Cabell Huntington Hospital named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for 2024

Monday, February 5, 2024

CHH is only hospital in the region among top 2% in the nation

Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH), a member of Marshall Health Network, today announced that it is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for 2024. CHH is the only hospital in West Virginia and its surrounding region to be named a Top 100 Hospital in the U.S.

According to new research released by Healthgrades, this achievement puts CHH in the top 2% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance, along with numerous other accolades from Healthgrades - Specialty Excellence Awards, State Rankings, etc. This is the second consecutive year the hospital has been among America’s 100 Best Hospitals and the sixth consecutive year the hospital has been among America’s 250 Best Hospitals (2019-2024).

“Cabell Huntington Hospital continues to demonstrate its commitment to advancing health and inspiring hope for those we serve in our region,” said Kevin Yingling, MD, CEO of Marshall Health Network. “For two years in a row, we’ve been named among the top 100 hospitals in the country. These rankings provide patients and their care team with a data-driven resource to compare performance in outcomes, patient satisfaction and other significant metrics that matter to them. We are truly thankful for our employees and physicians who made this possible.”

“Being recognized once again on a national level from Healthgrades speaks volumes about the level of care we offer at Cabell Huntington Hospital,” said Hoyt Burdick, MD, chief medical officer of Marshall Health Network. “Our team has remained committed to the highest standards in patient safety and health care quality. This culture of quality and patient safety is shared by everyone at Cabell Huntington Hospital, and is also demonstrated throughout Marshall Health Network.”

Unlike other hospital studies, Healthgrades ratings are based solely on what matters most: patient outcomes. Healthgrades reports that from 2020-2022, if all hospitals, as a group, performed similarly to America’s 100 Best Hospitals, 180,413 lives could have been saved, as measured across 30 rated conditions and procedures where mortality is the outcome.

“Healthgrades commends Cabell Huntington Hospital for their leadership and continued dedication to high quality care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “As one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals, Cabell Huntington Hospital is elevating the standard for quality care nationwide and ensuring superior outcomes for the patients in their community.”

Wonderful people, and the staff are amazing and incredibly friendly ♥️

This is a mixed review. The level of patient care at this hospital is deeply concerning. Finding a patient room is a nightmare, and about half the doctors are mediocre. The hospital is enormous, yet surprisingly little space is actually used for patient rooms. Patients often spend several days being moved from an emergency department examination room to a former storage room and then to an observation room before finally getting a proper room. It is shocking how low a priority patients are here. We have moved both our family's care and surgeries to other hospitals. That said, this hospital also has some excellent departments. Sheirf, the internal medicine gastroenterologist, is fantastic. The nursing staff are always conscientious as well. This is a good place for a colonoscopy. Their new breast health clinic is outstanding. The staff at the pulmonary center, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, and physical therapy departments are also excellent. I would give these departments five stars without hesitation.

Every single person I encountered was amazing. RN Keith was phenomenal, as were several others whose names I cannot remember. I was thoroughly impressed with the care I received, the communication with my husband while I was in surgery and recovery, and the flawless execution of the entire process. Dr. BhuZgaib explains things in a way that is easy to understand and made me feel confident about the surgery. He is so kind and compassionate. I have raved to everyone about my experience!!! Thank you!!!

My delivery experience at this hospital: The labor and delivery nurses and doctors were very kind and did their best to make my delivery as comfortable as possible. They were also attentive. However, the room itself was dated and not very clean. My sheets were stained, and the bathroom was somewhat dirty. Looking around, the entire hospital also felt rather run-down. It was also the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in. My baby and I both received good care. I felt the postpartum unit was sometimes not as good as labor and delivery. Some nurses were not very communicative or helpful. I also want to mention that they do not provide any food for spouses after delivery, which I think they should. I wanted to note this in my review so future parents do not go hungry. Also, because this is a teaching hospital, they often sent inexperienced phlebotomists to draw blood, and they repeatedly could not find a vein—something I had never experienced before. I left with bruises all over my arms, and the blood draws hurt, which was the last thing I needed after giving birth the previous day. Ultimately, however, my baby and I were well cared for. Although this is not the cleanest or most advanced hospital, I truly appreciate my doctors, maternity nurses, and the attentive care they provided.

I had always had a good impression of my primary care doctor, but at my last visit I saw another doctor who did not listen to me at all.

This is the best hospital I have ever stayed in. They took exceptional care of me. My doctor and care team were very kind and helped resolve my problem. I am recovering now and cannot wait to see them again for my next surgery. They made my hospital stay much more pleasant, and I sincerely thank them for the excellent service.

