Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is central Pennsylvania’s only locally based academic medical center. The 611-bed medical center provides patient-centered advanced care for adults and children with cancer and heart, vascular, and neurological conditions. It is Pennsylvania’s only nationally verified Level I trauma center for both children and adults.

 

Hershey Medical Center shares a campus with Penn State Cancer Institute, Penn State College of Medicine, and Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, the region’s most comprehensive children’s hospital between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

 

Our Story

Hershey Medical Center opened in 1970 and has since become one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers. It began in 1963, when Hershey Chocolate Corporation President and Chairman Samuel L. Hinkle called Penn State President Eric E. Walker, Ph.D., to discuss establishing a medical school and teaching hospital in Hershey. The M. S. Hershey Foundation donated $50 million to Penn State for the project. With this grant and $21.3 million from the U.S. Public Health Service, the university built Penn State College of Medicine and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

 

Hershey Medical Center has a long history of developing new artificial heart technologies, dating to the 1970s, when researchers led by William Pierce, M.D., created the Penn State heart-assist pump as a bridge to heart transplantation.

 

Hershey Medical Center faculty and staff continue to work with Penn State College of Medicine to make innovative medical advances through research and clinical trials. Projects range from developing artificial organs and advanced diagnostic methods to pioneering cancer treatments and understanding the root causes of disease.

 

In 2014, the Penn State Board of Trustees established Penn State Health, a multi-facility health system that now serves 25 counties in central Pennsylvania and employs 20,900 people.

Although a trip to the emergency room is never pleasant, I want to share my recent experience accompanying a family member there. He arrived by ambulance, so the medical staff attended to him quickly. I especially want to recognize the emergency room staff who cared for my brother while he had severe pneumonia and cellulitis. Every healthcare professional we encountered showed compassion, professionalism, and efficiency. They also kept my brother and me informed throughout his care about what was happening and why. Thank you to the emergency room staff for taking such good care of my brother.

The emergency room here is terrible. The nurses and doctors were extremely dismissive. They placed my fiancée's central venous catheter incorrectly and then left her sitting in pain with it for several hours.

The emergency room wait times are terrible. My spouse and I have been here three times over the past two years, and each time the wait exceeded four hours. Each visit was on a different day, all in the early afternoon. Every time, his orthopedic clinic said it would call ahead so the emergency room wait would be shorter. Did it help? Not once. Many people without insurance can only seek care in the emergency room, which makes the problem worse. The U.S. healthcare system has many flaws and urgently needs improvement. It is now on the brink of collapse.

What a terrible experience. My grandfather had been here since 2025 6 7, and it was already 8 16. They kept scheduling surgeries, and just as he was about to be discharged, they said his condition had "worsened" and he could not leave. I was scared because he had already undergone four surgeries and the cost would be high. Worse still, he lost two phones because a nurse left them on his hospital bed and they ended up in the dryer. This put my mother under enormous stress. She constantly worried about my grandfather's health and whether he would survive. He eventually passed away. Because of the hospital's decisions, our family could not do anything that summer, and my mother was so upset that she even canceled our usual beach trip. It made our summer incredibly difficult and depressing. Continuing to keep my grandfather here unnecessarily only made life more painful for our entire family. My grandfather died after spending a month in this hospital. Also, if you are pregnant, do not come to this hospital; their delivery care is poor.

