I took my daughter to the ER, where she was examined and had an X-ray. I told the nurses and doctor that she also has asthma. The doctor diagnosed her with RSV, said she saw something on the X-ray, and sent us home with instructions to continue regular over-the-counter medication. She did not improve. Anyone knows that a cold, flu, or similar illness can become worse in someone with asthma or another health condition. We went home for the holidays, and she was seen there. They had to prescribe medication for my daughter and asked why the ER had not done so, since it could have prevented her condition from worsening. The ER doctor spoke quickly and did not seem concerned. This really upset me.

This is the hospital where I was born. I am grateful to my mother for giving birth to me while she was in the military, and I am grateful to the doctors who truly helped me as a newborn in 2004.

The maternity and postpartum departments are the best anyone could ask for. Even during such a complicated delivery, my wife and baby were well cared for, which relieved a great deal of stress. Thank you for everything you did!

I took my 6-month-old to the ER because of a severe cough and mild fever. A doctor saw us immediately, evaluated him, and gave me helpful information about what to watch for next. I left feeling very reassured about my baby's health.

Customer service, the ticketing process, and wait times are terrible. Despite the many customer service windows, it is common to wait 2, 3, or even 4 hours after discharge to receive medication. This may be one of the worst military treatment facility pharmacies I have used—surprising because it also serves the Navy's largest fleet concentration area. The screen may show a 120-minute wait, but it can take 3-4 hours to see a clerk.

I have had the unique perspective of experiencing Naval Medical Center Portsmouth not only as a long-time patient, but also as someone who has undergone surgery here—twice. Over the years, this facility has consistently provided outstanding care at every level, and I cannot speak highly enough of the professionalism, dedication, and compassion shown by the staff. Even though my Primary Care Manager (PCM) has changed every two to three years, the quality of care has remained consistently excellent. Each provider I’ve worked with has taken the time to listen, explain treatment options clearly, and ensure I felt confident in the plan forward. The transitions between PCMs have been seamless, which speaks volumes about the center’s systems, communication practices, and the overall culture of care. During both of my surgeries, I was impressed not only by the medical expertise of the surgical teams but also by the warmth and attentiveness of the nursing staff and support personnel. They made what could have been stressful, even frightening, experiences feel safe and manageable. Every step of the process—from pre-op consultation to recovery—was handled with professionalism and humanity. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth remains my trusted source for care. It is a facility that truly lives its mission, and I am deeply grateful for the high standards they uphold. They have not only treated my medical needs—they’ve earned my long-term confidence and appreciation.

Incompetent. I waited two hours, from 9:48 a.m. to 11:48 a.m. I went to the front desk and was told it would be another hour. What a joke. Thank you for not getting my medication and wasting my time. This place is a joke, as is the staff.

Without question, this was the best treatment I have ever received. The physicians, nurses, and staff were all very caring. I came from the emergency room, underwent emergency surgery, and was hospitalized for one week. I am very happy. 👏👏👏👏

After ten years in Virginia, this hospital pharmacy still makes patients wait four hours for prescriptions. You are told to take medication at a specific time but receive it hours late, and a system update has extended the delay. I am currently waiting for my son's medicine. Ten years with almost no improvement.

I love my delivery doctor, Dr. Christopher Desposito! He was wonderful, explained everything, and made me comfortable, and the delivery team was excellent. However, my postpartum care was terrible. Two nurses were cruel, rude, and rough with me when I was vulnerable after giving birth, though some other nurses were kind and caring. I also previously visited after an ectopic pregnancy; the first male nurse told me I had miscarried and sent me home without further tests. They called only after I sought a second opinion elsewhere. It was frightening that they dismissed me and said I was not pregnant. I needed repeated follow-ups until my levels returned to normal. I am deeply grateful to the final doctor I saw, who later delivered my son. Thank you, Chris, for listening, understanding, and caring for my son and me. My husband and I appreciate you, and the young colleague with you was also excellent and a great role model.

I arrived at 10 a.m. and waited nearly 3 hours in the ER. It is now 2:30 p.m., and I have waited almost two more hours at the pharmacy for eye drops. I appreciate the doctor's care, but this hospital is terrible and I do not want to return. Virginia has the worst hospitals and healthcare staff.

