Dr. Michael Opsahl, United States
Dr. Opsahl graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in biology in 1974 and from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1978. After completing an obstetrics and gynecology internship, he served as a medical officer aboard the USS Nassau LHA-4. Following sea duty, he completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. He then served for two years as an obstetrician-gynecologist at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan.
After completing fellowship training in reproductive endocrinology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health in 1987, Dr. Opsahl spent the remainder of his naval career as Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at NNMC in Bethesda, Maryland. During his time at NNMC Bethesda, he was Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
Dr. Opsahl retired from the Navy in 1994 and practiced for 10 years at the Genetics & IVF Institute (GIVF) in Fairfax, Virginia, before moving to the Pacific Northwest. In 2004, he cofounded Northwest Center for Reproductive Sciences (NCRS), where he remained until it was acquired by Seattle Reproductive Medicine (SRM) in January 2011. Dr. Opsahl left SRM in 2013 to found POMA Fertility.
Dr. Opsahl is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, and the Pacific Coast Fertility Society. He has written more than 25 scientific papers and served as an ad hoc reviewer for the medical journals Fertility and Sterility and Obstetrics & Gynecology.
With 44 years of experience as a women’s health and infertility specialist, he has extensive experience in all aspects of assisted reproduction. Dr. Opsahl emphasizes patient education to support informed consent. He supports family building for everyone, including the LGBTQIA+ community, women and men seeking fertility preservation, and families seeking sex selection for family balancing.
Dr. Opsahl has been married for 40 years and has twin sons, one a journalist and the other a graphic artist. He has one dog and two cats and supports his wife’s work with animal rescue organizations. He is an avid golfer, meaning his enthusiasm exceeds his skill level.
