan Beach fertility doctor pursued his PhD and MD at UCLA concurrently. During his fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he continued his research under world leaders in their fields. There, he studied the relationship between obesity and muscle fibers as a possible underlying cause of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). His work was again presented to peers at the ASRM annual meeting.
Today, he remains active in reproductive research through publications. He is also a recognized reviewer for scientific journals, including Fertility and Sterility and The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Our Manhattan Beach fertility doctor has an impressive medical background
Dr. Berger attended medical school at UCLA, then completed his OB/GYN residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. His teaching, compassionate patient care, and professionalism impressed medical students and fellow residents, leading to his nomination for and receipt of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award for Humanism and Excellence in Teaching.
He returned home to Manhattan Beach and joined Kaiser Permanente as a general obstetrician-gynecologist, delivering nearly 1,000 babies in the South Bay. As a Kaiser Permanente partner, Dr. Berger served on the Culturally Responsive Care Committee and Pap Smear Advisory Group. He also helped lead implementation of the OB/GYN department's electronic medical record.
Joshua J. Berger, MD, also pioneered OB/GYN involvement in the bariatric core committee by advocating women's health evaluations before bariatric surgery. The distinctive fertility and health concerns of these patients require special attention because rapid weight changes can significantly affect women's reproductive health and potential.
During fellowship, his focus on patient safety led to appointment to the Quality Review Committee, while his interest in medical informatics led to appointment to the IMPACT Physician Advisory Group.
Joshua J. Berger, MD, is an internationally recognized physician
With more than 20 years of surgical experience, Dr. Berger has received numerous peer honors and is often sought for difficult reproductive surgery cases. He completed fellowship training in advanced hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques, especially those that preserve uterine, tubal, and ovarian function. A strong advocate for reproductive equity, he cares for the LGBTQ+ community and for women, men, and nonbinary people seeking fertility preservation.
Dr. Berger lives in Manhattan Beach with his wife and four children. They enjoy day trips to Disneyland, building sandcastles at Redondo Beach, and creating Lego structures. An avid music lover and amateur audiophile, he also enjoys collecting and rebuilding audio equipment, although he has little time for it now.
