Le Dr Mark Akin a commencé son activité privée d’obstétrique-gynécologie en 1983, aux côtés du Dr Harold Brumley et du Dr Vernon Elledge, deux des obstétriciens-gynécologues les plus respectés d’Austin.  Le Dr Akin a rapidement adopté la philosophie éprouvée de ces médecins, fondée sur des soins de qualité et le respect de leurs patientes.  Il a ensuite accompagné la croissance de ce groupe en y intégrant de nouveaux médecins talentueux et en est aujourd’hui le président. Le groupe, qui compte 11 médecins, est connu sous le nom d’Austin Area Obstetrics, Gynecology & Infertility.  

 

Originaire de Wichita Falls, au Texas, il a étudié à l’Université du Texas à Austin grâce à une bourse de football de 4 ans auprès de l’entraîneur Darrell Royal. Il y a obtenu, avec les plus hautes distinctions, une licence en ingénierie de la santé environnementale et une maîtrise en génie biomédical, respectivement.  Il a obtenu son diplôme de médecine à la The University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine de Dallas, parmi les dix pour cent les mieux classés de sa promotion (Alpha Omega Alpha).  Il a effectué sa résidence de 4 ans en obstétrique et gynécologie au Parkland Memorial Hospital de Dallas en 1983, et a reçu le prix de résident remarquable de la Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.  Il est certifié par l’American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology depuis 1985.

 

Le Dr Akin est un véritable médecin leader dans le domaine de l’obstétrique et de la gynécologie depuis plus de 35 ans.  Lorsqu’il était chef du service d’obstétrique-gynécologie au Seton Medical Center, il a contribué à diriger un groupe sur la sécurité périnatale qui a réduit à zéro les traumatismes à la naissance évitables. Il a finalement reçu le National Codman Award en 2007.  Il a été l’un des premiers médecins au Texas à pratiquer ExAblate, un traitement non invasif des fibromes utérins par MRgFUS, et a poursuivi l’innovation dans les traitements médicaux et chirurgicaux des fibromes utérins.  Il a été le premier chirurgien aux États-Unis à réaliser des stérilisations féminines Adiana en cabinet, ainsi que le premier chirurgien du centre du Texas à réaliser des hystérectomies laparoscopiques par incision ombilicale unique.

 

En 2005, le Dr Akin a convaincu ses associés qu’ils pouvaient améliorer les soins de santé pour les femmes à Austin.  En s’appuyant sur sa formation d’ingénieur et sa formation médicale, le Dr Akin a littéralement contribué à dessiner les plans du St. David’s North Austin Women’s Center of Texas, aujourd’hui l’un des centres de santé pour les femmes les plus vastes et les plus prestigieux du pays.  Austin Area Obstetrics, Gynecology & Fertility a emménagé dans ce nouvel établissement en 2009, et depuis, l’établissement est devenu le leader incontesté des soins de santé pour les femmes à Austin.  Ce centre accueille désormais 7,000 naissances par an, soit plus de 25% de tous les accouchements à Austin.  Le Women’s Center assure une couverture 24-7 grâce à des obstétriciens hospitaliers et 6 spécialistes de médecine materno-fœtale, une unité antépartum de 24 lits avec soins intensifs pour les femmes enceintes, et une unité de soins intensifs néonatals de 60 lits.  Plus récemment, le Dr Akin a contribué à concevoir un nouveau centre de chirurgie ambulatoire au sein du Women’s Center, exclusivement destiné aux chirurgies gynécologiques, urologiques et aux procédures de fertilité avancées.  Sa vaste pratique généraliste offre un large éventail de soins de santé pour les femmes, notamment des traitements de fertilité, la prise en charge des grossesses à risque, les soins préventifs, la chirurgie pelvienne, l’incontinence urinaire et le traitement hormonal substitutif bio-identique postménopausique.  Il accompagne patiemment les femmes en s’appuyant sur les analyses de laboratoire les plus récentes, qu’il s’agisse d’évaluer une grossesse par séquençage génétique ou l’efficacité des hormones à l’aide de biomarqueurs et de métabolites urinaires sophistiqués.

