Dr. Joseph G. Whelan joined Charlotte Reproductive Endocrinology Associates in 2004 after moving from Virginia to the Charlotte area. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. On his path to becoming a fertility physician, Dr. Whelan attended the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington, Kentucky, where he earned his medical degree. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, and his fellowship in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Whelan has delivered or authored more than 15 presentations and publications and has more than 20 years of experience as an infertility specialist. He currently serves as Practice Director of Assisted Reproductive Technology at Reach Fertility.

My husband and I have no complaints about the staff or doctors at REACH Ballantyne. Everyone was kind and helpful throughout IVF. We are very grateful that our first cycle succeeded. Mackenzie, the phlebotomists, receptionists, front desk staff, and everyone else were welcoming. Dr. Seth was also very informative and educated us throughout the process. 10/10—we will return if we decide to add to our family!

If you are looking for compassionate staff and providers who give you the information you need, keep you updated about procedures, are kind, and make you feel welcome, do not come here. The “Dr. Holtz” team is terrible! Everything I knew about my retrieval procedure came from TikTok. The “app” is a joke and scattered everywhere, so you cannot even review the fragments of information they provide. They want your money but care little about you or your goal of having a child. Waits are long, and the procedure—not IUI—takes under two minutes. They come in and tell you to undress, then handle the speculum so roughly and carelessly that you would think they were stuffing a turkey. Throughout the process, “Dr.” Holt interacted with my husband and me twice. I assume she had other patients she considered more deserving of attention. I wonder about her success rate with POC patients. I blame myself for not researching before choosing this chop shop, but now I know better. The front desk secretary is the only humane and kind person there. Run from this place and find somewhere that values you and cares about your goals. Look at the people leaving positive reviews—they all look alike. I would rather you tell me you do not want people like me there than treat me poorly!

I ended their services more than fifteen years ago. The military sent me around the world. After I retired and bought a house, they suddenly sent a debt collector who repeatedly mailed me bills, magically beginning when I bought the house. I spoke with them by phone and confirmed that I had canceled the debt in 2008 and owed nothing. Then the debt collector's letters started again. Get your records in order. I would give fewer stars if I could.

I would give this place fewer stars if I could. No one cares; everything is about money. Please go somewhere more competent and reliable. We paid all charges for treatment in October, but it is now January and they are still adding charges to our account. When we asked to speak with someone, everyone gave a different answer. We asked the manager, Melinda, to call us two weeks ago, and she still has not responded. The medical team was not good either. They seemed to hate their jobs and did the bare minimum. They mishandled the date of our IUI, forcing us to use a natural cycle because of their incompetence. I beg you to go elsewhere, where staff care about your treatment and are knowledgeable. Give your money to a fertility clinic that actually helps people instead of one interested only in collecting checks.

Taylor Holt and her team cared for me, and I am very grateful for a practitioner who listened and made me feel validated when I advocated for certain things. We "tried" a few things and discovered something that was likely preventing us from achieving a successful pregnancy. We became pregnant the next cycle and just graduated from REACH. Taylor has my highest recommendation. Thank you for everything!

I cannot say enough good things about REACH! They helped us have our rainbow baby, and we will return in the future. We love our team, Ann Morris and nurse Jamie!!! We will truly miss them through the rest of the pregnancy. When you graduate, they give you a package with a baby hat and onesie 🥲. We will always be grateful ❤️

I researched many clinics and chose REACH because of its high ratings, but things have changed over the past year. Genetic screening showed that I tested positive for two traits. REACH had me schedule a call with their company rather than my doctor, which I found strange. They also told me all the information was written down, so I already knew it. I am not a doctor, so I researched it online myself. They offered no guidance and only care about making money. I am very disappointed. My OB-GYN was the one who sat down with me to discuss my test results.

I have only praise for REACH, and I am a highly detail-oriented Type A person. From the beginning, their team showed exceptional thoroughness, thoughtfulness, and genuine care. Before embryo transfer, they performed additional testing and found endometriosis, allowing us to treat it beforehand. I am very grateful for their thorough and proactive approach. It gave me confidence that we were doing everything possible to give me the best chance of success. Our first transfer succeeded! The journey was not easy, but REACH made an extraordinary difference. Because of them, I can now hold my precious son and cannot imagine life without him. My husband and I will always be grateful to REACH for giving us our family. Dr. Wing, now retired, was our physician, and we wish him a very happy retirement.