I would give zero stars if possible. I had major surgery here, and the surgeon did not investigate the cause. He simply cut me open at age 20 and disappeared. Their medical staff knew almost nothing about my condition, did not know how to control pain—I screamed for hours immediately after surgery—and did not know how to communicate with patients. Once they realized the surgery had failed, the surgeon essentially fled. This is the worst hospital I have seen. Unless I am dying, I will never have surgery here again. They do not know what they are doing. I have visited this emergency department for years. Many people there are training to place IVs, and they miss at least twice every time I go. I understand they need to learn, but unlike other facilities in the area, they have no IV specialist team for patients with fragile veins or connective tissue disorders. The emergency department can sometimes help, but waits are extremely long. Follow-up years later: I had the correct surgery at Riverside Hospital. Nmcp just tried to redirect my neurosurgery referral to their own hospital instead of Riverside—absolutely not! Avoid this problem now.

My husband and I do not know how to express our gratitude to everyone who cared for us during delivery. They cared for me like family and close friends, never judging, pressuring, or questioning me. Childbirth is a remarkable experience, and although it does not always go as planned, the support around you truly changes your emotional and mental strength. Many people cared for me, but Brian and Courtney spent the most time with me during the two days of labor, and I truly will never forget them. They went from complete strangers to helping my husband and me bring our baby girl safely into the world while ensuring my physical and emotional well-being for hours. There are so many people to thank. I hope other women will look beyond negative reviews of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and experience giving birth to life's greatest gift while supported by people who genuinely do their jobs with love, kindness, and dedication. We will never forget the birth of our first child, and we will never forget you! We were also fortunate to see one of the obstetric providers who cared for me during pregnancy at Sewells Point. Ms. Sherlin stopped by during labor to say hello, and seeing a familiar face was so thoughtful. She later returned to help when a minor complication arose. She and Ms. Kinsada were both wonderful at Sewells Point. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for giving us the sweetest, most memorable experience.

I walked around the base twice carrying a large bag, and no one checked my identification. Many people were walking around in uniform wearing headphones.

Not everything at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth was perfect, but now that my husband has retired and we receive civilian healthcare, we miss Portsmouth greatly. By comparison, the care, convenience, and support there were truly unmatched. Looking back, we appreciate it far more than we realized at the time. The pediatric specialists, especially in allergy and gastroenterology, were excellent!

My first OB-GYN experience here was terrible. The previous woman asked why this was my first child if it was my second pregnancy. I had taken so many vitamins and other things, but none helped. Today's experience was even worse. I needed help for pelvic pain that has still not improved. They told me to see my obstetrician, but my obstetrician sent me there. Now I am stuck with severe pain that is difficult to relieve and getting worse, yet no one will help. I know this is not right, and the people here are very unprofessional. The staff were extremely rude when I checked in at labor and delivery and the pharmacy. At labor and delivery, the registration woman was on the phone while I waited about 30 minutes. A nurse had to ask her to help me. She looked up and rolled her eyes. Her tone was rude, and it was clear she was annoyed that I needed assistance. At the pharmacy, the woman only stared at me without speaking. When I said my number had been called and I was at the window to collect medication, she rolled her eyes and immediately asked for my DoD ID number. She did not verify my date of birth and simply tossed my medication onto the counter.

This place is awful. They stuck my eight-month-old child four times and still could not draw blood. The cast was removed from his broken foot, but three or four hours later it still had not been replaced. I asked for medication twice but never received it, so I could not relieve his pain. Some doctors were kind, but the X-ray doctor was terrible. I would rather pay a bill at a good hospital than return here.

