As medical and laboratory director of the Columbia University Fertility Center, Eric Forman, MD, HCLD, oversees the medical practice and the IVF embryology and andrology laboratories. He also actively cares for patients with infertility and those seeking fertility preservation. Dr. Forman has extensive clinical and laboratory research experience. He has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals on a wide range of assisted reproductive technology (ART) topics and serves as an associate editor of Fertility and Sterility.
He has a special interest in using preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) to optimize IVF and improve selection for elective single-embryo transfer (eSET). A randomized controlled trial he led was the first to show that transferring one chromosomally normal embryo can achieve the same live birth rate as transferring two untested embryos. After the paper was published, eSET rates rose sharply, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine cited Dr. Forman's research in its guidelines on the number of embryos to transfer in IVF. He is also interested in fertility preservation. A study he led showed that freezing eggs with rapid vitrification does not increase the risk of genetic abnormalities in resulting embryos. One of the world's leading cryopreservation experts called the research a “watershed in ART.”
Dr. Forman specializes in personalized patient care that addresses each couple's unique challenges. He is active on social media and frequently blogs and comments on important topics in reproductive medicine and the patient/physician experience. Follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Outside work, Dr. Forman enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, and four cats; running, including completing the 2016 New York City Marathon with Team Every Mother Counts; and supporting his favorite sports teams: the Mets, Jets, Knicks, Rangers, and Duke Blue Devils.
