Dr. Sujatha Gunnala, United States
Dr. Sujatha Gunnala is a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist providing fertility care to couples experiencing infertility.
Dr. Gunnala founded Southwest Fertility Center in 1980 after postgraduate training at two leading U.S. centers in obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. She attended the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. She graduated from medical school with honors, received the gold medal in internal medicine, and achieved the highest score in her graduating class. She also ranked second among more than 300 Osmania University graduates across all clinical subjects: internal medicine, general surgery, OB/GYN, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology.
Among her many achievements, Dr. Gunnala remains a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is an active member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), Society of Reproductive Surgeons, and Society of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons.
Working with the center's clinical staff, Dr. Gunnala has advanced the science and practice of reproductive endocrinology and infertility through research, seminars, pioneering treatments, and clinical trials. She frequently serves as a lecturer, consultant, and adjunct faculty member at Midwestern University in Phoenix; clinical assistant professor of OB/GYN at St. Joseph's Medical Center/Dignity Health; and clinical assistant professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine–Phoenix.
Dr. Gunnala is a skilled reproductive surgeon with expertise in advanced laser laparoscopy and hysteroscopic surgery. Known by surgical staff as the “Laser Queen,” she has helped many women with infertility related to endometriosis, uterine fibroids, tubal disease, and uterine abnormalities.
A pioneer in her field, Dr. Gunnala launched the IVF program at Southwest Fertility Center in the late 1980s. She has witnessed major advances since the first IVF birth in 1978 and is proud of the center's skilled, dedicated team, which continues to offer personalized care and advanced technology while maintaining strong pregnancy success rates.
Dr. Gunnala has devoted her life to caring for couples experiencing infertility and helping women pursue motherhood. Her own experience helps her understand the emotions and stress involved. She says, “The pain of infertility is close to the heart, and no one can take that pain away.”
Dr. Gunnala has been married to her husband, Suri, for more than 45 years. Their two sons followed her into medicine, and she is the proud grandmother of 4 grandchildren.
In her free time, she enjoys family and friends, especially her grandchildren, whom she considers treasures and gifts to grandparents.
A generous donor, she is a former president and volunteer of the Maha Ganapati Temple of Arizona and currently serves on its advisory committee. She and Suri are lifetime members of the Indo-American Cultural and Religious Foundation (IACRF), India Association of Phoenix (IAPHX), and Arizona Telugu Association (AZTA). They have also supported several nonprofit charities in Silicon Valley.
