Christina N.C. Mitchell, M.D., is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) and reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). She earned her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan, then completed her OB/GYN residency and REI fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. 

Before joining SGF, Dr. Mitchell served as Medical Director of Fertility Preservation and IVF Director at UNC Fertility. Passionate about educating future REI leaders, she previously served as Director of Academic Affairs at RADfertility and Director of REI Education for the ChristianaCare OB/GYN Residency Program. Committed to evidence-based medicine, she has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and presented her research at local and national conferences. Dr. Mitchell practices all aspects of fertility care, with a particular interest in fertility preservation and optimizing IVF outcomes. She is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). 

Dr. Mitchell provides patient care at SGF's Raleigh, North Carolina location. Her goal is to help families navigate infertility in a comfortable, supported, and well-informed way. She is a devoted wife and mother, an avid runner, a novice gardener, and an aspiring golfer.

In ten years of infertility treatment, I saw many reproductive endocrinologists, but Shady Grove Fertility surpassed them all. After too many failed IVF cycles and miscarriages, I came here. Their team, led by Dr. Mersereau, was the first to tailor treatment specifically to me, with results unlike anything I had experienced. I had honestly lost all hope, especially at my age, but the confidence they gave me was more than a change in attitude. My positive experience was not only about the remarkable results. The entire staff is unmatched, the environment is warm and reassuring, my care team is always available, and their honesty may be what I admire most. I highly recommend this clinic!

I do not understand any rating below five stars. Fertility problems are stressful, but the doctors and staff make the process as easy and comfortable as possible. They treat you as a whole person, not a number. They are candid and transparent about costs and help identify payment options if insurance does not cover something. Treatment is not cheap, and fertility insurance is not comprehensive in this country, but there have been no surprise charges. They itemize every cost and assign a financial contact who is only a phone call away. They are patient even with people like me who ask many questions. They handle the hard work and keep you informed. During this stressful period, I appreciate how much easier they have made our lives. Treatment is ongoing, but I have no doubt they will do everything possible to help us.

I wish I could give more than five stars. Every staff member at SGF Raleigh/Cary was wonderful, and my experience far exceeded expectations. I never waited long, they gladly scheduled early bloodwork so it did not disrupt my job, and everyone was kind. Dr. Mersereau is compassionate, kind, and an excellent doctor. Alli Tupper, the primary nurse coordinating my egg-freezing schedule and medications, was clear, responsive, and consistently reassuring. Their patient education modules answered all my questions before I took any medication. I recommend them to everyone considering egg freezing or fertility treatment. I cannot adequately express my gratitude to the SGF team.

My wife and I had an excellent experience at Shady Grove. Dr. Mitchell, Ellie PA, Jackie, and every staff member were warm, welcoming, and skilled. The nurses and staff responded promptly through the portal and never made us feel that our questions were a bother. Blood draws were always easy, and every appointment was quick and efficient. Thanks to Shady Grove, we became pregnant quickly, and the entire process was much easier than I expected.

They either do not understand insurance or tell you and your partner that you are in network when they are not. You then spend months calling their billing team to resolve the issue, but they never return your calls and send your account to collections. The clinical staff are fine, but the billing staff do not belong in healthcare.

Do not agree to genetic testing through SGF. They use only Natera, which is notorious for outrageous prices. Read online reviews and consider other transparent genetic testing options that cost $250 or less. Natera billed my insurance company $8,000 and then told me I still owed $1,300, not including what they planned to bill my wife. Even if you agree to Natera testing, you must then attend counseling. Although my wife's report identified no carrier status and mine identified only 2, meaning the risk to our child was nearly 0%, they still required follow-up counseling through GeneScreen. This was clearly unnecessary and cost hundreds more. These tests and consultations are handled by third parties, so choose a more transparent genetic testing and counseling provider to save money and time. The doctor was kind, but everything else was deeply disappointing. They ordered blood tests for my wife for sexually transmitted infections and immunity to various diseases, but forgot measles and required her to return to Labcorp, pay again, and have another unnecessary blood draw. She had already tested immune to every other disease, including rubella, so the MMR vaccine had clearly worked, including for measles. They initially told me I could have blood drawn for STI testing at the clinic to avoid another Labcorp visit. They forgot when I went for genetic screening and now require another Labcorp visit for STI testing, even though my wife tested negative for everything during our 15-year monogamous marriage. They will say this is “standard protocol,” and it may be—but specifically for them. We contacted several other fertility clinics and friends who had undergone IVF, and they were shocked by SGF's requirements. SGF cannot personalize treatment beyond its listed protocol; it feels like receiving care from a human resources department rather than an actual doctor. We underwent several tests and treatments here—two ultrasounds, semen analysis, genetic testing, prenatal bloodwork, consultations, and more—spent thousands of dollars, and waited seven weeks for any help. Yet they still refused to prescribe medication, let alone attempt an IUI or similar treatment that might actually help, solely because of the unreasonable requirements listed above.