I visited PNH Hospital on September 18 and September 20 because of severe pain; the second visit was because I had not followed the medical instructions strictly. During my first visit, Dr. C. Treager and his team evaluated and treated me. I found him patient, kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about patient care. Thank you very much, Dr. Treager! When I returned to PNH Hospital, I was less stressed than during my first visit and had more opportunity to interact with the staff. At admission, a capable, kind, and patient trainer was guiding her trainee through various tasks. My triage nurse, Lilah/Layla, was very kind and listened carefully to my condition. Then there was Dr. Hazel Rigg! She is a very kind and dedicated doctor. Before reporting to or consulting her supervisors, Dr. Jain and Dr. Manzi, she listened carefully, took notes, and showed genuine concern. An excellent team! Professional, organized... and humane! Nurse Courtney Crawford was equally outstanding! She was professional and attentive, and even the injection was... quick and easy! Thank you all for giving me an excellent emergency-room experience despite my severe pain. I truly appreciate you.

Good for CT scans and MRIs 👍. Parking is almost always difficult. The entrance and exit roads need repaving as soon as possible. Most importantly, do not let your doctor refer you to this hospital's cardiologists if you are under 45; this department will not take you seriously. From what I have personally seen and experienced, they do not believe in genuine preventive care and even refuse baseline testing and treatment for heart-related issues recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC). Unless something is seriously wrong with your heart or you have already had a heart attack, they will send you away empty-handed. For care, concern, and attentiveness, they receive 0/10 👎.

Should we trust that someone who believes it is acceptable to present themselves this way online has the empathy, competence, and professionalism to set aside their feelings and give service members and their families the respect, dignity, and care they deserve, even when they hold different views? If leadership believes the way Naval Hospital employees present themselves online has no effect on the public, that is a second serious failure. This is a Naval Hospital... Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, you can do better. The standard for caring for service members who sacrifice so much should not be, “Did you die?”

Just to be clear, this place deserves -stars. During a procedure, when I asked to be put under, they said—and I quote—“There are no nerve endings on the cervix, so it will not hurt.” No woman, or anyone else, should go to this place. Listen carefully. Do not go.

I recently had an unpleasant experience at the base checkpoint. During routine entry procedures, a staff member named Nicholas Mars was extremely rude to me. Instead of maintaining a professional and courteous manner, he swore at me and used insulting language. I understand that security personnel work under considerable pressure, but verbally abusing anyone entering the base is completely unacceptable. Such behavior reflects poorly on the base's professionalism and respect for visitors. I hope this issue is addressed so future visitors receive the courtesy and respect expected from military and security personnel.

I underwent oral surgery at the dental clinic and am very grateful for the attentive care. Thank you for being so kind, compassionate, and professional...from a grateful veteran.

I waited on the phone with the OB-GYN/Women's Health office for over two hours. Edit: No one answered from 12:30-15:30, when the clinic closed. I waited the entire time.

Do not deliver your baby here!!! I gave birth here in 2022 and 2023, and both times my epidural was placed incorrectly, causing nerve damage. My first delivery was an induction, and the epidural was the only problem. The second time, my water broke. I rushed to the hospital after telling them, but they even asked whether I was sure, although I had a towel between my legs that was soaked during contractions and fluid was dripping onto the floor. The labor nurses were mean girls from hell. Honestly, even other hospital staff told me they were mean girls who became nurses. During my second delivery, when my husband was not in the room, they spoke to me harshly and made me very uncomfortable. They seemed annoyed that I was in labor. After my son was born, they tried to force a catheter into me, as they had done to several other mothers, because they said I had not urinated enough after delivery. After several minutes of screaming in pain louder than during labor, they gave up, even saying my body was rejecting it while actively trying several times to insert it. Only one nurse treated me like a person, a very kind Black woman with an accent. She was the only person who made me feel human there. I have heard many horror stories about this hospital’s maternity ward and NICU. They neglected my son in the NICU so severely that he needed steroid cream because his skin was burned after nurses failed to change him while I was away. The nurses here seem to dislike their jobs and resent having to do them. I could write much more about my experience and what I have heard from others, but I wholeheartedly recommend delivering anywhere but here. You will be treated as less than human despite having many better options. Do yourself a favor and do not become another victim with a personal horror story about traumatic childbirth here.

I am at Portsmouth now, and I can clearly hear the doctors joking about my condition. I immediately lost confidence in the people about to care for me. I am not joking about my situation, and as doctors, neither should they… I am considering what to do next. They can remove my IV at any time and send me elsewhere. I am tired of feeling worthless in the emergency department.