I had my egg retrieval this morning, and the medical staff were wonderful. I arrived in severe pain from cramping, and every nurse took time to make sure I was comfortable. They went above and beyond and truly made me feel seen and cared for! 🫶🏻

I would give negative stars if I could. This was the worst treatment. I had to pay every time I went in, and my test results were not completed promptly. When I contacted them, I was told my case was under review. Melinda, I am still waiting for you to contact me. Sadly, this place does not care about people's feelings. Treating people this way is shameful.

Dr. Katz and his team truly care about patients' well-being. The nurses who helped us were kind, helpful, and thoughtful. I am so grateful to REACH Fertility for making my dream come true. After a long and emotional journey, I am finally pregnant—and I have just graduated from the clinic with a strong heartbeat and a healthy baby! From our first visit, the entire team treated us with compassion, patience, and true professionalism. Dr. Crain, Ann Merline, every physician assistant, including the wonderful Taylor, the nurses and phlebotomists—special thanks to Jamie, Capri, Brylea, and Hailey—and all the staff, especially Stephanie Graham, went above and beyond to make sure I felt cared for, informed, and supported throughout the process, from egg retrieval and transfer to follow-up. The embryology lab is second to none, and the embryologists are masters of their craft, highly skilled and passionate about the latest developments. Devi is truly an angel. I hardly know where to begin. I just had an HSG here, and this facility truly deserves its 3.1 Google rating. The service was terrible. After the HSG, while urine was dripping onto the bed, they did not even provide tissues or paper towels; you had to figure it out yourself. Fortunately, this was not new to me, so I knew what to do. If this is your first HSG, go somewhere that will not traumatize you. The “care” described in their services and tests is something they choose not to provide.

September will mark my ninth year working at Reach Fertility. I work in billing, providing follow-up after patients complete services, helping obtain financial authorization for treatment cycles and related procedures, sending account statements, and more. I love working here and helping patients "build families" in my own way. I went through this myself many years ago, before technology was as advanced as it is today at Reach Fertility. Since graduating from Reach Fertility, I have seen many successful pregnancies and patients joyfully move on to their obstetricians. As a billing specialist, I often encounter patients who do not understand their bills because they are unfamiliar with fertility insurance benefits, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and other billing terms, or do not fully understand which services are included within or outside their fertility cycle. Unfortunately, misunderstandings sometimes lead to negative reviews. Understanding your fertility insurance benefits is vital on the journey to build your family. I visited several fertility clinics looking for one willing to invest the time and effort to help my fiancé and me through this difficult process. I especially want to thank the front desk and insurance teams. Tasha at the front desk is a joy. She often knows patients by name, warmly greets me every time, makes sure I am comfortable on procedure days, and helps me understand what is happening. If she does not know an answer, she calls whoever is needed until we figure it out. To be honest, the billing team can sometimes be hard to reach, and the clinical side can make you feel like just another patient. But the insurance team and the women you meet face-to-face are a gift; they always restore a sense of humanity and compassion. They make an overwhelming process more manageable, and I am truly grateful. My journey is not over yet, but I look forward to the outcome.

After our first retrieval and transfer, Reach helped us welcome our beautiful four-week-old daughter. The nurses were patient and friendly, answering our countless questions along the way. Dr. Katz was very knowledgeable and chose the best approach for our situation, helping us have our daughter quickly while also freezing 8 additional embryos!

I am incredibly grateful for the outstanding REACH team. Since 2018, I have been fortunate to have Dr. Katz and his dedicated team beside me at every step. Although the journey was not smooth, I always felt supported and knew I had a team to rely on through good and bad news. Dr. Katz made me feel like an active partner in my treatment plan, and his nurses always answered my questions patiently and treated me with care and understanding. Thank you, Reach Fertility, for a wonderful experience! Ours is a nontraditional pregnancy, and we are using a surrogate to welcome our son. Over the past six months, our intended parents and surrogate have had an excellent experience working with Reach. We sent our embryos to the clinic without any problems. Communication was consistently smooth, and messages or document requests through the portal were always answered quickly. Both Dr. Katz and Dr. Downs worked with us. Their medical staff were pleasant, and the nurses were always thoughtful. We highly recommend Reach!

I used to be very skeptical of REACH. I thought it was like a “factory” and did not provide personalized care like other fertility specialty clinics—but I was wrong!! Dr. Wing is very knowledgeable, and EMILY, RN, is extremely compassionate and always responds quickly to questions or concerns! Kelly, RN, is very patient and kind and does an excellent job with medication management. I would absolutely recommend this practice!

