John R. Crochet, Jr., M.D., FACOG, is a respected specialist in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) and reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). He is Practice Director and Director of Third-Party Reproduction at Shady Grove Fertility (SGF) Houston and provides care at the Clear Lake and Beaumont offices.

Dr. Crochet earned a B.S. in genetics with honors from Texas A&M University and his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch. He completed his OB/GYN residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he was recognized for excellence in teaching and laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery. He then completed an REI fellowship at Duke University, where he also served as a clinical associate in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Crochet is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in reproductive endocrinology and infertility and obstetrics and gynecology. His clinical interests include female and male infertility, single parents by choice, same-sex couples, donor egg programs, and gestational surrogacy.

A dedicated researcher, Dr. Crochet has contributed to 14 peer-reviewed manuscripts and presented 20 abstracts. His research focuses on IVF outcomes, preimplantation genetic testing, reproductive surgery, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and contraception. His systematic review and meta-analysis on ectopic pregnancy diagnosis was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Dr. Crochet’s patient care philosophy centers on a patient-focused environment where individualized treatment plans are guided by current medical evidence. His commitment to patient education and a positive experience has earned him annual recognition as a Texas Monthly Super Doctor since 2015 and honors from Houston and H-Texas magazines.

In addition to clinical work, Dr. Crochet is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He actively mentors new SGF physicians, medical students, residents, and fellows.


Outside medicine, Dr. Crochet enjoys coaching youth sports, attending MLB and college football games, playing guitar, live music, snowboarding, hunting, and fishing.

Dr. Crochet is proficient in medical Spanish and is affiliated with HCA Houston – Clear Lake and Memorial Hermann Southeast.

Dr. Schnell was truly a blessing for my husband and me. At first, I thought her treatment plan was too aggressive compared with my previous fertility doctor, but it became my greatest blessing! Dr. Schnell took my treatment very seriously, and my body responded very well to her recommendations, including prescriptions, testing, and surgery. She was determined to see us through to the end, which helped us identify issues that had been overlooked at my previous clinic because I had no symptoms, including silent endometriosis. I had more uterine fibroids than appeared on ultrasound, and because they had caused no problems, they had been overlooked for years. Dr. Schnell chose to remove the fibroids and found three more than the ultrasound showed. She recommended ReceptivaDx testing, which led us to use hormonal suppression before the next transfer. We ultimately made it safely through the first trimester and welcomed our beautiful baby! Her experience and expertise were genuinely crucial to our success. I am grateful that moving here from another state led us to her and ultimately to our daughter! Honorable mentions: my nurse coordinators Rozalind and Jayda were wonderful, as were the Clear Lake staff!

Without question, this is the worst and most disorganized group I have ever encountered. They lost blood samples, failed to send them out, communicated poorly, had a surgeon arrive late for my wife's procedure, tried to rush her in and violate protocol, never let us actually see our doctor, and confused our chart with other patients' charts. I could keep listing problems. I 100% recommend avoiding this group before putting your family through a fertility journey with them! In response to your reply: even if I contacted you or tried to, you would still never contact us. We tried many times throughout this process to raise problems and concerns, but they were ignored.

Our appointment was at 8:15 a.m., and we arrived at 7:50 so we could complete any paperwork early. It is now 9:42, and I still have not been seen. All we need is a blood draw. This is absolutely ridiculous. What is the point of an appointment?

Jill Bueno is the kindest person at Shady Grove! She listens to my concerns and does her best to advocate for me when I need her. Employees like her keep clients returning to Shady Grove for fertility treatment. The financial side of IVF can be daunting, but she explains everything in understandable terms. Thank you so much! Managing fertility insurance can be overwhelming, but Erica made everything simple. She was organized and responsive and always followed up when I had additional questions. Thanks to her hard work, I never worried about treatment delays. She handled the insurance details exceptionally well and was also very thoughtful.