I rarely write reviews, especially negative ones, but the problems with SGF's billing department compelled me to do so. They gave me incorrect information about my insurance benefits and did not disclose my out-of-pocket costs in advance; SGF told me everything would be fully reimbursed. To reach billing, you have to call their corporate office, which is a major headache and reflects the problems with our profit-driven healthcare system. We had a wonderful experience with PA Ellie, but the doctor lacked the warmth and compassion we expected throughout this journey. We went to Carolina Conception and had a completely different, positive experience. It was incredibly refreshing during what can be a very stressful journey.

My experience with Shady Grove has been difficult so far. They only want to communicate through the portal, although sometimes a phone call for information, questions, or clarification would be easier and more personal. Whenever I request a call back through the portal, I receive no response. The nurses' portal messages are always brief and impersonal. I constantly feel like a burden. This process is already difficult, and you need support. I hope things improve. At times, the experience has been so poor that I have not wanted to continue with them, but this is one of the few places my insurance accepts. The front desk staff are very friendly. My assigned doctor is wonderful, and the financial counselor is also excellent.

After moving to North Carolina, I came across Shady Grove Fertility. I had previously received unsuccessful treatment at two other fertility clinics, and I am so glad I found SGF. Here, I received an extremely thorough fertility evaluation and a personalized treatment plan, and I always felt heard by my care team. I was fortunate to build a family, but I firmly believe it would not have happened without the professional support of the SGF team.

I completed two egg-freezing cycles at Shady Grove and cannot say enough about the attentive care I received from beginning to end. Both experiences went smoothly, and every team member was incredibly supportive. From my first consultation, I felt genuinely welcomed and cared for. Dr. Mersereau and all the clinical and administrative staff consistently showed great professionalism, knowledge, and empathy. They patiently answered all my questions and always responded promptly, keeping me supported and informed at every step of my fertility journey. What impressed me most was the personalized approach. I never felt like just another patient; the team took my individual concerns seriously, listened carefully, and tailored the process to my needs and preferences. I was recovering from major knee surgery at the time, and the team was extremely supportive. Dr. Mersereau also took time to explain the differences between the two stimulation protocols used for my egg-freezing cycles, and I greatly appreciated her commitment to my success. Their patience, clear explanations, and calm reassurance truly transformed my experience. Egg freezing can be emotionally and physically challenging, but this team made it an empowering journey. I am deeply grateful to have been cared for by such a thoughtful, professional, and compassionate team. I wholeheartedly recommend this clinic to anyone considering fertility preservation. I can't rave enough about the level of care I received from Shady Grove. Everyone from the doctors, to the nursing staff, support staff, and technicians are so caring and kind. They truly care about what they do. Both negative and positive medical situations/results were handled with professionalism and care. I was always informed, communicated with, and heard when making every decision along the way. I highly recommend speaking with SGF if you're on a fertility journey.

I cannot praise Dr. Mersereau and the SGF Cary team enough. The entire team was caring and thoughtful throughout treatment. No matter how many questions I asked—and I asked many—they never made me feel bothersome. Every interaction felt personal; they listened and ensured I was comfortable and informed at every stage. Scheduling was convenient and visits were arranged quickly. You can tell they genuinely care and work hard to make the process smooth. I always felt like their only patient, which shows their dedication. Their after-hours line was also very reassuring. Knowing help was available outside normal hours mattered greatly. I am grateful to have found a clinic providing excellent medical care and genuine emotional support. I will always thank SGF Cary for helping me build my little family!

I have no idea how good they are because they never respond. I had an appointment but needed to reschedule. They said they did not know the schedule two weeks ahead, which was ridiculous, and promised to respond soon but never did. My repeated attempts to contact them went unanswered. I was later laid off and lost my insurance. Had they contacted me, I might have received the help I urgently needed.