Assistant physician Mr. Dobson appears to exhibit class- or status-based discrimination. I was injured by a chainsaw on my leg. He asked if I had any other injuries, and I said no, only the head injury. He looked serious and not very pleased. I said that although my injuries were genuine, he was referring to medical issues, and I couldn't tell from his expression, so I assumed he was more old-fashioned and spoke directly. Then I said the injury was below the knee. The doctor examined it and sarcastically mentioned my medical insurance, because I don't have any and need it. He said this because I rely on public assistance. I work full-time, bought my house with full payment, and strive to achieve something in life. My goal is to become self-employed within the next two years, yet this assistant physician assumed a condescending attitude. I refused his treatment and also refused to let him access my medical records. From a medical perspective, this behavior is dangerous. Does the level of care provided by this medical team also depend on status? Is the infection rate higher among lower-class individuals? My daughter had surgery there. The surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and everyone else took meticulous care of her. Strongly not recommended. I waited for hours in the waiting room to see the doctor—I mean over 12 hours. My ex-husband insisted I give birth here, and when I had a panic attack during labor, they actually threatened to take the baby away. Now they’re trying to sue me because my ex-husband messed up the insurance and listed me as the guarantor. This clinic is a complete mess. If I could, I wouldn’t give it even one star.

It is upsetting that people with urgent concerns are not taken seriously here. The front desk staff are kind and polite. The problem is not the staff; it is that your condition may not be considered urgent enough for prompt care. This has happened twice, and both times I felt the patient was not taken seriously. This is a hospital emergency room, after all, but I strongly advise against it if you need immediate care. Be sure to read other patients' reviews.

The cardiovascular intensive care unit was amazing. Dr. Nashid, Dr. Pinelli, Cheryl from palliative care, and every nurse caring for my mother went far beyond their duties. They patiently answered our questions, never rushed us, and were always available.

In May 2025, I suffered a severe heart attack and was fortunate to be admitted to the best hospital. Everything was impeccable from admission to discharge. From surgeons, physicians, and nurses to food service and housekeeping staff, everyone was kind and caring. I would not be here today without them.

I was admitted in critical condition with only 15%-20% heart function and on a ventilator. It took just 9 days from being listed for a heart transplant to receiving one. I felt better immediately after surgery and was walking independently one week later. Since then, I have improved every day, week, and month. Every healthcare professional I met was outstanding and first-rate. I highly recommend this hospital for its exceptional care and expertise. I never felt ignored or that I was receiving anything less than the best, highest-level treatment. Its recognition as one of the state's best hospitals with a national reputation is well deserved. They are legends and heroes! 💪

Pediatrician Drew is amazing! I usually do not have good experiences at this hospital, but this time we arrived at 8:00 a.m. and were finished by 9:45. Dr. Drew was outstanding—warm, knowledgeable, and kind—and seemed to genuinely care about his patients. I wish every doctor were like him. Thank you so much, Dr. Drew! He deserves a raise! Nurse Kat was also especially kind and helped me a great deal. This was one of the few good experiences I have had here.

We had a good experience at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. It is the largest hospital we have visited, and I was surprised by how busy it was. Even so, the facilities were clean and well organized. Most of the nurses and staff we encountered were attentive, especially those in the surgical waiting room, who absolutely deserve five stars. The surgical waiting area was clean, spacious, and comfortable, with plenty of chairs, sofas, recliners, and a television. The hospital also provides free lockers for personal belongings. The Rotunda Cafe offers a wide selection of food and snacks. Most of what I tried was delicious, although slightly expensive. Overall, we had a very positive experience at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

If you or your child is experiencing serious urinary problems or seeking an accurate diagnosis, I strongly recommend finding another medical facility! My son was treated at Penn State Urology for more than eight years and continued to suffer from urinary problems. About seven years ago, he received a definitive diagnosis requiring surgery. He underwent the recommended procedure and appeared to do well for several years afterward. About three years ago, his symptoms returned, and I took him back to the physician who had performed the surgery. The doctor told me everything was normal and that my son was ‘fine.’ As his mother, I knew his symptoms were not normal. I sought a second opinion at the Hershey location of the same practice. After repeating the same uroflowmetry and bladder scan, this doctor diagnosed my 14-year-old son with ‘bladder neck dysfunction’ and recommended medication for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Both my maternal instinct and my nursing background told me this was not the correct answer. I then took my son to Pediatric Urology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Within 15 minutes of the visit, the doctor identified a likely cause of his symptoms. We returned to Philadelphia last week for exploratory surgery to confirm the diagnosis. Once it was confirmed, the doctor immediately performed corrective surgery and obtained imaging that same day to verify its success. My son was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition and had it surgically corrected—a condition that Penn State Hershey repeatedly failed to diagnose despite my numerous requests for further testing. Every request was denied. Thanks to the outstanding care provided by the doctors at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), my son can now live a normal life free from chronic urinary disease.