If I could give zero stars, I would. They were chaotic, highly unprofessional, inconsistent, and repeatedly canceled my appointments. My final appointment was supposed to be a hysteroscopy, but they seemed not to know how to perform it or explain it to me. There was no communication between them, and one employee kept rolling her eyes. They also failed to send my prescription on time. It was issued on the 27th, but Walmart never received it. On the procedure day, they said I needed to collect a packet or the procedure could not be done. We went, only to be told to visit the Beaumont clinic. The staff there were no help and said the packet was not there. Then the employee said she would get the supervisor. My husband was told it was a man, but it was a woman. They also failed to mention that the clinic was a two-hour drive from my home, making it sound easy despite the distance.

My wife and I came to Shady Grove Fertility on my sister's recommendation. We were very satisfied with the service, communication, and friendly staff and doctors. Fortunately, my wife became pregnant without needing fertility treatment. However, if we had needed to continue, Shady Grove would unquestionably have been our first choice. Everyone at SGF Webster is kind, attentive, and compassionate! The nurses are wonderful, and Bo, the sonographer, is excellent! Dr. O'Hern was our doctor. We will miss her! I wish she could be our obstetrician throughout the pregnancy. Without their help, we would not have our miracle baby boy, due in early January 2026.

Thanks to Dr. Crochet, my husband and I welcomed beautiful twin girls on our first pregnancy. My struggle with infertility and IVF was long, and I am grateful that Dr. Crochet never gave up on me. He has an excellent bedside manner and always made me feel at ease. Kelcie and Brooke are wonderful nurses who always responded promptly and provided genuine care. Gina is my favorite phlebotomist; she always succeeds on the first attempt. She is consistently cheerful and develops a personal connection with patients. Bo, the sonographer, is wonderful—always friendly, quick, and knowledgeable during ultrasounds. Erica in the financial department is excellent and always responds to my questions as quickly as possible. The women at the front desk are also friendly and greet me warmly every time I visit. I cannot wait to return to Shady Grove in the future to continue growing my family.

I have sought infertility treatment since 2017. I transferred to SGF and Dr. Crochet in 2023 and have never regretted it; my previous experience at HFI was terrible. The staff here are always friendly and supportive, especially Brianna at the front desk. Dr. Crochet is also wonderful.

Dr. Schnell is an outstanding physician. She is professional, kind, and consistently attentive. Every interaction leaves me feeling reassured, heard, and well cared for. She explains things clearly, listens with genuine concern, and makes each visit calm and reassuring. Our patient coordinator, Victoria Eason, is equally wonderful. She is welcoming and organized, and her kindness and professionalism make the process smooth and pleasant. I always feel at ease speaking with her. Together, Dr. Schnell, Victoria Eason, Yolanda, Neily, and Brianna create a comfortable, trustworthy environment. Their care for patients makes me feel valued and grateful. Thank you!

I tried several times to contact the office to reschedule, but no one answered. They finally called and told me to come in anytime before 2:30 p.m. for testing. When I arrived at 2:00 p.m., they said, ‘Oh, sorry, we cannot perform the test after 1:00 p.m.’ Very unprofessional.

Unfortunately, my experience at this clinic was very disappointing. It felt more focused on selling services and collecting fees than providing genuine care or medical guidance. I left feeling rushed, disregarded, and pressured into treatments that seemed unnecessary. It is frustrating to expect support and compassion but feel that the relationship with the doctor is purely transactional. I will not return and encourage others to ask careful questions before agreeing to any treatment.

