Doctor Introduction

Dr. Liyun Li, United States

Dr. Liyun Li graduated Phi Beta Kappa from MIT and earned her medical degree with honors from Harvard Medical School, where she studied stem cell biology and developed a strong clinical interest in women's health. After completing her obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Dr. Li completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) at Columbia University in New York, where she trained under pioneers in in vitro fertilization (IVF) and egg donation. During her fellowship, her research focused on how obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affect egg and embryo health.

After her fellowship, Dr. Li returned to the Bay Area and joined the other physicians at PFC, where she has since developed a busy and thriving practice. She believes successful fertility care is built on a trusting partnership between patient and provider, and therefore takes a patient-centered, personalized approach. In addition to focusing on endocrine conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypothalamic/pituitary dysfunction, Dr. Li treats women and men with a wide range of fertility needs. These include egg freezing, in vitro fertilization, comprehensive chromosome screening (CCS), and third-party reproduction using donor eggs and gestational surrogacy. She is a skilled laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeon.

Dr. Li is fluent in spoken and written Mandarin. Her language skills and unique childhood spent in China, Canada, Europe, and the United States have inspired and motivated her to care for diverse populations in the Bay Area and abroad. In 2014, Dr. Li led the development of PFC's Chinese Patient Program, which continues to grow each year and has earned a reputation in Asia as a preferred U.S. destination for fertility services.

Dr. Li is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and REI, is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), and is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI). In 2012, Dr. Li received the Best Practicing Physician Research Award for her presentation on vitamin D at the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society (PCRS) annual meeting. She also served as program co-director of the 2018 PCRS meeting. Dr. Li has also been recognized by her peers in the nationwide Best Doctors in America survey.

On weekends, Dr. Li treasures sunny days outdoors with her family and secretly enjoys being an amateur chauffeur for her children's playdates and after-school activities.

Storage fees increase without limit every year. Regarding procedures, they are content to rely on large datasets rather than truly understand at the patient level why certain medications work in certain ways. They favor averages, which often fail to meet the needs of individualized care.

I had such a wonderful experience as an egg donor at Pacific Fertility Center! The staff were wonderful! I look forward to donating again!

I came to this clinic because it appeared to have a doctor who specialized in my situation. Unfortunately, after several interactions and multiple separate poor experiences, I ultimately had to cancel my appointment and work with another organization. This company is completely disorganized, unfriendly, unhelpful, and isolating. Such a fragmented experience is unacceptable in the modern world. Some examples: - Their technology is below standard; their app and video calls fail about half the time. - Scheduled appointments were repeatedly rescheduled or made unavailable without my consent. - Communication is limited to phone calls, and they leave voicemail only sometimes, so if you miss the call, you miss the information. - The front desk has a "too bad for you" attitude and is completely unfriendly in such a sensitive field. There seems to be no consideration that people rearrange their lives for these appointments. - I tried writing directly to my care team with this feedback and asked to discuss it with my doctor, but she never responded. I tried to work through the difficulties because finding another organization takes time, but the stress of this fragmented experience forced me to go elsewhere. I strongly recommend saving yourself the trouble and starting with someone else.

Writing a negative review was not an easy decision because we invested so much in our fertility journey at PFC. The staff were pleasant and responsive. Dr. Ryan was cold, blunt, and lacked empathy. We cared only about results. We are warning everyone because after three years of treatment and spending more than $80,000, we had zero success. This clinic is purely profit-driven and does not care about patients. As head of the donor egg program, Dr. Ryan clearly does not ensure that the eggs they obtain and sell to patients are of adequate quality. We feel deeply deceived. The final straw was our failed donor FET cycle. After four failed IUIs and one failed IVF cycle, Dr. Ryan, director of the donor egg program, recommended donor eggs. We reviewed the statistics and decided to try, believing we had reached the end of the tunnel. We bought two lots of frozen eggs from Pacific Egg Bank, donated by a young, healthy donor. The 12 "young and healthy" eggs produced only one genetically normal embryo. It implanted but stopped growing at 6 weeks, in the doctor's own words, "because of a health problem with the embryo itself." In other words, 12 young, healthy donor eggs produced zero healthy embryos. This is an unreasonably low number suggesting that something went wrong, which is easy to verify online. The 12 eggs cost $32,000, and embryo development and transfer cost another $13,000. We believe something must have gone wrong in the process. Poor-quality eggs—certainly. Pacific Egg Bank apparently knows nothing about its donors or eggs, or simply does not care enough about patients. Before the FET, we asked about the donor's history of successful transfers. The egg bank would not tell us anything, claiming it was "protecting donor privacy." They simply take our money while patients bear all the risk. When we asked Dr. Ryan why the number was so low, she said it was due to the uncertainty of the process. That was all. Besides poor egg quality, something else may have gone wrong. We do not know whether the cause was the donor, laboratory, retrieval process, or something else. We will never be able to find out. When the second ultrasound confirmed the embryo was unsuccessful, Dr. Ryan showed no empathy and simply said, "Unfortunately, it is not growing." I do not know whether the outcome would have differed with another PFC doctor. This boutique clinic takes money quickly and provides no guarantees or empathy. PFC does not care whether patients become parents. Under its standard procedures, everyone is just a number. There are many other fertility services in the Bay Area to try. At least get a second opinion. We are done with PFC.

