The body undergoes many changes during pregnancy, some of which may be unwelcome, such as spider veins. These are primarily a cosmetic concern but can be troubling for some pregnant women. This article explains their causes, symptoms, prevention, and management during pregnancy.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins, medically known as telangiectasias, are small dilated blood vessels that appear as fine red, purple, or blue lines on the skin, usually less than 2 millimeters wide. They commonly occur on the thighs, lower legs, and ankles and may appear linear, radiating, or branched.


Spider Veins vs. Varicose Veins

Although both can occur during pregnancy, spider veins and varicose veins are different. Varicose veins are larger, darker—usually dark blue—and bulge above the skin. They generally cause more discomfort and may lead to more serious venous problems requiring greater medical intervention.


Causes During Pregnancy

Hormonal changes and a substantial increase in blood volume during pregnancy can dilate small veins, making spider veins visible on the face, neck, arms, abdomen, and legs. They are most common during the first half of pregnancy and usually fade after delivery, although they may sometimes persist.


Spider veins are related to small valves inside veins. When these valves weaken, blood may flow backward and pool, causing the veins to enlarge and become visible. People who stand or sit for long periods are more susceptible, and genetics may also increase risk.


Symptoms

Spider veins usually cause no noticeable symptoms and are mainly cosmetic. In rare cases, they may cause a mild dull ache or burning sensation in the legs. Consult a clinician if these symptoms occur. Many insurers classify treatment as cosmetic and do not cover its cost.


Treatment During Pregnancy

Laser therapy is a common option for removing spider veins. It uses laser energy to destroy affected vessels without damaging the skin surface. Another option is sclerotherapy, in which a clinician injects a solution that closes the vessel. After either treatment, avoid strenuous exercise and follow the clinician's care instructions to reduce the risk of infection or other problems.


Home Care and Prevention

Self-care cannot remove existing spider veins, but the following steps may help prevent new ones:


Exercise regularly: Physical activity supports circulation and reduces pressure in the veins.

Elevate the legs: Raising the legs while resting helps blood return to the heart and reduces venous pressure.

Avoid prolonged sitting or standing: Remaining in one position for too long can increase venous pressure; move around regularly.

Wear compression stockings: They can support blood flow in the legs and reduce pressure on vessels.

Maintain a healthy pregnancy weight: Avoiding excessive weight gain reduces pressure on leg veins.


When to Consult a Clinician

Seek medical care if spider veins are accompanied by leg discomfort, swelling, redness, or localized tenderness. A rash, ulcer, or color change around a vein should also be assessed promptly. These symptoms may indicate an underlying problem such as a blood clot or ruptured vein.