Was at Hershey yesterday to see Dr Brad Zachariia for my brain tumor. His is the best!! And everyone that works there are too. Never have i had a rude person there. They all make you feel really good and like they really care. Doctor Zacharia is the best doctor I have ever had. He saved my life twice. And I am very grateful to him. I live in Maryland and the 2 Hour Dr. is definitely worth it. I would rather go there then go to the doctors in Baltimore or DC they may have good doctors too, but I trust him and Hershey more. So if you have problems with your brain and the medical attention, go to see him, he is the best.

This was the worst doctor I have encountered at this allergy clinic. I drove two hours only to see a completely incompetent physician. Despite the website saying they specialize in these conditions, he knew nothing about chronic hives or mastocytosis. He told me I had these conditions because I am a woman and said that statistically my symptoms would magically disappear in five years. He offered no relief, advice, treatment plan, dietary recommendations, or alternatives to antihistamines. He completely dismissed my symptoms—I walk into a restaurant, start having an allergic reaction, and have to run out, yet he wrote in my chart that my symptoms were “not severe.” He attributed my extreme fatigue and exhaustion entirely to cetirizine side effects. For the other symptoms he did not understand, he told me to speak to my physician assistant—which I had already done, and that is why I waited seven months to see him. He forced me to undergo a breathing test and later charged me $2,000 just to determine whether I had exercise-induced asthma. How dare you fail to mention that outrageous cost! I will never return, and I am investigating medical fraud and filing a formal complaint. I drove four hours to another state to see my previous allergist, who ran tests, half of which were positive, and prescribed allergy medication. And guess what—it even resolved my exercise-induced asthma. This allergy clinic is a scam. This doctor’s lack of knowledge and experience could get someone killed. Do better.

Do not go to the emergency room unless you have no other choice! I took my son there. His chief complaints were shortness of breath and pain in his back and lungs. His left foot was swollen after a fall several months ago that had healed but was now swelling again. I told them we have a family history of blood clots. I wrote down: chief complaints: shortness of breath and pain in the back and lungs. Yet the triage staff listed ankle pain as the chief complaint. I was in the room, and no one mentioned ankle pain. They then gave him an ankle X-ray. What? The first thing they should have done was a chest X-ray. If you are going to triage patients, at least listen to what they say. Then they sent us to the waiting room. It was packed, with nowhere to sit. After four and a half hours, we had to leave and go to an urgent care center. We are there now. I have never sued anyone, but if something had happened to my son in that waiting room… there is a first time for everything! 💯🎯 For context: both my children and I were born at this hospital. I used to be proud of that. Used to be!

This hospital always says it is overcrowded and busy, but it is simply unable to schedule patients effectively. I arrived at 2:00 p.m., and it is now after 10:00 p.m. We came because my partner had an emergency and needed an ultrasound. We waited more than six hours to be seen, and then spent another two hours here without any update. This is completely unacceptable!

Based on my experience, I will not return to Hershey Medical Center. I have severe asthma and visited the emergency department twice. Unfortunately, I felt my condition was not taken seriously, and the care was far below what I later received elsewhere. After moving back to New Jersey, my asthma was finally controlled, with better access to care, especially at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJ). At other hospitals, including UPMC and RWJ, I received prompt, professional attention, evaluation, and treatment within hours, along with genuine care. My experience at Hershey Medical Center was entirely different. I cannot personally recommend this facility. I hope they improve staffing, communication, and patient care so others do not have the same experience.