Although everyone's experience is different, I had a wonderful time working with this clinic as a surrogate. My first embryo transfer succeeded on the first attempt. I feel very fortunate and delivered a healthy baby boy for the intended parents this January. Love PFC.

My wife and I came here on the recommendation of a fertility doctor I had previously seen. He wanted to perform MicroTESE the same day, retrieve my sperm, combine it with my wife's eggs, and proceed with IVF. PFC was one of two clinics they recommended and was closer to us. I have Klinefelter syndrome, so the odds were against us from the start. PFC's intake process was ridiculous. We had to complete extensive online forms, which is common now, but they only allowed a telehealth video call even though we were meeting the doctor in person 3 hours later. We were already in San Francisco, only 3 blocks away, and asked to meet in person, but they refused. The doctor on the video call seemed pleasant, and we appeared to connect well. In person, however, she was completely different—a two-faced person. My wife can connect with almost anyone she meets, but she could not communicate with this doctor despite their many similarities. The doctor seemed unwilling to help us even though we had been referred. She went on at length about her and the clinic's success stories, which sounded more like failures, and implied that she did not really want to help us. She even made many hurtful remarks about all patients with Klinefelter syndrome, including me, saying that an XXY embryo had no value as a life. Beyond the comments that hurt me, the doctor also treated my wife poorly. In retrospect, I would rather have been firmly rejected than endure the appointment from hell and spend $1,000 to fly there, stay in a hotel, visit PFC, and fly home. That certainly would have spared them a negative review. Hindsight, however, has two sides. If your situation is unusual, choose another IVF clinic. I do not recommend PFC or the doctor we saw at all. They have many one-star reviews for a reason. IVF is already difficult, but other clinics will tell you what can be done without wasting your money and may be better suited to your circumstances.

It was awful. I would not return even if you paid me. If you are looking for a place to help build your family, I recommend going elsewhere, where people will care about you. I am a plus-size woman. When I went in, the doctor took two seconds, looked at me, and said, “Given your weight, I cannot help you. I can get you pregnant. It would be easy, but I will not do it.” The doctor did not examine me or discuss any other options. All I was told was, “I will not help you.”

My journey with PFC began in 2013, when I learned that my AMH was lower than others my age and decided to freeze my eggs. Over the years, I have consistently praised the team at this San Francisco clinic. Dr. Ryan, her nursing team, the coordinators, and every staff member on site have gone above and beyond to provide attentive care. I was fortunate to have Christina as my coordinator, Janine as my genetic counselor, and Veronica as my financial liaison. All three genuinely care about treating patients properly. I disagree with earlier comments that Dr. Ryan is “cold”—that is inaccurate. She is very kind, clear, and direct, helping patients make the best decisions. The realities of IVF can be harsh, and you need a doctor who is honest rather than one who sugarcoats the situation and creates false expectations. In my experience, the other staff, both administrative and clinical, were very kind and did their best to meet patients' needs. During my more than two years of experience, PFC responded very quickly by phone and through the portal. I do not know how other fertility clinics operate, but one major advantage of PFC is that a dedicated coordinator supports you throughout the IVF process, which can otherwise become very complicated and confusing. The coordinator is knowledgeable and always ready to answer questions. That said, since the merger with the Prelude network, billing has become somewhat fragmented and confusing. Unfortunately, this has significantly affected the patient experience and sometimes overshadows an otherwise very positive experience. Billing for Inception cryostorage is particularly disjointed, and pre-merger records are not easily accessible. In addition, Prelude's billing team does not always have the latest practical information when submitting insurance claims. I hope PFC resolves the Prelude billing issues because everything else is five-star quality. A few years ago, when financial counseling was handled internally at PFC, everything went smoothly. The merger or acquisition created the confusion. Despite some minor logistical billing issues, I still gave five stars because every other part of the experience has been excellent. Veronica personally took charge of my account and ensured everything was handled properly, completely transforming my financial experience.

Dr. Strug and the entire PFC team are wonderful. Their communication is excellent, they answered all my questions, and they were easy to reach whenever I had a question or need. Everyone was kind and reassuring. Dr. Strug and his team are knowledgeable and guided me through the journey step by step. Everyone at PFC was respectful and helpful, and I highly recommend them to anyone considering fertility treatment.