I am very satisfied with the care provided by Marshall Health in Scott Depot, West Virginia.

(Most of) the staff are very professional and courteous. I was very satisfied with my care!

Do not send your loved ones here! Especially not to the ICU. These are the most unprofessional and uncaring people I have ever encountered. They watched my father near death, struggling to breathe alone, and ignored him. He struggled to ask for a sip of water, and they treated him like a burden. Do not send your loved ones here!

I had been with high blood pressure for over a week. I didn't know what to do. I had called my family doctor that I had only met one time and I really didn't get no answer back and my blood pressure was climbing high and if it hadn't been for the pharmacist telling me that I need to get to the emergency room, I don't know what I would've done. I wasn't pleased on that matter but with the hospital the ER everything was perfect. Thank you.

Their communication is extremely poor, and getting a response is nearly impossible. Calling is a waste of time because they never respond. This is the worst hospital I have encountered. Communication among doctors is terrible, and they do not return calls even in critical, potentially life-threatening situations.

This place is nowhere near as "autism-friendly" as it claims. Take pre-admission registration at Cabell Huntington Hospital. My autistic nephew and I waited here for more than an hour just to complete pre-admission registration. You waste a great deal of money on so many employees while making autistic children wait needlessly, which is very distressing for them. We had to visit three desks just for pre-admission registration. First you register at the preregistration desk, then go to the registration desk. There, you wait to be asked questions before finally reaching the pre-admission registration desk, where you wait again for a nurse to ask more questions before going to the lab. Several staff members work at each desk. Reduce registration to one desk. That alone could eliminate 5 positions and save other patients time. Staff at every desk were also using their phones. Another group of staff were gathered together watching videos. Human Resources needs to conduct a job review of every department and its staff. Do better!

Since moving to the area about ten years ago, our family has used CHH as our primary hospital. I have had many interactions with its staff and doctors. No hospital or institution is perfect, but I can confidently say this is among the best. The emergency department, most ward staff, laboratory, radiology, and doctors are excellent. Even maintenance and cleaning staff are courteous. Over the years, I have visited CHH at least a hundred times as a patient or family member, with only a handful of unpleasant experiences. I cannot give five stars because every institution has room to improve.

I hate the emergency room. The emergency room staff are very rude. The security guards at every entrance also keep trying to chat you up. Stay safe. The emergency room staff may make you wait too long. You could die.

Super clean, and the staff were wonderful. I was shocked to learn that my room was tiny and had no bathroom for an overnight stay after abdominal surgery. They told me to use the public restroom at the end of the hall. I could not believe it! The staff told me this was Cabell's “policy.” If they disclosed such an inconvenient “policy,” patients could make an informed decision. Buyer beware!!!

Our experience with one of their social workers in the NICU was absolutely terrible. That woman should not work with families struggling with premature infants. Even after we asked that she not return to our baby's room, her supervisor brought her back and allowed her to continue insulting and lying to us. Without witnesses, she did not care what she said. We actually told her, ‘Wow, you really are not a good person,’ and it did not affect her. She also had private information she should not have been able to access. If you have a problem, do not expect the patient advocate to help. After telling us their process was not punitive, we realized she meant it was not punitive toward employees. Our punishment for speaking with the patient advocate was swift and severe retaliation.

My brother-in-law was hospitalized here with a fractured femur... They not only refused to provide an in-person interpreter—the video kept cutting in and out—but also refused to transfer his care closer to where we live, even though his brother is the only person here to care for him. I will file a complaint because they are clearly racist!

I would only go to CHH. They are very attentive and caring, and the nurses and doctors are wonderful people. They answer every question, provide clear instructions, and educate patients about their care and diagnosis.

The worst hospital ever.

I was transferred here from Beckley Hospital. They knew I was coming. I cannot describe how quickly they worked to get me into surgery for appendicitis. Kind people—and the surgeon—thank you! Whoever stitched my abdomen deserves recognition. Meow 🤣

I am undergoing a second surgery to repair all the damage Zhang and his team caused to my arm. Nine years later, I have needed two more operations to repair what incompetent doctors and staff did to me. If you value your life, do not go there. The worst hospital I have ever visited. It needs to close. ASAP! Run!

Recognition for the excellent and compassionate MRI team who cared for me during my procedure. Thank you, Amanda and staff.

They left my mother in the waiting room for more than 8 hours after being told that her right arm was numb and she could not move it. There is no reason to make people suffer like this. You need to get things sorted out because that is absolute nonsense****.