My husband was transferred from another hospital on November 13, 2025. The transfer team gave me a room number before sending him, but someone was already in that room when I arrived. At the nurses' station, a nurse looked down at her phone and ignored my daughter and me. When she finally looked up, she rudely asked, ‘What do you want?’ She gave me another room number, and I broke down when I saw it. The room was filthy: overflowing trash, bags of garbage, feces splattered on the toilet, disgusting items on the counter, a hole in the wall, and an unclean floor. When our doctor saw why we wanted another hospital, he immediately had another room cleaned and moved us there as soon as possible. I swear I will never enter that hospital again. They forgot my husband's meals three times, so I had to buy them myself. I would not even leave my dog in their care.

The doctors will lie to your face and misrepresent the medications provided. They do not care whether the bill goes to personal insurance or workers’ compensation. They will take an X-ray for a soft-tissue injury and send you home as though they did their job. Anyone with common sense knows an MRI is needed.

The emergency room was a nightmare!!!! I went in with gallbladder symptoms and significant pain, but they left me in the waiting room for more than six hours. When I checked, they said I was ninth on the list because my emergency was not considered urgent. This hospital is so understaffed and inefficient that it is unbelievable. For Penn State, you would expect better!!! The young woman beside me left after waiting eight hours. This is completely unacceptable!!! I gave two stars because most of the staff were friendly.

This is absolutely one of the most disorganized hospitals I have ever seen. No one answers the phone. The doctor says one thing, but his staff do not follow through. We have waited more than a week without even getting an appointment to remove the device the doctor previously said could be removed. I will never bring my family to this hospital again. I will go to Philadelphia for care.

No one likes hospitals, especially me, but my experience here was fairly good and worth sharing. I arrived around 9:30 Monday morning with right lower abdominal pain. Around 1 p.m., I was diagnosed with gallstones. I then had another ultrasound for better imaging and was assigned to observation. The only frustrating part was the several-hour gap between the ultrasound and actually entering observation, though I understand hospitals often have long queues and others had more urgent needs. I only wish there had been more communication. Special thanks to the ultrasound technician, whose name I am sorry I cannot remember; she was wonderful and had a very reassuring voice. Several nurses cared for me in observation. I especially liked Willow and Heather, though CC was also excellent. Anesthesiologist David and his supervisor, who was even better but whose name I cannot recall, were wonderful. They explained the procedure and enabled me to avoid opioids during surgery and recovery. I know that is not possible in every case, but they explained my options very well and listened to my concerns. The preoperative team was also excellent. The postoperative team was wonderful too; I felt very ill afterward, but they remained calm and gentle throughout. Surgery went well, and the pain was easy to manage. I truly thank the nursing team for making my surgical experience exceptional. I cannot imagine dealing with people day and night. Every nurse who cared for me was wonderful. They were reassuring professionals who made me feel safe at my most vulnerable. I wish I remembered everyone's name, but I was quite groggy. In any case, I had no negative experiences with the nursing staff and was impressed by all of you.

Terrible ER experience. I arrived in severe pain. The triage nurse merely watched me approach, even though my son was pushing me in a wheelchair. I was visibly in pain and moaning. I had to beg for pain medication. After five hours, I still had not been seen while they kept taking others ahead of me. I finally left.

I came back to write this review because adjusting has honestly kept us very busy, and I finally feel I know what I am doing. Last February, my teenage son was transferred here by Life Lion with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). We had no idea he had diabetes; the symptoms appeared so quickly. We blamed ourselves for thinking we should have known. Everyone—from the flight/medical transport team to the ICU nurses, security, and doctors—was wonderful. They were very patient, taught us about the condition, and supervised us while we calculated and administered insulin. They played educational videos on the TV to help us understand life with type 1 diabetes. They made sure we could sleep comfortably in the ICU and even brought drinks and games to play with our son. One nurse showed us her insulin pump and explained that this was not an ending, just a new normal. Four days later, he was discharged to a maintenance program where we learned carbohydrate-to-insulin ratios, dexamethasone use, finger-stick testing, and future nutritional needs. I am deeply grateful to this hospital and all its staff. As parents, we were devastated. Your kindness, patience, and compassion helped us through a frightening change and gave us the confidence and tools to care for our son. We nearly lost him. Thank you for saving his life!