 

Bien que le Dr Akin soit obstétricien-gynécologue et traite principalement des patientes, il a également pu améliorer la vie sexuelle de ses patientes' en proposant un traitement à leurs partenaires masculins souffrant de dysfonction érectile. La confiance de ses patientes ainsi que la familiarité du cabinet et de son personnel offrent un environnement confortable permettant à ses patientes d’aider leurs partenaires masculins à rechercher un traitement sans culpabilité, dans un cadre entièrement confidentiel. 

 

Le Dr Akin a collaboré avec de nombreux cabinets d’avocats aux États-Unis en tant qu’expert médical, en fournissant des avis, des dépositions et des témoignages au procès pour la défense comme pour les demandeurs.  Il a été le médecin témoin lors de la première affaire fédérale impliquant l’EMTALA, une loi qui garantit aux patients l’accès aux soins médicaux d’urgence indépendamment de leur situation financière.  Au printemps 2017, il a témoigné devant les sous-commissions de la Chambre des représentants et du Sénat du Texas afin de promouvoir un nouveau projet de loi exigeant que toutes les compagnies d’assurance prennent en charge la mammographie en 3-D dans le cadre des examens annuels de routine pour les femmes.  Depuis, le gouverneur Abbott a promulgué cette nouvelle loi, entrée en vigueur le 1 janvier 2018.  Il a également donné son avis dans des affaires de faute professionnelle en obstétrique et gynécologie, en fondant ses opinions sur des normes de soins reconnues.  Il a mis à profit cette vaste expérience des cas complexes pour aider à former d’autres médecins et infirmières du Women’s Center et à améliorer la qualité des soins dispensés aux femmes.

 

Au cours de sa carrière, le Dr Akin a participé à plus de 100 essais cliniques de la FDA, notamment sur le développement du vaccin contre le HPV, le cancer du sein, les contraceptifs oraux, l’acné, l’ostéoporose, la fibronectine fœtale, le traitement hormonal substitutif, la dysménorrhée, l’endométriose, l’incontinence urinaire, l’artériosclérose et les statines.  Parmi ces essais, beaucoup de nouveaux médicaments et tests diagnostiques sont devenus des éléments des traitements courants pour les femmes.  Plus récemment, il a été l’investigateur principal d’une étude utilisant le nouveau colposcope Dysis, une méthode informatisée sophistiquée de diagnostic du cancer du col de l’utérus.  Le Dr Akin a également été conférencier invité au département de génie biomédical de l’Université du Texas ainsi qu’à la St David’s Davinci Robot Conference. 

 

Le Dr Akin a rencontré son épouse Debi à l’Université du Texas, est tombé éperdument amoureux et s’est marié à l’âge de 21 !  Ils sont restés heureusement mariés pendant 45 ans.  Leurs trois enfants, Amanda, Adam et Abbey, vivent tous à Austin et leur ont donné huit petits-enfants en 3 ½ ans.  Le Dr Akin a également mis ses compétences d’ingénieur au service de sa maison d’Austin, créant l’un des plus grands bassins de nénuphars d’Austin, un labyrinthe de 1,200 pieds de long et une aire de jeux pour ses petits-enfants, comprenant un bateau pirate plus grand que la Santa Maria de Christophe Colomb !  Ses loisirs incluent le jardinage aquatique, les moments passés en famille, divers projets de rénovation, les courses de dragsters et l’assistance aux matchs de football américain et de basket-ball de l’université du Texas.

I've been coming here since I was 16; I'm now 31. Jaki Lockwood and Dr. Seeker are great. My annual visits are always good—I feel heard and understood and feel that I get ample time with my provider. However, their scheduling and responses to issues between appointments leave a lot to be desired. The staff/nurses who respond through the messaging portal have me seriously considering changing practices, which is unfortunate after so long.

In the U.S., medical care can sometimes make you feel like just a number, but Dr. Fiona Esfandiari provided a personal touch that truly made a difference. She took the time to explain how we could address my situation and genuinely listened to my concerns. She answered all my questions thoroughly. I have come here for annual gynecology appointments since 2021 and will remain a patient as long as possible. The office is always very clean and well maintained, and the Keurig machine is a nice touch. Although the gynecologist I saw for my first three years is no longer at the practice, I recently met Jaki Lockwood, who immediately made me comfortable. I am transgender, so finding medical care that feels safe can be difficult. AAOBGYN has consistently made me feel safe over the years. I recommend them to anyone looking for a new gynecologist.

