About Us

Circle of Life Women’s Center in Ogden, Utah was founded December 3, 1999, with a singular purpose in mind: caring for the health and well being of women. Circle of Life and its team of devoted professionals provides unparalleled full-service women’s healthcare including routine obstetrics, high-risk obstetrics, gynecological services, infertility counseling and treatment, and state-of-the-art surgery. Since the doctors of the center believe a picture is worth a thousand words; every prenatal visit includes an ultrasound. At Circle of Life, extraordinary care is not uncommon. It is the motivation for every decision, every patient consultation, and everyday practice. Extraordinary care is what they do.

 

Circle of Life Women’s Center’s mission statement exemplifies not only an attitude, but a firm commitment: “To provide the best outcome in the most compassionate, friendly, and comfortable surroundings as possible.” It is their philosophy: “Patients come first.”

 

 

The Center traces its roots back to the late 1989 when Dr. Jed Naisbitt, M.D., who had been successfully practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology at what was then known as the Ogden Women’s Clinic, determined to venture out and establish a practice of his own. He had a passion and a desire to eventually develop his new private practice into a comprehensive women’s center. Dr. Naisbitt was already known and respected in the community and thus his practice steadily grew over the next few years. To expand services, Dr. Naisbitt recruited the first midwife in 1996. Over time, additional midwives were integrated into this thriving practice. In order to meet the growing demand for service. Dr. David Bierer, M.D., who had been practicing at the Ogden Clinic, joined forces with Dr. Naisbitt in 1999. The partnership was very natural as these two doctors worked well together and embraced similar patient care philosophies. Together, they grew the practice and founded the Circle of Life Women’s Center in 2000. The conception of the center’s name was born out of their shared desire to provide care for women at every stage of life; supporting women’s health from childbirth to old age.

 

A slogan the center uses is “Tenderness with Technology”; created to signify that Circle of Life’s team cares about its patients, cares about each patients’ outcome, and is committed to utilizing the most up-to-date technology. This unconditional dedication has helped the center to flourish. They soon outgrew their current space and knew it was time for a change. Investing in a different location would allow the center to operate more efficiently and better server its patients. The decision was not without obstacles. The center was one of the first businesses to build in the area. As such, the center incurred the added expenses and effort to establish major infrastructure required to begin business. Thus, the center essentially paved the way for other businesses to be able to co-locate without extensive infrastructure costs.

 

 

On September 1, 2000, the staff and providers began the monumental task of moving into the larger, more modern facility. On September 5, the new Circle of Life Women’s Center opened its doors for business. Circle of Life hit the ground running and has continued to grow.

 

Over the years, Circle of Life has served thousands of women, helped childless mothers achieve the dream of holding their own little one in their arms, and has lent a hand in delivering a considerable number of babies. Every day miracles happen. Circle of Life Women’s Center is proud to be involved in those special moments.

We love it here. Dr. Brown delivered our daughter and was incredibly helpful throughout the pregnancy and delivery. He is a wonderful doctor. He never made any question seem silly and was always willing to help.

I came here for an IUD insertion. My nurse was Laura Blackett, and she made me feel genuinely cared for and heard. She was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. She is truly wonderful, and I would recommend her to everyone!

Menopause is not something that can be treated by a general obstetrician-gynecologist. You need a menopause specialist. Dr. Laura Blackett is exactly that kind of expert. I am very grateful to have received her attentive care and treatment; she listens to my concerns and takes the time to address my needs. I like it here, and I like Dr. Laura.

I have had multiple miscarriages, and they said my test results were normal and there was nothing wrong with my body. But I kept miscarrying until I finally switched hospitals, where I immediately received the treatment I needed. This hospital simply does not take patients seriously and shows no concern for their needs. I have discussed this hospital with many friends, and they all say the same thing.

If you are like me, scrolling through TikTok horror stories about first Pap smears or pelvic exams, shaking with anxiety, and wishing you could find one of those kind, patient, nonjudgmental doctors on TikTok, come here! I am writing this review because I had been searching for exactly that kind of doctor, lol. Dr. Kaitlin Ellison is very kind, approachable, and welcoming. Within seconds, she turned my first visit from terrifying into very comfortable. She listened carefully to my concerns without any judgment. I would absolutely recommend her. Also, if you are very afraid of a Pap smear or a similar exam, I recommend taking ibuprofen and Tylenol 30 minutes beforehand. I had no cramping or discomfort at all. For me, it did not hurt; it just felt slightly strange and uncomfortable for about 20 seconds. Again, I highly recommend her! :)