My wife was treated in the emergency room over the Labor Day weekend. She was there for two days and two night. The staff, despite being swarmed with patients and emergencies great and small. Nurses Alexis and Saliem were awesome and gave great care. Many other staff members were kind and caring also.

Regardless of any personal feelings a nurse may have toward a patient, you absolutely cannot refuse to let a mother have her baby. A hospital is not a prison, but this place makes you feel as though it is. I would rather pull out all my IV lines or do whatever I had to do to get out of this awful place. Never give birth here. It is disgusting.

Whenever my daughter is ill, I take her to the pediatric emergency department at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and every experience has been excellent. The emergency room is spotless, warm, and comfortable, which is reassuring during stressful moments. We are always seen quickly, and the doctors and staff are not only highly skilled but also compassionate. They take time to listen and explain, and treat us with kindness. Knowing my daughter is cared for by such a dedicated team gives me peace of mind, and I sincerely appreciate the high standard of care at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

I love this hospital. Staff is usually amazing and I hardly have any issues. But a few days ago I was there waiting with a friend it was between 11-2pm. A service tech named Hughes, came in to do his usual routine smelled sooo bad like he just smoked 8 blunts on the clock, when my friend mentioned the smell. Hughes responded with an apology, but his breath smelled like alcohol. Did he just go get hammered on break?

My newborn was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) here. The experience was frightening, not because he was ill, but because of the care we received. My husband and I were verbally abused by doctors and nurses, and our child experienced medical mistreatment. We tried to report it to a patient advocate, but this hospital lacks meaningful oversight. We feared what might happen if we left our child alone with these people, so we took shifts around the clock to ensure one of us was always there to advocate for him. If doctors and nurses treat newborns and recently postpartum mothers this way, I strongly recommend taking your child elsewhere if possible. I would never wish the suffering we experienced on anyone.

A great place for pediatric care. Everything else is average. Honestly, this rating is mainly for the cafeteria. Worst hospital cafeteria ever. It is basically gas-station food, even though the hospital serves the wealthiest area in the region. Do better.

My stepfather has been in and out of Hershey hospital for the past 3 years. He was diagnosed with leukemia, currently in remission, but all the chemotherapy has caused ongoing problems. Every medication has led to more problems. They prescribe a new medication, which causes another issue, then prescribe another medication, causing yet another problem. My mother is his caregiver and bears as much stress as he does. When he was recently discharged, they handed her a stack of discharge papers and simply told her to review them. The information was completely wrong. My mother has managed his medications for years and understands how his body responds. She immediately believed the listed doses were incorrect. When she called, they made excuses for why he needed so much medication, but she trusted her judgment and did what she thought was right. Eventually, she found someone sensible enough to confirm that she was right not to give the dose ordered by the doctor because it could have killed him!!! At discharge, she also asked a male nurse to help get my very weak stepfather into the car because she could not do it alone. He said it was not his job and walked away!!! The lack of knowledge and effort shown by most staff at critical moments is disgusting. I am extremely disappointed in this hospital and can only imagine how my parents feel facing this poor communication and lack of effort every day. My mother only wants what is best for my stepfather and tries to stay positive, but as an observer, I believe this hospital should be ashamed. I have heard frightening stories from others who have been patients at Hershey hospital or had relatives there. I am sure the staff are overworked and have many patients, but essentially pushing patients out the door with potentially fatal misinformation is unforgivable.

My experience at this hospital was terrible. The night-shift emergency room nurses never answered my calls for help. A patient's family member vomited, and after I called for assistance, a male nurse came in, threw some pads on the floor, said nothing, and offered no help. I would rather drive much farther than go to this hospital. In the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), the charge nurse was a rude and unprofessional older woman working on Labor Day evening. She was the worst nurse I have encountered. I work in a hospital and have never seen a nurse behave that way. I overheard her quietly asking a resident to help discharge the patient as quickly as possible. She insisted on discharging us against our wishes. The patient was ultimately discharged without appropriate pain medication, despite having an organ removed laparoscopically. The charge nurse and resident said Tylenol would be sufficient and prescribed no stronger pain medication, antibiotics, or anything else. I work in healthcare and know that prescription medications can be preventive. Unfortunately, I did not note the registered nurse's name.