I have been going to AAOBGYN for over 20 years. I no longer work in Austin, so it is a bit of a drive for me to come in each year. However, I love the relationship I have with Kelly, one of Dr. Seeker's NPs. Parking is not always easy, but they do offer free valet service, which is wonderful! I plan to keep going until Kelly retires or one of us moves away from the area!

As a new patient, this clinic absolutely did not impress me. Patiently waited for my appointment to have them cancel 24 hours before. Understand that it happens but then they couldn't see me for another 2 weeks. As a healthcare professional myself, please do better to be more accommodating especially when cancelations are on your end. Also not to mention, I'm getting texts about having a $2,242 bill on my account before ever being seen. 0/5 stars.

I just moved to Austin a month ago and found that my insurance will cover my visits here. After looking at their reviews I had no doubt I wanted to come here. I get seen by Dr. Cowan and let me tell you he’s an amazing doctor! He listens, he cares, and this nurses are the best…so caring and loving!! I’ve had a procedure done a week ago without any issues and my post-op appointment went great also!! 100% recommend this office!!

The staff are always friendly, welcoming, and happy to answer questions. At every prenatal visit, I could see the baby or hear the heartbeat, which was both reassuring and exciting as a first-time mother. I brought my mother and mother-in-law to an appointment, and the nurses were very kind to all of us. They took extra time to show the excited grandmothers the baby and explain what we were seeing. They left thrilled and also loved meeting Dr. Seeker!

I have taken time off work twice to see Dr. E. Both times, I waited in the waiting room for more than an hour without ever seeing the doctor, only to be told I would have to wait at least another 40 minutes. Why schedule an appointment in the first place? I waited several months to see her, time I could have used to find a doctor who would actually see me. I would not recommend this clinic. I understand that emergencies happen, so even after waiting nearly two hours, I readily agreed to reschedule. When I arrived today, the nurse told me the situation and my experience would be different. It was not.

I recently experienced an ectopic pregnancy and had to have surgery, which was one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through. During this time, Dr. Landherr and the team at AAOBGYN were there for me in a way I truly appreciate. Dr. Landherr was knowledgeable and took care of my medical needs during an incredibly overwhelming situation. I had an incredibly positive experience throughout my entire pregnancy journey, and I’m truly grateful for the exceptional care I received. Every appointment was handled with patience, and all my concerns—big or small—were addressed with clarity and reassurance. What stood out the most was the Dr Esfandiari’s dedication and calm approach, especially during critical moments. Dr. Akin is an excellent and highly skilled physician, and his team is outstanding. I recently underwent surgery to remove an endometrioma, and it was very successful. Most importantly, they were able to preserve my ovary, which was crucial to me. He is attentive, compassionate, and extremely experienced. Unlike some hospital physicians who rely solely on the sonographer's imaging report, Dr. Akin performs the ultrasound himself. By directly observing the shape and movement of the organs and drawing on his extensive experience, he was able to assess the likelihood of preserving my ovary and explain the possible postoperative outcomes. As a patient, this was invaluable because it allowed me to make a fully informed treatment decision. My recovery was quick, and I am very grateful for the attentive care I received.

I felt so heard and seen with Dr Akin. He is very kind and understanding and took my concerns seriously. He makes you feel safe and like he takes your health seriously. I did surgery with him and recovered very quickly. I am happy with my choice of going with him.

In 2023, I sought help to learn why I was not becoming pregnant. After 2 IUIs in the Austin area, my OB-GYN referred me for an HSG, and according to the doctor, the laboratory results were normal. At the fertility clinic, Dr. Hansard requested the HSG images and found a problem when she reviewed them. I returned to Austin OB-GYN and told Dr. Akin about his mistake. Every time I visited, he reminded me that I was large. His bedside manner was very poor, and this was difficult to hear after becoming pregnant with IUI and IVF medications. He essentially told me he could not perform an ultrasound because my abdomen was too thick. Today, February 20, I received a call saying the entire facility had dismissed me as a patient. I was transferring anyway, but the fact that I could not express my thoughts about how I was treated was unfair and 100% retaliation.
