Clinical Interests

Clinical Interests

As a pioneer in reproductive immunology, Dr. Kwak-Kim has devoted more than 25 years of her career to reproductive immunology research and continues this work. Her research focuses on understanding the immune system’s role in pregnancy and pregnancy loss and developing treatment plans to help women maintain successful pregnancies.

What is reproductive medicine and immunology?

Reproductive medicine and immunology helps patients who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss, unexplained infertility, repeated failed in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer, unexplained second- or third-trimester pregnancy loss, or pregnancy with a history of or active autoimmune and/or alloimmune disease. Dr. Kwak-Kim and her team of nurse practitioners, registered nurses, medical assistants, and sonographers work with patients to identify causes of pregnancy loss and help them achieve a successful pregnancy.

Reproductive Medicine and Immunology was established at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in 1987. For 25 years, the program has provided evaluation and treatment to patients from across the country and around the world.

While patients are trying to conceive, Dr. Kwak-Kim and her staff coordinate care with a reproductive endocrinologist or primary gynecologist. After pregnancy is achieved, care continues in coordination with an obstetrician or maternal-fetal medicine specialist.

Specialty: Reproductive Medicine and Immunology

Services: Recurrent pregnancy loss, recurrent implantation failure, unexplained infertility, poor ovarian response, premature ovarian failure, and care for women with rheumatic, alloimmune, and autoimmune diseases.

These low ratings seem crazy to me because I went to this clinic for my foot, and Dr. Dookie took excellent care of me! She first had two students meet with me. They took all these measurements and asked many questions about what was wrong, then discussed it with the doctor. All three came in to speak with me, and I felt heard, respected, and cared for! My experience was amazing! Everyone was extremely kind and attentive! I was simply amazed!

These people never answer the phone or return calls. Unprofessional.

I called to schedule with a doctor who was about to retire, and the process took several weeks. That was fine, but I left multiple messages saying I had found another convenient doctor. When I finally received a return call from RFU, the woman became very angry when I told her I would not use their services. She berated me for being rude, said I had not notified them, and hung up.

Complete disregard for common sense. Very little effort to understand the facts. Licensed to practice medicine. I would give zero stars if I could. Choose carefully.

I really like my therapist, Dr. Matyja, but the front desk is among the rudest and most incompetent staff I have encountered. They never answer calls or return voicemails and are extremely rude. My appointment today was supposed to be at 9:30 a.m., as the front desk told me when scheduling, but I received no reminder or confirmation by email or text. When I logged into the portal, it showed 9:00 instead. Confused, I immediately called the front desk and had to call 10 times before anyone answered. They were very rude, said arriving on time was my responsibility, and that my missed appointment was not their problem. Even after I explained the communication error and tried to understand what went wrong, they said they had too many patients and were not responsible for telling patients their appointment times. I am very disappointed because I like my therapist, but now I may leave.

I had an extremely poor experience trying to schedule care at the Rosalind Franklin University Health Clinic on Green Bay Road in North Chicago. After TRICARE approved my dependent's referral to a psychiatrist, I called to begin new-patient registration. I navigated a lengthy automated menu and, after selecting the new-patient option, was finally asked why I was calling. When I explained that I was calling for my dependent, who has autism spectrum disorder, cannot read, and has an intellectual disability, the staff member was cold, rushed, and unhelpful. I explained that I was in Okinawa, Japan, and asked whether registration forms could be emailed so I could assist. I was repeatedly refused and told to use the clinic website. The clinic requires portal access to complete forms, but only established patients can access the portal. This creates an unreasonable barrier for new patients, especially those with disabilities. No accommodation or alternative was offered. When I expressed frustration, the representative apologized without empathy. After I pointed this out, she abruptly hung up. From the automated system to the staff interaction, the process was unacceptable, rigid, and uncaring. This is especially troubling for a medical institution serving vulnerable patients.

I had a terrible experience today, made even worse by the nurse's follow-up. I was completely unprepared for the biopsy. I only took ibuprofen because I looked it up online. The doctor then told me there was a risk of uterine perforation and would not let me read the form I was being asked to sign while I was undressed. I trusted the doctors, and they were considerate during the procedure, but I do not think they knew what they were doing. Their conversation during the procedure was also very unhelpful. They said they could not see clearly and were having trouble, and only asked about my medical history while I was in severe pain and lying with my head lowered, rather than reviewing it beforehand. The ultrasound technician also quietly told the doctor that he was looking in the wrong place. Afterward, the second doctor made me feel as though they had injured me, then left me sobbing in a waiting room that offered no privacy. I was deeply traumatized. The nurse actually blamed me for not asking enough questions, as if I should have known how the procedure worked and what to ask. Unbelievable.

After 10 failed attempts, I was referred to Dr. Kwan-Kim. She was the only person to diagnose my endometriosis. I also had clotting problems and elevated NK cells. She was extremely helpful. I went from having no explanation to having answers. The staff and nurses were also wonderful!

Before seeing Dr. Kwak Kim, I had approximately 12 miscarriages. Thanks to her and her staff, I was able to have two rainbow babies! Margaret was wonderful to work with.