From investigating recurrent miscarriage to our successful first IVF transfer and nearing the end of the first trimester, Shady Grove in Cary provided exceptional care. Working with Dr. Bressler and her team was wonderful. Dr. B always made me feel heard, which meant so much. Every question received a thoughtful, empathetic answer. All updates were communicated professionally, promptly, and considerately. Appointments ran on time and staff were always welcoming. My husband James and I began our fertility journey at Carolina Conceptions Fertility. There, we felt overlooked and unheard. My friend Jenna in Virginia had used Shady Grove Fertility and recommended it. She was 36 and due in November 2024. Shady Grove Fertility listened, helped us, and guided us toward what we had thought impossible—having our own child. The receptionists, lab technicians, my favorite technician Whitney, our nurse Stephanie—who even answered our call while attending a concert after work—and our doctor, Dr. Bressler, were talkative and personable. The environment was not frightening; it felt like home and we felt well cared for. I cannot say enough good things about Shady Grove. I am 43 and have struggled with infertility since my 20s. My ex-husband and I were never able to conceive, but I could not give up my dream of becoming a mother. At my OB-GYN's recommendation, I went to Shady Grove to see whether egg retrieval was still possible at my age. I met Dr. Mitchell, who was candid about the statistics but still felt it was worth trying. Expectations were not high because of my age, but I needed to know I had done everything possible. Once stimulation began, my body started responding within a day and continued for several days. Worried something might be wrong, I contacted the clinic. They scheduled an ultrasound. The nurse explained that it sounded as though many follicles were responding well to the hormones, and the ultrasound confirmed this. A few days later, I underwent egg retrieval. Given my medical history and uncertainty about my fertility, I was extremely nervous. The care team reassured me and patiently explained every step, easing my anxiety. When I woke up, I was told they had retrieved 31 eggs. The next day, I learned that 23 were mature and had been successfully frozen. I never imagined my retrieval would be so successful. I am deeply grateful to Shady Grove and highly recommend Dr. Mitchell, nurse Kim, and the entire care team.

My husband and I were very nervous at first and did not know what to expect, but Dr. Bressler and everyone at SGF helped us tremendously throughout the process. It has been almost a year since my first embryo transfer, and I have been meaning to write this review. Now, nearly a year later, our sweet daughter was born this March, and we could not be more grateful to the SGF team in Cary, North Carolina! We would not be where we are today without them. Every visit was filled with warmth and care. The physician assistants and nurses were wonderful. I especially looked forward to their “You’ve got this, baby” hugs before my morning appointments. My husband and I were also very happy with Dr. Mitchell. Throughout our fertility journey, she was consistently knowledgeable, supportive, and caring. Thank you, Dr. Mitchell! Infertility is incredibly painful, and after a miscarriage following an IUI cycle in late 2025, those small gestures of care meant so much to us. The team was also extremely responsive. Our questions were usually answered right away, whether by phone or through the online portal, which was tremendously reassuring during such a stressful time. Our experience with Shady Grove Fertility was terrible. Not only were the IVF results incredibly disappointing, but the clinic's administrative and billing departments were even worse. The poor clinical outcome was hard enough, and SGF's repeated failures only made things worse. They completely mishandled our bill, submitting it to Carrot even though they knew Carrot does not accept direct claims from clinics, incorrectly verifying our insurance even though we were covered by one of their partner insurers, and giving us all kinds of incorrect information throughout the process. Even worse, SGF completely shields its billing department from patients. Once they make a serious financial error, you cannot reach anyone who can actually resolve it. Instead, you are forced to deal with so-called “financial counselors” who provide entirely inaccurate information, make promises they cannot keep, and continually pass the blame. If you want a clinic that takes responsibility, communicates clearly, and does not add enormous administrative stress to an already difficult treatment journey, look elsewhere. SGF's billing is an absolute nightmare.

My experience at this clinic was very disappointing, and I ultimately decided to transfer my care because I lost confidence in the level of communication and oversight during treatment. While at the clinic, I encountered many issues that made the entire process feel extremely stressful and disorganized. Before an intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycle, I received conflicting instructions about medication doses, including progesterone. Although I had discussed this with the doctor beforehand, I left feeling that my concerns had not been taken seriously enough. There were also administrative and laboratory errors that caused unnecessary stress. On one occasion, my blood sample was mislabeled, and I was asked to pay out of pocket to repeat the test at an outside laboratory, without any clear explanation of why I should bear the additional cost. Another upsetting incident occurred before an IUI procedure, when a staff member incorrectly said that two vials of sperm had been thawed instead of one. Because we had a limited number of vials available, this caused considerable panic until they later explained that it was a labeling error. When I raised concerns about scheduling an intrauterine insemination (IUI) over a holiday weekend and whether doing it earlier might improve the chance of success, I felt ignored. Instead of feeling supported, I felt as though my questions were a nuisance. Overall, I personally experienced poor communication, repeated errors, and a lack of attention to detail, all of which made an already emotionally difficult process even harder. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this clinic.

