Biography
Dr. Gianpiero D. Palermo is Professor of Embryology in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Blavatnik Family Professor of Reproductive Medicine at the Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He earned a B.Sc. from Lyceum “Vincenzo Lilla” in Francavilla Fontana, Italy; a medical degree from the University of Bari in Bari, Italy; and a doctorate in reproduction and development from Monash University in Clayton, Victoria, Australia. He completed an obstetrics and gynecology residency and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. Since 1993, he has also served as Director of Assisted Fertilization and Andrology at the Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Dr. Palermo first described intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in 1992 as a solution for complete and unexpected fertilization failure in IVF and male-factor infertility. It has since become the world’s most widely used assisted reproductive technology.
Dr. Palermo lectures nationally and internationally and has written or coauthored more than 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts, over 30 book chapters, several textbooks, and more than 440 abstracts presented at conferences worldwide. He also reviews for several high-impact journals, including The Lancet, Nature, Fertility and Sterility, Reproductive BioMedicine Online, and the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, where he has also served as an editor.
Dr. Palermo specializes in the evaluation and treatment of male infertility, including complex nontraditional sperm preparation techniques and correction of fertilization failure.