Do not visit this clinic. They will ultimately charge you $10,000 for fertility testing, then pressure you into $30,000 IVF. Dr. Krosh only wants to make money from you. This place is terrible. They seem to care only about money. You would expect a fertility clinic to be warm and welcoming, especially after fertility struggles, but that is not the case here. First, their pricing is completely opaque. Second, the fees are outrageous: a 10-minute conversation with the ‘doctor’ costs $200–$300. They also offer only virtual appointments, which is lazy. Finally, they push only $30,000 IVF, their main source of profit. I warn everyone against this clinic. The staff are extremely unfriendly. If you miss their call, they scold you like a child; if they miss yours, they do not care. We tried to schedule an IUI. Everything was arranged until a last-minute surprise. They delayed us for three months, repeatedly saying everything was ready, then announcing on the day that something else was required. No one here cares about you. You are only a dollar sign.

I cannot praise Shady Grove Clear Lake and Beaumont enough. Although going through IVF alone was difficult, this team made my journey memorable in the best way. Dr. Schnell and Dr. Bruno are the best and helped me fulfill my dream of motherhood. The clinic staff and nurses were also extremely kind and supported me throughout. Excellent fertility clinic! I recently had a procedure here and was impressed by the standard of care. Everyone, from the front desk staff to the doctors, was kind, professional, and highly supportive throughout. I had an excellent experience at SGF. My doctor, Dr. Bruno-Gaston, is highly skilled and genuinely cares about her patients. My husband and I have invested $30,000 in IVF here, but ongoing communication and patient-care problems now make me question that decision. Communication: I explicitly asked the clinic to direct every phone call to my husband rather than me, yet they repeatedly called me. When I reminded the nurse, she only replied, ‘He can call us,’ making me feel my needs were ignored. Reliability: I am scheduled to start self-injections in two days, but the injection kit has not arrived. Yesterday, my husband called 15 minutes before closing and no one answered. This happens repeatedly. Unheard concerns: At a recent ultrasound and blood draw, no one gave me an opportunity to ask questions. I left feeling completely dismissed. Not every staff member is at fault, but some are unfriendly and have made this stressful treatment feel uncomfortable and unsupported. These communication failures seriously threaten the timing and success of our IVF cycle.

Dr. Janet Bruno changed my husband's and my lives. With her help, I welcomed my first child. I cannot praise Shady Grove enough. We love our physician, Dr. Schnell, and her clinical team, Alex and Maria. Alex was extremely helpful during the hardest moments. She was patient, thorough, and gave us time to ask every question. Brianna and Alexis at the front desk are also wonderful. When you urgently need to reach someone, they always make it happen. They answer calls promptly and are consistently warm and friendly. Aurora, the phlebotomist, is also exceptional, careful, and very kind. Shady Grove truly has the best team!

Even one star is too generous. If you want to have a child, do not come here. On my first visit, a nurse came out, pointed at me, and asked, “What’s your name? Yes, you, come here.” At that moment, I knew choosing Shady Grove was a mistake. Communication was terrible: one person said one thing and the doctor said another. Several times I waited without hearing from anyone and eventually had to complain to a supervisor. The supervisor said the doctor would call me the next morning, but no one relayed the message to him, and he was waiting for me to join a telehealth visit. I was still charged for that visit, even though the purpose of the call was for the doctor to apologize and explain. Another time, after an ultrasound, they said I needed surgery but no one called to schedule it. When I called, they said there was nothing in my chart, which was why no one had contacted me. I did need surgery; their communication had simply failed. After moving to a new clinic and receiving my records, I found that their patient coordinator had documented our phone conversation. She claimed that although she had explained certain things to me, I was indirectly expressing dissatisfaction. She did not document the many calls, voicemails, and portal messages I sent before waiting weeks for a response. The patient coordinator’s name was Cynthia or Cindy; I heard both names on two occasions. I never write reviews, especially about clinics, but I could not let couples trying as hard as we were to have a child remain unaware of what happens there. My friend also went there and had a terrible experience; they told her there was nothing they could do. Now both of us are at another clinic that can help us.