Dr. Julia Johnson was my physician. Everything was fine until I had an IUD inserted after giving birth. Afterward, I did not receive the care I deserved. She inserted it so forcefully that I began bleeding heavily, followed by ongoing pain and spotting. When I called, they said I could only wait because it was normal. Three months later, nothing had changed. They then suggested the strings might be too long and needed trimming, but Julia's next appointment was six weeks away. I booked it and kept waiting because I wanted the doctor who inserted the IUD to examine and correct it. After all that time, they called today to say Julia accepted my insurance only during pregnancy. Wonderful—I wish I had known months ago. Do not go to this clinic. They do not care how you feel or what is happening to your body, will not correct problems they caused, and will not tell you they cannot help. You are left waiting in pain. Honestly, this was the last straw. They truly do not care. Stay away and spare yourself the suffering. P.S. After checking in, you wait nearly an hour in the lobby, another 30 minutes in an exam room, and then the doctor gives you a cursory two-minute visit. A truly terrible place.

Dr Naisbitt is warm welcoming and kind. I always enjoy seeing him and speaking to him on my annual visit. He’s a great Dr! The staff is always professional and helpful as well! I also see nurse Teri Kirkland and she is fabulous ! Thank you for the care I appreciate all of you !

Some people appreciate Dr. Shannon Brennan's efficiency, but I did not. She seemed eager to dismiss me, did not listen, and was physically rough. I am autistic and need a doctor who communicates well and genuinely reviews my history instead of saying my name every five seconds. I came for persistent pain during intercourse. She examined only about two inches, although the pain is four to five inches deep, then performed an ultrasound for only two seconds. I hate not being taken seriously. I know my body better than anyone. What is the point of seeing a doctor if they rush through the visit without addressing the problem? My urine test showed no infection, so infection should not be the cause, yet she still said it probably was. An infection would not recur in exactly the same place for several days every time. I drove nearly two hours only to be told it was probably nothing—a waste of time.

Circle of Life helped me have two babies, and I am now pregnant with my third. Dr. Julia Johnson has cared for every pregnancy, and I am very grateful to her! In both pregnancies, she identified health concerns early and induced labor promptly to keep my babies safe. Both deliveries went smoothly, and I was so pleased to see her at every prenatal visit!

After an unexpected emergency, I wanted to leave a positive review for COL Women's Center. I learned that I had miscarried four weeks earlier and urgently needed a dilation and curettage (D&C). I contacted many clinics and OB-GYN offices across northern Utah. Because I had no established physician—I had been receiving midwifery care—and no referral, no one would accept me despite the urgency. Only COL Women's Center showed genuine concern by phone and immediately arranged for me to see a doctor. I am deeply grateful for their care and rapid action, which allowed surgery the next day. The care during surgery was very attentive, and I appreciated how calm and comfortable they made me feel, unlike the rushed, stressful environment of an emergency room. I greatly appreciated Dr. Brett Larsen. He is knowledgeable, calm, and understanding. Surgery went smoothly, and I recovered well. I highly recommend this practice, especially to anyone needing prompt help during a miscarriage.

Circle of Life is the only place I would choose for childbirth and gynecologic care. They are truly professional. Everyone from the front desk to the clinical area is very kind and helpful. I am pregnant with my third baby, and my obstetrician-gynecologist is retiring. He was wonderful, so I had to find a new doctor. Dr. Brown is exactly the doctor I had hoped for. He makes me feel confident, hopeful, understood, and valued. I am excited about this new chapter of my life and delighted to begin the journey with Circle of Life!

I have received care at Circle of Life Women's Center since my first and only pregnancy 25 years ago. Although my providers have changed several times over the years, the care I have received there has always been excellent! I do not plan to go anywhere else in the later years of my life.

Update: I went in for my appointment today. The woman at the front desk was extremely rude. As soon as I entered, she shouted, “We don't accept that insurance!” “We called you and you didn't answer!” “We can't see you because you're not pregnant!” Because I am struggling financially, I asked for a refund. She got up and walked away without saying anything. Someone else eventually explained why she had left. She was incredibly disrespectful. I would not recommend having her work at the front desk. I really like my doctor, Dr. Bilir. He is far better than my previous doctor. A tip for anyone who needs repeat bloodwork: do not vomit, and be sure to bring ice. The nurses will not tell you anything, and you may waste your entire morning.

The staff is friendly. Dr. Caitlin is wonderful, thorough, and efficient. I waited about 10 minutes in their beautiful waiting room before being called in and was out 10 minutes later. The entire visit took no more than 30 minutes. They also offer online preregistration, which makes check-in much easier.