We had an excellent experience at Shady Grove Fertility. From the beginning, the team took the time to thoroughly evaluate the factors affecting my ability to become pregnant and ultimately diagnosed me with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). They explained everything clearly, provided detailed information about our treatment options, and created a step-by-step plan that made the entire process feel less overwhelming. I especially appreciated their transparency about costs. At each stage, they kept us informed about what to expect financially, which gave us peace of mind throughout the process. Most importantly, their attentive care and expertise helped me complete a successful cycle, and I am thrilled to share that I am now pregnant. They went above and beyond for me, and although this whole process could have felt extremely overwhelming, it really didn’t!! The best fertility clinic in the Triangle. I recently transferred to Shady Grove Fertility and wish I had come here sooner. From my first appointment, I could tell that everything here was completely different. The calm, organized atmosphere and genuine care immediately put me at ease during this emotional and stressful journey. I always felt heard and never rushed, and everything was explained clearly, making even the most overwhelming parts feel manageable. My doctor, Dr. Mitchell, is wonderful—kind, calm, dependable, and incredibly reassuring. She takes the time to explain everything clearly and makes me feel like a person, not just a patient. The other doctors I met were also exceptional—professional, attentive, and compassionate. Every interaction felt thoughtful and reassuring, which made a crucial difference throughout the process. Nurse Meredith is especially amazing—warm, responsive, and tremendously supportive. She always replies quickly and has a way of making anxiety-provoking updates feel calm and easy to understand. The entire nursing team is consistently kind, efficient, and compassionate. I also want to recognize physician assistant Ellie Andres, who was outstanding—kind, patient, and supportive at every step. The anesthesia team was equally excellent and made me feel safe, comfortable, and well cared for throughout the procedure. The sonographers and phlebotomy staff also deserve special praise. They were all very gentle, friendly, and reassuring. Their warmth, patience, and professionalism made the ultrasounds and blood draws much easier than I expected. The embryologists were wonderful as well—professional, meticulous, and reassuring. The front desk and billing teams were also a pleasure to work with—friendly, helpful, responsive, and efficient, making all the complicated paperwork much easier. This creates a relaxed atmosphere that helps my wife feel more at ease during some very stressful treatments. Overall, Shady Grove provides far better care and service than our previous clinic and makes the experience much more comfortable and pleasant.

We are extremely grateful that we found Shady Grove Fertility for our infertility treatment. Not only was the staff extremely knowledgeable, but they felt like real partners in this journey through their kindness, patience, and understanding. Our assigned nurse was highly available and was able to get answers to questions within the same day. All treatment is self-contained; they perform both low and high tech fertility care in one place. Our plan of care was individualized, not a standard treatment, and the clinic was willing to try different protocols when one protocol didn't work for us. The office staff and clinical staff were always friendly and warm; we could always count on them for a kind word (and sometimes a hug!) This was a very long and physically and emotionally exhausting process for me and my husband. Dr. Mitchell refused to give up until all our options were exhausted, which we did not see at other clinics we tried before Shady Grove. Highest recommendation possible.

I am a mother today entirely because of Dr. Christina Mitchell and her invaluable team. The in vitro fertilization (IVF) journey takes an emotional, mental, and physical toll on patients and their partners. During such an uncertain time, the most important decision is finding the best reproductive endocrinologist to serve as your advocate, teammate, and guide. After repeated failures at a “top New York IVF clinic,” we were referred to Dr. Mitchell. Without question, we would not have our child today without her. Dr. Mitchell is first and foremost an exceptionally sharp physician, but when that intelligence is combined with warmth, kindness, and an approachable manner, fertility magic happens. We are now 12 weeks pregnant after our first IVF cycle! Thank you to Dr. Mitchell, PA Ellie, and nurse Meredith for their tremendous support. My partner and I had tried to conceive naturally for a year without success. Given that I was 39, I became increasingly anxious, so we went to Shady Grove. Before trying the shared-risk IVF program, we completed three unsuccessful IUI cycles. I like to learn as much as possible and conduct my own research, with all its benefits and drawbacks. Every time I researched or compared treatments, read, or spoke with other women trying to conceive, I found that my treatment was effective and supported by current research. And then it worked! We are doing our best to enjoy the pregnancy and look forward to meeting our little one. Thank you again to Dr. Mitchell and her team!