The worst pharmacy in the Navy, even with the new system.
    Dec 1, 2025
Scheduling is terrible. I went two months during the middle of my pregnancy without seeing an OB-GYN.
    Nov 20, 2025
Do not come here for birth control. It is never open as posted. I called yesterday and was told the hours were 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Today was my third attempt, and they said they could not see me because it was too late, at 8 a.m. They were also extremely rude.
    Nov 18, 2025
I delivered my baby here and cannot praise the experience enough. I was very frightened during labor and had some extremely serious moments, but everything was handled quickly and with great care. The medical staff communicated very well with me. Given the circumstances, the postpartum care was also excellent, especially since the experience could have been deeply traumatic. I am very grateful to the labor and delivery team for trying every option before deciding on a cesarean section, which allowed me to deliver vaginally.

    Frustrating
    Dec 30, 2025
On the 29th, the allergy department staff were unpleasant and openly showed that they wanted to finish work quickly. I understand that I was 12 minutes late, but I often wait 30 minutes to an hour or longer to see a doctor. They said they could not see me because my appointment was at 1:40 and they had a patient at 2:00, which I understood. When the 2:00 patient did not arrive, I asked to be seen, but they made excuses about needing to finish their day. They were very rude and showed no dedication to their work.
    Dec 26, 2025
This may apply to many healthcare facilities, but if you are a woman seeking care in this emergency room, do not expect them to take you seriously.
    Dec 24, 2025
The wait time was the only drawback. Everything else was excellent, especially once we entered the restaurant.

I scheduled a pediatric appointment here when my son was ill. I usually go to Fort Eustis, but they had no availability. The doctor and soldiers were kind, respectful, and friendly, but the older woman and man at the front desk were extremely rude. They acted superior, as though asking, “What do you want?” rather than, “How can I help you?” It made me never want to return.

I spent two hours calling the mammography clinic, waiting for them to schedule my biopsy. If they had let me remain at Sentara, I would have completed the biopsy and received the results a month ago. I left a message last time and never received a response.

I cannot imagine a better team of doctors and nurses to help my wife and me through our newborn's difficulties. The NICU and PICU staff were outstanding and deserve every accolade.

Dr. Lucas saw me and was a pleasure to speak with—respectful and professional. I then received a vaccine. Seaman Dutton also examined me and was very professional and attentive. She noticed I was about to faint and called her supervisor. Lieutenant Colonel Brown handed me a bottle of water. These are true comrades. Thank you for keeping us alive!

I was transferred from the Hampton VA Medical Center to PNH with heart and organ failure, basically a dying old sailor. I spent nearly three weeks in intensive care and was blessed with the best care in the world. After one procedure, I opened my eyes and saw two figures in the dark, lit by the red glow of the equipment, watching me closely... I asked if they were angels... A voice in the darkness replied, “Sometimes.” I fell peacefully asleep. Now I feel healthier than ever and work outdoors as I did when I was young. I am deeply grateful to the sailors who operated on me and cared for me. I am also immensely proud of the U.S. Navy—its medical system and professionalism. I am one very lucky Coast Guardsman.

I went to the emergency room at 6:30 p.m., and as I write this review, nine hours have passed and I still have not seen a doctor. I do not understand how they define an “emergency,” but waiting 9 to 10 hours for medical attention is certainly not emergency care. If your situation is urgent, I recommend going elsewhere. Otherwise, you may die here waiting for treatment. Cory P

I sincerely thank the entire medical team at Portsmouth Hospital. Thank you to the pediatric oncology/hematology physicians, cardiologists, hospitalists, pediatric intensive care physicians, infectious disease physicians, pediatric surgeons, pediatric specialists, physical therapists, and every doctor, nurse, and healthcare professional who cared for Raiden throughout his treatment. During such a difficult time, their compassion, professionalism, and support meant more to our family than words can express. We will always remember it.

I have called more than a dozen times for an update on my husband, but they continue to refuse to provide any information. I do not know whether he has died or is still on a ventilator. I have no idea what is happening, even though I am his wife—his next of kin, his proxy, his everything—and they refuse to tell me anything.