Terrible experience. My grandfather has been here since June 7, 2025, and it is now August 16. They keep scheduling surgeries, and just as he is about to leave, they say he cannot because his condition has worsened. He is facing 4 surgeries and high costs, which frightens me. He also lost two phones because nurses left them on his bed and both ended up in the dryer. This has severely stressed my mother, who worries whether he will survive. Because of the hospital's decisions, our family did nothing this summer; my mother was too upset for our usual beach trip. The summer has been extremely difficult and depressing. Keeping my grandfather here unnecessarily will cause our whole family increasing pain.

2 stars because primary and Mohs dermatologic surgery off campus were good. The following earns -3 stars. My father went to the medical center in severe pain. They gave him a GERD cocktail, which was reasonable, but discharged him despite continued pain. He left Hershey Hospital for Penn State Hampden, where doctors found severe gallbladder obstruction requiring emergency surgery. Years ago, I went in for stomach illness and received IV Zofran and saline. After two bags of each, I still vomited. They gave an IV drug like Benadryl, and I slept for 8 hours. I awoke still vomiting and left for another opinion. The next day, a Holy Spirit doctor from Camp Hill immediately diagnosed norovirus and prescribed a white tablet that dissolved under my tongue. Symptoms resolved after three doses. I repeatedly complained to patient relations about discharging emergency patients. They should be investigated; residents and students should not staff the ER before graduating. I trusted this hospital all my life and will continue using Penn State off-campus services, but never this hospital for emergencies. Also note that PS responds only to positive reviews, not negative reports, because they do not want to improve. Check whether this happens with other negative reviews.

The care is good, but management is terrible. I arrived at 10:30 a.m. for surgery that should have finished by 12:30. It is now 2 p.m., and I am still waiting in pre-op. Yet if you are 5 minutes late, they refuse to see you, while they can run 2 hours late because of some excuse.

On July 29, 2025, I brought my daughter to the ER based on her symptoms and condition. I was surprised to find a dedicated pediatric area. After registration, she was quickly taken back and given a bed. Every nurse and doctor was kind and caring toward me, my wife, and our daughter. They tried to comfort our very sick toddler, who did not understand the needles. When initial treatment did not help, after two days in ER observation we transferred to the children's hospital pediatric ward. Again, the nurses and doctors were excellent and did everything possible to keep patients comfortable. After several days of care and treatment, we were discharged. I cannot speak for the main hospital, but I would readily return whenever my daughter needs pediatric care.

Avoid this ER if you care about timely care and compassion. I brought my mother to the ER with a blood sugar of 451, numbness in her foot, and loss of control in her left leg, clear signs of a serious diabetic or neurological emergency. Despite these symptoms, we were left waiting for hours while others who came in after us were seen and discharged. I calmly explained the urgency multiple times and asked for help, even requesting the charge nurse. No one took action. We were told the rooms were full, but no triage, no hallway care, and no one checked her worsening condition. My mom could barely walk, and they still made us wait like it didn’t matter. This was a terrifying and infuriating experience. The lack of urgency, empathy, and communication is completely unacceptable, especially for patients in critical condition. Do better. People’s lives depend on it.

DO NOT GO HERE AT ALL!!!! A video went viral showing nurses who would not stop touching a woman's baby and tried to remove the child from the mother. They would not listen to her or let her speak and even called the police on HER for telling the NURSES not to touch HER child. A very close friend also gave birth here and had the EXACT same experience, except a nurse pushed her immediately after a C-section. My friend was standing for the first time after her C-section, and the nurse pushed her hard. Please do not go unless you want yourself or your baby to be injured, harassed, or neglected. This place needs to be shut down!!!!!!! IF I COULD LEAVE NO STARS, I WOULD!!!! THIS PLACE DISGUSTS ME!!!!