Jeanine and Mandi were exceptional during my HSG exam. I arrived extremely anxious, but they immediately put me at ease through their calm, professional, and compassionate approach. They explained what to expect, worked efficiently, and were attentive throughout the process. The exam itself was very quick, and any discomfort resolved within seconds. Their reassurance and competence made a stressful experience far more manageable. I am very grateful for the care they provided and would highly recommend them.

My husband and I had fertility testing to explore options for trying to conceive because we had been trying for some time. At our consultation, although it was our first time meeting Dr. Crockett, we did not feel that we received her full attention. I had blood tests the next day, and the doctor said someone from the clinic would call with the results and schedule a follow-up. However, we did not receive the results until a week and a half later, three days after the testing. Dr. Crockett told us that IVF was our only option. When we said we wanted to try intrauterine insemination (IUI) first, communication began to decline. We were then told, “You need to call to schedule a follow-up; we will not contact you with your results,” which directly contradicted what the doctor said during our initial consultation. To prepare for IUI, I needed additional tests. They were scheduled, but again no one contacted me afterward, and I had to call to ask when the follow-up would be scheduled, even though they had already had my results for five days. Every follow-up was scheduled as a consultation and incurred a fee, which they did not seem concerned about even though the charges accumulated quickly. Fortunately, our insurance covered these “consultations.” I do not recommend this practice to anyone who needs attention and compassion while trying to conceive. They treat people as sources of revenue and as numbers. No one seeking fertility care should be treated this way.

I am writing this while holding the baby I once thought I would never have. Dr. Crockett was wonderful to my husband and me! I truly believe we would not have our daughter without him. At every appointment before conception, he listened to our concerns and thoroughly investigated our recurrent miscarriages. During early pregnancy, Dr. Crockett and nurse Jenny were kind and patiently addressed all my questions. We are very grateful for the close monitoring during those early weeks. Bo, the ultrasound technician, was also thorough and kind. I am so glad my OB-GYN referred me to this clinic!

I do not recommend this place. It lives up to its reputation and is very unreliable. My experience here was terrible, and I completely agree with all the one-star reviews. If I could, I would give a negative rating. Fortunately, I made the right decision at the time, or I would have deeply regretted it.

Shady Grove is a very special place. Everyone is fully committed to the mission, and each person makes you feel like you are the only patient there. Dr. Bruno Gaston is outstanding—she is kind, considerate, and every decision she makes is carefully thought out. Lauren and Morgan are quick, efficient, clear in their explanations, and extremely friendly. During both of my egg retrieval procedures, Amber was in the room, holding my hand until I fell asleep. My post-operative nurse was also wonderful; she is also the manager of the Clear Lake branch. This place is truly unique. They are all focused on the mission. They celebrate with you and empathize with your pain. My journey is still ongoing, but I believe that no matter the outcome, it will all be worth it.

I am so grateful to the entire staff at Shady Grove Fertility - Clear Lake! From the moment we arrived at the clinic for my egg retrieval, we were greeted with warm smiles. Pam, the preoperative nurse, was caring and communicated all the important information gently and clearly. My husband and I tend to joke around, and Pam matched our cheerful, playful energy perfectly, helping us relax and feel less nervous. She never rushed us and patiently answered every question we asked! Amber and Nicole, the operating room nurses, were also wonderful. They explained every step in detail so we knew exactly what to expect! Brittany was very helpful in the postoperative recovery room and made sure both my husband and I were comfortable—after all, this was his first time going through this too! Finally, thank you to Dr. Shah for providing so much comfort and support as we faced this new challenge! Overall, I give this medical team five stars for working every day to help us achieve our dream of building a family!