Reach Fertility gave my wife and me hope of becoming first-time mothers! My wife had previously been told she would never be able to conceive. We were discouraged until we came here and received a second opinion. They reassured us and provided the care my wife needed. After testing and medication, we decided to proceed with in vitro fertilization (IVF). We completed treatment and stayed optimistic. After 14 days, bloodwork brought the wonderful news that my wife was pregnant! We are so excited and cannot wait for our baby to arrive!!! Thank you, Reach team!

My personal experience at REACH was excellent. We retrieved 43 eggs, which was incredible, and Dr. Whelan was my doctor. I visited all the locations, and everyone was friendly and caring. I know many people have had billing issues, but we never did. Our first transfer failed, but the second succeeded. I would definitely see Dr. Whelan again.

Reach was amazing! They were extremely helpful throughout the IVF process. Whenever I had questions, they were always available. It was very convenient to contact them through the portal, and they responded very quickly. Even on weekends, they immediately helped if I had an urgent issue. I worked with Dr. Downs at Reach Fertility, and she and her team were wonderful. My nurse Gillian responded very promptly whenever I had questions, making the process much smoother. Much of the education and most communication with doctors and nurses occurred through their online portal. This requires some self-study, but the support team is available whenever needed. At age 40, I completed my first and only IVF cycle at Reach, and it was very successful. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Downs and her team for their attentive care and guidance.

IVF is certainly not a pleasant experience, but before the recent birth of our daughter, our experience at REACH was excellent. The nursing team in particular was always helpful and attentive, quickly answering all my questions by phone or through the patient portal. Grace-Perez was wonderful, kept us updated, and often resolved our concerns. I recommend REACH to anyone exploring fertility options.

I wish I could give less than one star. 1. Be prepared: the people at this clinic do not actually review your chart before seeing you. Every time I went in, they asked whether I had done IVF or IUI. I had done neither; why could they not take two seconds to check before entering the room? 2. They scheduled my Friday appointment at the wrong office—my final appointment with them. When I arrived at the office I always used, they told me I was wrong and asked whether I could adjust my work schedule. No. My job pays me, and I then pay you. I had already taken an hour off to come to my usual office, but you scheduled me incorrectly. Something felt wrong, and I wanted to see a doctor that day. You would think a fertility clinic would understand that many patients have experienced difficult events, but their response was terrible and arrogant. I then saw a doctor—and, by the way, you see someone different at every appointment—who slapped an ultrasound photo on the table and said, “You’re pregnant! Stop looking for trouble!” Wow. A doctor had never spoken to me that way. Again, you work at a fertility clinic where women have experienced problems. We are not looking for trouble; we are responding to past experience. He then made me feel bad for asking about symptoms and as though I should apologize. The nurse looked at me and said she would schedule a one-week follow-up. No, she would not. They can find someone else willing to tolerate being spoken to this way, but it will not be me.

IVF is a long and difficult process. Taylor Holt and her team at REACH kept us informed, answered all of our questions and made the process as smooth as possible. The portal made it very easy to communicate, and the team was always very quick to respond. We welcomed our daughter in November. We are so thankful for REACH and the services they provide.