This is a long story, so please bear with me. First, my mother was rushed to the ER with heart failure. Her diabetes was ignored, she was treated like garbage, and they transferred her without her or the family’s consent to a terrible ‘rehabilitation center’ that should not be operating. We tried everything to stop her transfer to Amoroso because it was so bad, but they sent her anyway, leaving her with PTSD. The social worker did not care. During one ER visit, a nurse mocked her, treated her as a nuisance, and spent more time on her phone than caring for my mother. After my mother removed her IV, the nurse left while her arm bled heavily onto the bed. She waited 30 minutes for a nurse to return. Now her husband is hospitalized there, and it took days to persuade her to visit because the previous experience caused a panic attack. Next, I personally saw their neurologist for Chiari malformation. After a concussion in February, the visit was useless. I requested an updated MRI because my last was in 2023, but she said it was unnecessary. I went to Johns Hopkins that day, obtained an appointment within a month and an MRI weeks later, which showed 2 herniated discs compressing my spinal cord and significantly reduced cerebrospinal-fluid flow. Needless to say, I am no longer a Penn State patient for convenience. Last Wednesday, my great-grandfather—effectively my father—was rushed to the ER after a heart attack. They initially called it mild heatstroke, although he also had ventricular arrhythmia. A catheterization was planned for Thursday. They prepared him all day and withheld food, then canceled because ‘staff were on vacation.’ He remained through the weekend until Monday and had 2 more arrhythmias. On Monday they prepared him again, then canceled because they wanted UPMC records from when he was 46, although he is now 92 and has since had many procedures at Hershey. Why were those records not requested on the day of catheterization? The doctor then said they would not perform catheterization because scar tissue was likely responsible and would implant a defibrillator the next day, Tuesday. We were called and told that procedure was also canceled. The doctor said this arrhythmia was life-threatening, so why was it not prioritized? He has been hospitalized almost a week. Will Hershey cover the extra cost? Probably not. Family members repeatedly rearranged work and personal schedules so someone could be with him. He and our family endured days of anxiety as procedures were repeatedly rescheduled. His wife, my mother, has end-stage heart failure and is under needless additional stress from the disorder. Hershey must overhaul its operations and patient care, which have deteriorated dramatically. My mother’s mental health has never recovered from her experience, and I will never forgive Penn State Health. This place needs change. If you care for a loved one, especially an older patient, go elsewhere. In my experience, elderly patients are treated like a burden here.

I had high hopes this hospital would help my children. They see specialists here, though we are changing providers. Not every specialist is bad, but they do not know how to listen to patients or parents. Two of my children with diabetes are seen here, and another receives orthopedic care. I am very satisfied with orthopedics, but communication with pediatric endocrinology and urology has been poor. They dismissed my concerns and made my children’s conditions worse. The emergency department was unprofessional and provided very poor care. My daughter went last Thursday and received almost no treatment. I will never return to the ER. I will speak directly to her next urologist about how neglected her care felt.

A terrible place worth warning people about! Never make an appointment or let them touch you! My grandfather was nearly killed here because they do whatever they want and are careless. My husband was referred, and they could not get him in for two months. He was in severe pain and called for help, but they basically said they did not care. They need to think as if patients were their own family!

I had a life-changing accident, broke my leg, and needed emergency surgery. I came by ambulance all the way from State College and met the doctors and staff here when I needed them most. Dr. Henry Boateng and nurse Deidre Shoemaker provided outstanding care. Waiting two weeks in the hospital with an external fixator on my leg was stressful, but they explained the surgery well and helped with my daily needs. All the nurses were wonderful and helped me greatly, even late at night. From learning to use crutches to all the customized meals I ordered, the staff even brought a therapy dog to my room. I will always be grateful for everyone's help in enabling me to walk again and return to school. Thank you so much.