Dr. Crochet is wonderful—warm, friendly, knowledgeable, always willing to answer questions, and thorough in explaining possible outcomes. After years of trying to conceive and a miscarriage, I felt lost and hesitant about visiting a fertility clinic. Shady Grove Fertility gave me hope again. The entire team was kind and supportive. Mandy always greeted me cheerfully, which eased much of the stress of visiting a fertility clinic. Nurse Jenny was always available and answered every question patiently and kindly. Beau, the technician, was also wonderful and made every ultrasound as comfortable as possible. My husband and I had a long and difficult fertility journey, but Dr. Crochet and his team at the Clear Lake clinic were wonderful and helped us achieve our ultimate goal of having a baby. Everyone was helpful, supportive, and encouraging. I especially loved Brooke. She was always cheerful when she called with updates, and even when the news was not good, she made me feel that everything would be okay. What can I say about Mandy? She was always gentle and kind, and her smile was so comforting. Beau, who usually performed my ultrasounds, was always friendly and smiling. He would talk with me and help me relax during the exam. Jenny was also wonderful. At every appointment, she gave me detailed information and took time to explain everything before each procedure. I will always recommend Dr. Crochet and his team. I believe they are the best! We sincerely thank all of you!

Dr. Crochet and his team at Shady Grove Fertility in Clear Lake are amazing! I struggled with infertility for years. My husband and I decided to drive six hours to this clinic, and we would make the same choice again. Everyone there was exceptional and incredibly supportive! The doctor recommended IVF, and after one cycle our baby is due September 26! If you are ready to begin your fertility journey, Dr. Crochet and his Clear Lake team are the best choice! Dr. Shaw, who performed our embryo transfer and implantation, was excellent. He was genuinely happy for us and explained the entire process in great detail. We left every appointment feeling reassured and never felt confused or uncertain about the process. Shady Grove gave us an excellent experience, especially during a journey filled with fear and uncertainty. Dr. Crochet was knowledgeable, patient, and attentive throughout. The front desk staff, nurses Kelcie and Brooke, Bo—the sweetest ultrasound technician—and nurse practitioner Ms. Price made our time at Shady worthwhile. We are very grateful that they patiently answered our questions throughout. We will welcome our lovely daughter in April. These wonderful staff members made it possible. Thank you!

In 2019, Dr. Crochet performed a laparoscopic myomectomy on me. The fibroid was the size of a grapefruit, and the surgery took 5 hours! He did such an excellent job that when I later had another fibroid removed, the previous incision could barely be seen. He also opened my fallopian tubes. Thanks to his skilled hands and extensive knowledge, and of course God's help, we conceived on our first attempt. Thank you so much, Dr. Crochet!

My husband and I struggled with fertility issues for years. We were nervous during our first visit to SGF, but Dr. Crochet and his team gave us patience, care, comfort, professionalism, and understanding. Dr. Crochet and his nursing team, Brooke and Kelcie, patiently answered all our questions. Brooke and Kelcie always returned my calls within 24 hours. I had several urgent situations during treatment, and when I rushed to them, they addressed my needs. I could not ask for better service! My sonographer Bo explained the scan details thoroughly and helped us understand them. Our nurse Jeanine Price was also warm and helpful. Finally, financial counselor Eric always answered our questions quickly. We had insurance issues, and Eric worked with us patiently and professionally. In short, if SGF is helping you, you are in excellent hands!

Dr. Crochet and his team are simply wonderful! I have had only positive experiences since the first consultation. It has been a long journey, but I am grateful to say that, with their help, I am now nearly 5 months pregnant with my first child. Every staff member is friendly, thoughtful, kind, and professional, which is exactly what you need on this path. Even the financial team communicates very well, and everyone is easy to speak with and reach. Because I attended so frequently for so long, nearly everyone on the team came to know my husband and me. They celebrated every success and were very sensitive to every challenge. I could not have found a better team to bring us this far! I truly love them all and could not have succeeded without them! This was far from easy, but this wonderful team made it a much better experience. Special appreciation for Brooke and Kelcie (nurses), Erica (financial team), the phlebotomist at Quest whose name I cannot remember but who became an expert at drawing my blood, Bo (sonographer), NP Jeanine, and all the medical assistants and front desk staff. I cannot wait to introduce everyone to my miracle baby!!