Dr. Brett Larson is absolutely the best OB-GYN! I developed complications early in pregnancy and was terrified. Dr. Larson listened patiently and helped me understand my symptoms, which reassured me. He is approachable and made my husband and me comfortable asking any question. We welcomed our wonderful daughter in September, and my recovery after the C-section went very smoothly! It could not have been better.

Dr. Biehl is my regular OB-GYN, and I am very pleased with his care, but I had an urgent issue and could not get an appointment with him soon enough. I scheduled with Dr. Laura Blackett instead and was very happy with her! She was kind and listened carefully to all my concerns. I chose this clinic because of a wonderful doctor I had seen before, but unfortunately he is no longer there. If you have health concerns or do not want a vaccine for medical reasons, however, the staff will give you a hard time. Because I am Rh-negative, I normally should have received RhoGAM at 28 weeks. When I requested it and asked why I had not received it, they dismissed me as though I were irrational. I gained more than 50 pounds (about 23 kilograms), and my blood glucose was only 2 points below the diagnostic threshold for gestational diabetes. I told Dr. Jeff Brown that my diet was very healthy and that I was concerned, but he treated me the same way he handled the glucose test, saying I did not need it. I later traveled 40 miles (about 64 kilometers) to South Jordan for a second evaluation with my aunt, Denise Nippert. I knew family would not send me in circles for money. She even recommended suing them for medical negligence. With all the records I collected, I still could. I returned fully prepared and confronted Dr. Brown's assistant when she demanded my husband's blood test results to prove I needed RhoGAM. When I told her I knew this was wrong and would sue, I suddenly began receiving the care I should have received. That was a year ago, and my daughter suffered because of their misdiagnosis. The hospital even identified the negligence and noted that recording her birth weight as only 9 pounds despite being born 10 days early was wrong. If the doctors here make you doubt your own judgment, I urge you to start collecting evidence. Otherwise, they will use your insurance while risking your child's health, and for what? To this day, I do not understand why I became a target at their clinic.

I have to say our experience was excellent. I have read some reviews, and I want to say the women at the front desk were wonderful. The doctor we saw was also excellent. Dr. David was very professional. I had been a little nervous about seeing a doctor, but he was very calm. He was amazing, and I think it is important to let him know how much we appreciate everything he did and his attention to detail and care. He is one of the best doctors I have ever seen.

I am very grateful to have Dr. David Bierer as my OB-GYN. I have been under his care for 17 years, and I can confidently say that he is the most outstanding healthcare provider I have ever seen. Over the years, he supported and cared for me through each pregnancy and delivery, as well as several other health concerns. I just had the best appointment! The woman who checked me in was very kind and helpful. The woman who brought me back, checked my vital signs, and took me to the room was very kind and caring. But meeting Laura Blackett made the experience even better! She was very kind, thoughtful, and thorough. She did not make me feel rushed. She explained what happens as we age and reassured me that everything was fine. She was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. She performed the examinations she considered necessary. In my opinion, Life Cycle Women’s Center handles billing and patient communication very poorly. Not everyone has insurance. Uninsured patients must be told the cost of every procedure, laboratory test, and service before it is provided. That is part of patient care—care about their finances too. Unexpected bills are not harmless and can cause serious financial hardship. This happened to our family when laboratory tests were sent out without any financial discussion, resulting in bills for several hundred dollars. We worked with Life Cycle’s billing department and obtained a small laboratory discount, but we just received another bill from a different lab for another test the patient did not know about, and we had to pay it. This is certainly an ongoing problem in American healthcare, but informing patients and considering costs at the doctor’s office would be a major improvement. Please do better.

I absolutely adore Dr. Johansson. She is the reason I keep returning. The clinical staff are always kind and friendly. The front-desk receptionists are not always as friendly, which is why I gave only four stars. Because I work in patient care in a similar role, I understand that the hospital's image requires a gentler, friendlier, and more caring approach. I have been coming here for over ten years and can say this has consistently been an area needing improvement.

Dr. Jefferey Brown is not compassionate or open minded. He seemed rushed, impersonal and didn’t care much for what I had to say or my questions. He seemed to be knowledgeable, but his only solution was to take medication (birth control of course). He was not open to another parts of my lifestyle impacting my situation. Dr Dave Bierer was much better!! 5 stars for him. Compassionate, understanding and patient.

I have been going to Circle of Life for about 8 years. During those 8 years, I have had 1 miscarriage, 1 ectopic pregnancy, and 3—soon to be 4—healthy, beautiful babies. I have always received excellent care from my midwife, Karen McBride, and the other providers I have seen when she was unavailable or I needed surgery. Karen always listens patiently when I speak, which I truly appreciate. I love that they perform an ultrasound at every appointment!
