Knowledge | What is it like inside the womb? Fetuses can hear, feel, and taste earlier than many realize


Before the due date had even arrived, Morgan Rapp was already happily playing with his unborn son, Jesse. He and his wife, Rachel, often took turns placing a hand gently on her abdomen, calling Jesse’s name, and responding to his movements. To their delight, Jesse would often respond to their touch in the right place, as though playing hide-and-seek through the abdominal wall.

After Jesse was born, something moving happened: he appeared to recognize his parents’ voices immediately. He turned his head when they spoke and would even stop crying as soon as he heard them.


‘That trust and connection began from the very first second,’ Morgan said.


Fetuses are not in a silent environment; they experience a sensory world inside the womb

Ultrasound and modern medicine show that the womb is not a silent capsule but a sensory environment filled with sound, taste, and touch.


Hearing: From around 20 weeks, the fetus can hear the mother’s voice, heartbeat, and digestive sounds. By 25 weeks, a loud external noise may startle the fetus enough to urinate.


Touch: The sense of touch begins developing at around 9 weeks. Fetuses touch their faces, umbilical cords, and the uterine wall. By eight months, they already show instinctive rooting movements.


Taste and smell: After four months of pregnancy, the fetus can detect flavors from the mother’s food in the amniotic fluid, including sweet, bitter, spicy, and garlic flavors.


Balance: The mother’s movements change the fetus’s position in the amniotic fluid, stimulating inner-ear development and helping establish a future sense of space and security.


Vision: Although vision continues developing after birth, by the seventh month the fetus begins opening the eyes, moving them, and responding to changes in light.


Does prenatal music education work? Experts caution against treating the fetus as a project

Many prenatal music products have entered the market, including ‘fetal learning’ programs that claim to enhance brain development, coordination, and intelligence and give children an early advantage.


Several experts say there is no conclusive scientific evidence that prenatal music education improves intelligence. Columbia University developmental psychologist William Fifer noted:


‘Nature has already set the intensity and rhythm of sensory stimulation that a fetus needs. Excessive intervention may instead disrupt normal physiological rhythms.’


Placing headphones or speakers directly against the abdomen may disrupt fetal sleep cycles and could even affect normal neural development.


Johns Hopkins University developmental psychologist Janet DiPietro similarly said:


‘The most effective prenatal enrichment is for the mother herself to feel happy and relaxed. If you enjoy classical music, listen to it—but for yourself, not to train the baby.’


Excessive early stimulation may be counterproductive; parent-child connection is what matters

Some commercial products, such as BabyPlus, claim to accelerate fetal brain maturation through heartbeat-like sounds. DiPietro questioned this effort to create ‘super babies,’ warning that it can give parents unrealistic expectations:


‘We should not try to create an ideal child. We should wait until the child is born, learn who that child is, and then provide the support the child truly needs.’


Fifer added that the natural elimination of fetal brain cells is a necessary part of brain development. Excessive artificial stimulation could disrupt this evolutionarily developed process of neural pruning and impair normal brain structure.


Talking and playing music you enjoy are enough: Effective prenatal connection can be simple

Experts generally advise that prenatal enrichment does not require expensive equipment or complex routines. Instead:


Talk, sing, and read stories to the fetus;


Relax, remain positive, and keep a regular routine;


Eat a balanced diet and exercise moderately;


Encourage the father to join the ‘conversation’ and build an early parent-child bond.


The sounds and sensory experiences of everyday life are the first lesson nature provides for the fetus.


Expert perspectives