I had an excellent experience working with Dr. Strug at Pacific Fertility Clinic. From the beginning, he provided a comprehensive consultation, patiently answered all my questions, clearly outlined the next steps, and guided me through the different options and possibilities. The entire process was easy and pleasant, leaving me reassured and genuinely hopeful. Even after the initial consultation, Dr. Strug and his team stayed in close contact through the Prelude app, ensuring all my questions were answered and connecting me with the right team members to move forward smoothly. I highly recommend Dr. Strug and Pacific Fertility Clinic (PFC)—you will receive very attentive care!

Their billing practices are unethical and misleading, and they failed to honor a promotion they had clearly advertised. My doctor, Dr. Hannon, specifically referred me to Pacific Fertility Center for a free consultation, which I completed by video call with Dr. Ryan. Despite this, I was later charged a $185 consultation fee. More concerning, they threatened to send the charge to collections. Charging a patient for a service previously advertised as free and then using the threat of collections to force payment is unacceptable. This experience was frustrating and distressing and revealed a serious lack of integrity in their billing practices.

Words cannot express how grateful I am to Dr. Strug, his clinical team, and everyone at Pacific Fertility Center! Dr. Strug is not only highly knowledgeable and professional but also compassionate and patient. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly, answer all my questions, and ensure I felt reassured and informed throughout the process. His calm, reassuring manner made an otherwise overwhelming experience manageable. The clinical and office teams were equally outstanding. They were kind, attentive, responsive, and genuinely cared about their patients. They checked in regularly and responded immediately to every question. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Strug and the team at Pacific Fertility Center!

I started IVF at 42 and knew my chances of success were low. Fortunately, I met Dr. Michael Strugger at Pacific Fertility Center, and he did everything possible to improve our odds. He is not only highly knowledgeable but also patient and kind, and you can tell he genuinely wants his patients to succeed. His ethics are the standard by which I judge other doctors. Although every appointment made me nervous and anxious, he made my husband and me feel valued and heard, reassured us, and remained realistic. I am almost certain I would not be pregnant without him—yay, I am now 9 weeks! It is also clear that his colleagues and staff love and respect him. Everyone speaks highly of him and praises his dedication to his patients. I hope everyone going through IVF finds someone like Dr. Strugger to make this complex, stressful process a little easier. My experience at Pacific Fertility Center was also excellent. Everyone I met, from the front desk staff and nurses to the financial counselors, was very kind. They showed me tremendous care during one of the hardest times of my life, and I will always remember and appreciate their support. Even when the news was not good, I left the clinic feeling hopeful, which is unusual for me because I am generally a realist/pessimist, and the reality was that my chances of pregnancy were low. Fortunately, I found Dr. Strugger and his team! I am deeply grateful for the chance to build a family, and Dr. Strugger made it possible. Forever grateful, Shelby

After treatment at another clinic, I transferred to Dr. Strugger at PFC, and the difference was remarkable. Dr. Strugger is exceptionally attentive. He took the time to answer my questions, understand my concerns, and, most importantly, tailor treatment to my specific situation. I felt I had a clear, personalized plan rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol. During the process, we also discovered that I had persistently thin endometrium, which can make frozen embryo transfer more difficult. Fortunately, Dr. Strugger specializes in treating thin endometrium. His extensive experience and flexible approach made something that once seemed impossible feel manageable. I greatly appreciated his willingness to try alternatives to the rigid, single-track approach that some clinics still use. Thanks to his care, we successfully completed an egg retrieval and embryo transfer, a major milestone in a difficult journey. I also want to recognize the entire PFC clinical team. They were consistently warm, kind, and helpful throughout the process. Whether answering detailed questions or helping with logistics, they made me feel supported. I am extremely grateful for the care I received and highly recommend Dr. Strugger and the PFC team, especially to anyone with a more complex or challenging fertility journey.

This clinic has caused us stress ever since we started dealing with them. If it were not for the location, we would definitely go elsewhere because the customer service is terrible. No one wants their wife subjected to unnecessary stress.
    May 8, 2026
This is very upsetting. I used to recommend Dr. Ryan to friends, but after my most recent visits, I realized I had been seriously misled. Although I respect and like her, she recommended egg retrieval when other clinics said they would not do so. I then realized that this clinic cares only about money. Their financial coordinators and billing team are a joke. They all claim to advocate for patients, but it is the biggest scam I have seen. As long as money keeps coming in, they do not care what happens to patients. Worse, their billing representative Tatiana is the worst person I have ever dealt with. They show no respect for women going through such a private and difficult journey. I advise everyone to stay away. This clinic is simply a money-making operation with no compassion for patients. I deeply regret not changing doctors sooner.

Dr. Lee is amazing! Elizabeth, Kelsey, and the entire team made me feel completely comfortable and at ease. I highly recommend PFC for egg freezing and subsequent family planning. I began working with them in 2016 and have stayed in contact over the years. Every visit feels like a breath of fresh air.

Truly wish I could give them negative stars. Do your research before going to PFC. I was a patient with them for years with too many negative outcomes to count. I finally switched fertility clinics after giving PFC too many chances, and I had a successful pregnancy on the first try with the new clinic.
