News | Bourn Hall Launches At-Home Semen Analysis to Reduce Stress for Men
Embarrassment about providing a semen sample at a clinic may cause men to hesitate, potentially delaying fertility support for couples. To address this issue, fertility clinic Bourn Hall has launched an at-home semen analysis service. Men provide a sample at home, which is then promptly analyzed by professionals, followed by a one-to-one discussion of the results with a fertility adviser. The new service is designed to reduce stress and offer a more flexible fertility testing option.
An innovative service offering less stress and more choice
Dr. Oliver Wiseman, a Bourn Hall fertility specialist and one of the few urologists specializing in male fertility, emphasized the importance of testing both partners. Even when a female fertility issue is known, a male factor cannot be ruled out. “Male factors are involved in 50% of infertility cases, and testing is noninvasive,” he said.
Dr. Wiseman further explained that sperm are continuously produced, so lifestyle changes can improve sperm quality. Enlarged veins in some patients may affect sperm production, but these conditions can be treated. Appropriate treatment and changes can therefore significantly improve male fertility and increase the likelihood of natural conception or successful treatment.
Fast, efficient semen analysis
Semen analysis must be performed promptly for accurate results. Bourn Hall therefore rapidly analyzes samples in its dedicated embryology laboratory, assessing sperm quality, count, and motility. Although the clinic provides a discreet, professional setting, many men are uncomfortable attending in person, which is one reason Bourn Hall introduced the at-home service.
To enhance the service, Bourn Hall partnered with MOJO to launch the at-home semen analysis. Men can provide a semen sample privately at home, after which a professional team collects and analyzes it. The results are assessed using an AI-powered microscope and then discussed during a medical consultation with a Bourn Hall fertility specialist.
Personalized care: More than a test
Dr. Wiseman said, “Men are often very distressed when they learn that their semen analysis results are not ideal. We prefer to explain the results personally so they can ask questions and discuss next steps. A poor semen result does not mean there is no hope. Many treatment options are available, and this is the beginning of the fertility journey, not the end.”
The new Bourn Hall service also offers testing options for women, giving patients greater flexibility. It grew from changes in Bourn Hall's treatment model after the COVID-19 pandemic. Many patients said the flexible arrangement helped them balance work and treatment without affecting treatment success rates.
Bourn Hall CEO and Medical Director Dr. Thanos Papathanasiou said, “Patients value being able to speak with doctors who understand their fertility journey and can offer guidance on improving fertility and treatment options. This service combines the strengths of the world's first IVF clinic with the convenience of testing at home.”