From start to finish, our experience at Reach was flawless, and every staff member we met made us feel welcome. From the women at reception and every nurse we encountered to the phlebotomy team, the staff who answered our countless emails, and our dedicated doctor, everyone provided exceptional care, a positive atmosphere, and plenty of laughter. The fertility journey is long and complex, requiring significant effort and extensive paperwork, and everyone at Reach was extremely helpful, informative, and supportive throughout. Reach was my second fertility clinic. I left the first because of poor communication and a lack of care. At my first Reach appointment, I met Grace Perez, and that meeting convinced me I had found the right place. I am now pregnant with our first child through IVF. I am very grateful to the Reach team. They always answer my questions promptly and call at every stage to explain the process in detail. I could not have reached this point without them. Hello, I would like to express my disappointment with the receptionist’s behavior during my appointment today, May 29, at 9:00 a.m. We arrived about 15 minutes early. I visit Reach Fertility frequently, almost every week, and have always had a positive impression of the staff. However, this receptionist was rude and unfriendly from the start. She also said only one guest was allowed in the reception area, which surprised me because I have attended many appointments with my father, mother, and husband and had never encountered or been told of this rule. Today I brought my aunt and cousin, who were visiting from abroad and wanted to accompany me. My father also came but ultimately had to leave. This upset me because he is my father and accompanies me to almost every appointment. None of them intended to enter the exam room; they only wanted to sit with me in reception. I was only there for a simple blood test, so the appointment was brief. There were many empty seats in the waiting room, and the clinic was not crowded. If reception had been full, I would have understood and asked them to wait elsewhere. Unfortunately, the receptionist asked them to leave in a very unpleasant manner, making us extremely uncomfortable. Worse, she kept staring at us while we sat there, which made the atmosphere even more uncomfortable and unwelcoming. I am also a receptionist, and I would never ask a patient’s family or guests to leave this way. I understand that clinics may have policies, but courtesy and professionalism still matter. This was the first time I had seen her at the front desk, and I sincerely believe she should speak to patients and their families more politely and respectfully. I simply wanted to share this feedback because I genuinely enjoy visiting Reach Fertility and have never experienced this kind of treatment before. Other than this, every appointment has been pleasant, and I have been happy with the other receptionists. Dr. Ann Morris has also been wonderful at every visit. Thank you.

From our initial surrogacy journey to attempting adoption, experiencing heartbreak, and ultimately returning to surrogacy, she was always by our side. Gemisha is the GOAT at drawing blood. I have the worst luck with bloodwork anywhere else—small rolling veins, anxiety, and fainting—but she never misses. During our IVF stimulation, she saved me every other day. Everyone was very caring, from Amy at the front desk and nurse Emily to Molly during ultrasounds. Thank you so much, Langtree team!

Update: Our son is now 7 months old, and we are overjoyed. I visited both Reach locations and was pleased with each. I came in with realistic expectations because I also work in medicine as a nurse practitioner. I knew my chances of success depended as much, if not more, on following instructions and caring for myself as on the team's timing, medication choices, and follow-up. In fertility care, women may underestimate their role in maintaining a healthy weight, nutrition, self-care, and reducing fertility-disrupting stress. That said, many variables are beyond both the medical team's and the patient's control, including genetics and blood disorders. I became pregnant after two IUIs. I am one of the lucky ones. I hope this pregnancy results in a healthy baby, and I appreciate REACH's role in our journey.

My husband and I came to REACH not for fertility treatments, but actually for the beginning of a journey of discovery/diagnosis for us both. I have a uterine anomaly that I learned I had when I was a teenager, not knowing if I could conceive, or if I would need fertility intervention in order to conceive. I knew when it came time to wanting to prepare for having children, I wanted to know what my options were on the forefront and how to best prepare myself and my body for it, not knowing if eventually I would need fertility treatments. The team at REACH at the Langtree location was our home base and the team could not have been more accommodating and supportive. Over the course of a year and a half, they performed a few procedures to get the most accurate diagnosis for me and my condition so that we could better come up with a game plan for trying to conceive. As well as for my husband. By the time we both did bloodwork to check our hormone levels, and sperm count for my husband, we got the green light to try naturally for 6 months before returning if need be, and miraculously, we conceived naturally in the first month! As I’m writing this, I’m currently in my 9th month of pregnancy about to welcome our little boy to the world, and could not be more grateful for the support of REACH through our journey to parenthood! They have also been wonderful keeping in touch with me throughout the pregnancy even though we have graduated from their care! They were also instrumental in setting me up with Maternal/Fetal Medicine through Novant to oversee my ultrasounds and high-risk prenatal care once I graduated!

I cannot say enough good things about Reach Langtree! From my first virtual appointment with Molly, I knew I was in the right place. Every in-person appointment made me increasingly confident in my decision and the infertility treatment process. The staff felt like family throughout treatment. Everyone at the clinic made an extremely difficult process a little easier. Communication was excellent, and all details about bloodwork, ultrasound, medication, treatment timing, and appointments appeared in my portal within an hour of each appointment. I cannot praise the process and team enough. Molly, Emily, Alexis, Gemisha, and Amy—you are all wonderful, and it was a pleasure working with you!

I cannot say enough good things about REACH Langtree. Most importantly, they helped us have our son! At our first meeting, I happened to be at the ideal point in my cycle, so we went straight to bloodwork and began the process. I completed two rounds of intrauterine insemination (IUI), with the first resulting in a chemical pregnancy. I completed all the testing they recommended and am very glad we did. Every experience was positive, and we cannot wait to return when trying for our second child!