Absolutely the worst hospital!! The NICU nurses were shockingly rude and judgmental. There was another nurse in the adult neonatal intensive care unit who was so rude and disrespectful that I could not believe it! Those nurses make you feel small and judged and speak to you as if you are garbage. They also lie that you said things that are untrue or claim things happened that did not, making you look a certain way. I will never return to that hospital! This is also the second time I have written this review because they deleted my first one so no one would see what I said. I cannot believe how unprofessional this hospital is!!!!! Do not go to this hospital!!!

The neurological intensive care unit staff here were wonderful! I had brain surgery at this hospital more than a year ago and continue to follow up with specialists, including my neurosurgeon, Dr. Church, who is also wonderful. I stayed here a long time before being transferred to a physical rehabilitation center. Many staff members here deserve credit for my recovery and for helping me return to nursing school so quickly. Thank you to the nurses, therapists, and doctors who had such a positive impact on my recovery.

Our experience at this hospital was deeply traumatic. My wife gave birth to our son Dakota, and the care we received was extremely poor. From the moment we arrived, we felt ignored and overlooked. The staff seemed indifferent to my wife's needs and showed little compassion or hospitality during our stay. Our newborn son cried for hours, and no one offered meaningful help or solutions. Instead, we were left alone to navigate this overwhelming and emotional time. What should have been a joyful, celebratory experience became one filled with frustration and pain. The lack of support and attention was unacceptable. It felt as though we were simply another number in a system that prioritized efficiency over empathy. Families coming to this hospital deserve better than what we endured. I hope no other family experiences what we did, and I strongly urge this hospital to reassess its standards of patient care and reception.

With waits of 6 to 12 months or more to see a specialist in the PSH system, you might as well live in a socialist country, where you would see a specialist sooner. Avoid doctors trained through the Penn State system. At the main campus, I had a gynecology resident ask the nurse in the examination room how to set up the stirrups and perform the procedure! I should have walked out. The resident then began using the largest speculum on me and continued despite my repeatedly telling her that she was hurting me. I finally told her to stop and get the attending physician, who told her always to start with the smallest instrument and to stop if there was any bleeding. I bled for ten days after that terrible experience. They sent an inexperienced trainee to conduct my routine appointment without training or supervision! During another visit to internal medicine at the main campus, I saw a resident from another country on his first day of residency. He had to take several instruments out of the room so someone could teach him how to use them, claiming that they were different in his country! Again, they sent in an inexperienced trainee without training or supervision! Penn State Medical Center was once the best medical center in central Pennsylvania. My doctors and experiences were excellent. The residents were wonderful. I could see my PCP and specialists promptly, and the wait for surgery was only two months. But now, please think twice before applying to Penn State Health College of Medicine, and avoid any physician who attended or trained at Penn State Health. The current standard of education and training is below acceptable levels. It has declined over the past 15 years and has become a last resort during the past 6-7 years. Go elsewhere!!! Also, during the pandemic, I had to visit the PSH emergency department while masks were mandatory. Only a few seats were empty, and people were seated elbow to elbow. Only two people in the waiting area wore masks, and I was one of them. Patients stood in a long registration line with no chairs available. Both receptionists wore their masks below their noses. The only place I could wait safely away from unmasked patients was outside, where it was cold. The receptionist told me that no one would come for me if I left the room. She also said they could not make people in the reception area wear masks and told me I had to wait! This institution does not care about its patients or students.

We highly recommend Milton S. Hershey Hospital! About a week ago, both our boys were involved in a serious car accident. Our older son was flown to the hospital, and our younger son was taken by ambulance. The care both children received during their hospital stay was simply amazing. The doctors, pediatric trauma team, and nurses were exceptional and took excellent care of our children! The nurses went above and beyond not only to ensure our children were cared for and comfortable, but also to make our family feel comfortable and supported while away from home. We thank everyone at Hershey for everything they did for our children after this terrible accident!