I recommend Reach to anyone struggling with fertility or seeking answers. My husband and I tried for 2 years, and as an AMA member, finding answers about building our family mattered greatly. I was very satisfied with Reach and fortunate to work with Molly and her excellent team—Emily, Gemisha, and Amy. Communication was prompt and clear, and I felt prioritized. They compassionately evaluated both of us thoroughly and created an individualized plan. Through IUI, we welcomed our daughter in January—the greatest gift! Other reviews mention billing communication and occasional phone issues, but keeping payment confirmation numbers helped resolve billing concerns. Overall, 10/10!

From the beginning stages of our journey to the very end I was impressed with the staff at the Langtree facility of REACH. My husband and I went into the IVF process totally clueless but Molly was so patient and answered every question we had. The staff at the office were so kind and understanding of the mix of hope/doubt that you constantly live with during an infertility journey. I was a teacher while going through the process and everyone tried their best to help me get to school as soon as possible or wait until afterschool for any visits. Nurse Emily was such a supportive resource for me and I felt like she was on this emotional journey with me, beside me, feeling what I felt. The Langtree team and the uptown team did such an outstanding job that I got pregnant with the FIRST round of IVF. We welcomed our happy and healthy little girl in October. I wouldn't have been able to be a mom without Molly and her team at REACH.

I attended this clinic for a year and took Clomid throughout that time, but I still did not ovulate, and my uterine lining became thinner. I decided to seek an opinion at another clinic, where they told me she should not have prescribed Clomid and that I should take letrozole instead. I became pregnant in the first month! This clinic only cares about making money and does not seriously investigate why you are not conceiving. You will notice that appointments are rushed and that they strongly recommend IUI or IVF. They told me that IVF was the only way to rule out other possible issues. Well, I am pregnant now, but not because of this clinic.

My husband and I began our journey to parenthood at REACH in 2024. We initially underwent intrauterine insemination (IUI) with Molly Oaten's team, then moved to physician assistant (PA) Taylor Holt's team for our IVF egg retrieval. Every team we worked with was wonderful and went above and beyond to help us understand everything. Communication was also excellent, and the patient portal was incredibly helpful for managing appointments, messages, and medications. I cannot imagine managing without it, haha. Thanks to REACH, we are now pregnant and thrilled to be expecting our baby. I would recommend REACH to anyone looking for a fertility specialist.

I know that giving a place a perfect rating can make you question the reviewer, but honestly, REACH has been outstanding since our first visit. There are many negative reviews, so I felt I should thank them by posting this one. I was assigned to Dr. Whelan at the Charlotte office, and I am glad I was. Having recently been diagnosed with PCOS, I was advised to schedule at least one appointment to discuss what it meant for my fertility plans. Dr. Whelan was very knowledgeable about my condition and provided more information than my obstetrician and even more than I found through Google. After blood tests and an analysis for my husband, they recommended that, based on our unique circumstances, we skip ovulation-induction medication and IUI and proceed with IVF. So far, everyone has been very kind and helpful. Veronica is the nurse I have stayed in contact with throughout my visits, and she is always happy to provide results when available. I truly appreciate that before you first meet a nurse or doctor, they have you meet with a financial counselor to provide insight into the costs you may face if you proceed with treatment. I have visited several times so far and have not encountered the billing issues repeatedly mentioned in reviews, so I am knocking on wood. I will update my review once we begin treatment if I feel it is necessary, but I look forward to continuing my relationship with this office and its staff.

My first visit with Dr. Whelan was excellent. He was very kind and answered all my [silly] questions! He did not rush me or talk down to me as some doctors do. All the staff were very friendly and professional. Honestly, this may have been the best experience I have ever had with a healthcare provider! If you are undecided about going to REACH, do not hesitate. Ask for Dr. Whelan because he is wonderful! Even if you see another doctor at this clinic, I am sure they are all excellent, and if you are uncertain, the outstanding staff alone are reason enough to choose this office. I love them!

He was more than 20 minutes late for our appointment. Once he joined the meeting, he never apologized for being late, did not introduce himself, and made many negative assumptions about me. I left the meeting feeling hopeless and even more heartbroken. I knew this was a doctor who, for some reason, did not want to work with me. Perhaps it was my skin color, or perhaps he was having a bad day; I am not sure. But I am certain I will never recommend him to anyone or become his patient. I may not matter to him, but I matter to myself.
