Dr. Joseph Pena, United States


Joseph Peña, MD, joined East Coast Fertility in 2004, which later became RMA of New York–Long Island. He earned his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine and completed his OB/GYN residency at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, the oldest hospital in the United States.


Dr. Peña then completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the renowned Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he remained as an assistant professor at the Center for Women's Reproductive Care. He currently serves as a clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Peña is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Suffolk County Obstetrics and Gynecology Society. In recent years, Dr. Peña has been named annually to the Castle Connolly Top Doctors™ and New York Super Doctors® lists.

    Dr. Pena and his staff are truly wonderful. They answered every question I asked. They helped with billing and with applying for a grant, which was a huge help because my insurance covered none of the IVF. Dr. Pena is kind but direct. He is honest and does not sugarcoat things, which I appreciate. Highly recommended! They helped me become pregnant after 2 years of unexplained infertility!

    I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Pena and the entire RMA team. From day one, they made us feel supported, informed, and genuinely cared for. Dr. Pena always took time to explain every option and answer my many questions. Whenever I sent an email full of questions, he personally called to follow up. The nurses and staff were equally incredible—kind, patient, and attentive. Jessie Castro, Melissa, Alexis, Karen, Jenny, and many others were friendly, welcoming faces I often saw or spoke with. We are so grateful for everyone's support, compassion, and encouragement along the way. The hospital team was equally reassuring and did everything possible to ease my anxiety during each procedure. Ayanna in finance was very patient and kind and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to confirm important information, which we greatly appreciated.     My husband and I had been trying to conceive for nearly two years. I have stage III endometriosis, and when we met Dr. Pena and his team, they were amazing. All the MAs, NPs, and coordinators were responsive, understanding, and patient. I never felt like a number, especially at his Patchogue office. Almost every staff member knew my name. When we began, he spent a full two hours discussing our plan of action. Everything went smoothly, and aside from waiting for the grant, our overall experience was excellent. My only concern was a nurse during egg retrieval who was not kind or understanding toward a patient with severe anxiety like mine. During an already anxious experience, I felt rushed and ashamed of how I felt. Overall, my husband and I became pregnant after one round of IVF. I believe everything depends on how you feel and advocating for the care you want.

    I came here only for a consultation and had an unpleasant experience. First, the staff had poor attitudes. Everyone looked unhappy and seemed unwilling to help. Dr. Pena did not have the best bedside manner. I went elsewhere and immediately felt much more comfortable. At a time like this, I would rather travel for better treatment and comfort. I also feel that many of these reviews are fake, because when I completed my consultation, there were far fewer reviews and they were not very good.

    From the beginning, Dr. Pena has been personable, professional, and always willing to answer any questions. During my experience, I even contacted him at night and/or on weekends, and he always replied as quickly as possible. His entire team is wonderful. I always felt respected, supported, and welcome.     I experienced infertility for nearly four years. Thanks to Dr. Pena and his staff, I was finally able to see a positive pregnancy test. Thank you for everything. The doctor and staff were also very efficient and thorough with everything. They always communicate with you and never leave you waiting for answers. I appreciate everyone in the office.     Dr. Pena and his team are amazing! Before starting treatment with Dr. Pena and RMA, my wife and I had a very poor experience with another fertility doctor on Long Island. We were initially apprehensive, but after our first meeting with Dr. Pena, we knew we had made the right decision. Dr. Pena and his team are organized, responsive, and attentive. Our fertility coordinator, Melissa, was excellent: she answered all our emails, never made us feel like a burden, and helped us complete every task and requirement on time. Our IVF nurse, Alexis, was exceptional and had some of the best bedside manner I have ever experienced, making every visit pleasant. Dr. Pena himself was wonderful—knowledgeable, friendly, and responsive. We emailed him directly several times, and he responded quickly and even made time to call us to discuss our concerns. Overall, we strongly recommend Dr. Pena and RMA to anyone hoping to build a family.

    It feels fitting to write this review at 12.5 weeks pregnant, exactly one year after my first consultation with Dr. Peña and RMA. My husband and I knew nothing about IVF. We initially saw Dr. Peña because I carry a genetic mutation and wanted to understand IVF and decide whether to try naturally as planned or pursue IVF. His initial consultation and testing were extremely thorough, and he identified additional issues my OB-GYN had missed or could not detect. His attention to detail helped us realize IVF might be our only option because time was limited. Over 8 months, I had 2 egg retrievals and 2 embryo transfers. His coordinator Melissa was very helpful throughout. His nursing team, especially Jess and Alexis, were wonderful. I always had many questions, and they patiently answered them or found the answers. At one point, I became frustrated by the waiting between IVF stages. I emailed Dr. Peña with my concerns. He called within 10 minutes and stayed on the phone until every question and concern was addressed. I had never experienced being able to speak with a doctor immediately without feeling rushed. Dr. Peña was always honest with us. He adjusted protocols as needed, explained how he thought my body was responding, and worked with us to make and follow a plan. I am now happily pregnant and look forward to someday sending him a photo of the baby he helped create.

Throughout treatment, I greatly appreciated the nursing and front desk staff's quick follow-up calls and emails. I liked the size and atmosphere of the Patchogue clinic. Another clinic I previously visited was large but felt impersonal. Although the process was difficult, the outcome made it all worthwhile.     Dr. Pena and his team made our IVF journey unexpectedly smooth and easy. The clinic is exceptionally organized, with easy scheduling, short waits, and prompt calls from nurses about results and next steps.     This is my first negative review. I feel compelled to expose the repeated negligence and gaslighting I experienced during my year of treatment at RMA. Everything began well. My coordinator, Melissa, communicated clearly. I met my doctor, Dr. Pena, only once before he recommended IVF. I do not remember my first impression of him in January 2025, but it was not negative. What I remember most was feeling overwhelmed that my reproductive options had suddenly become so limited. From March through August 2025, I underwent three egg retrievals at RMA and generally felt supported. Everything began to fall apart when we transitioned from retrievals to transfers. The first thing I noticed was a sharp decline in communication. During retrievals, the nurses reliably called after every monitoring appointment with instructions. While preparing for my first embryo transfer, they often forgot to call, rarely sent follow-up emails, and sometimes sent incorrect instructions. Communication deteriorated until my second transfer, when they emailed me to “start progesterone in oil and birth control.” Because this was my second transfer, I knew the correct instruction was progesterone in oil and an antibiotic. Taking birth control as directed would certainly have ruined my transfer. I emailed my coordinator, now Nicole, with my concerns, but she never responded. The next warning sign was a surprise $10,000 bill. Anyone who has undergone IVF through insurance knows the preauthorization process. Anything insurance will not cover must be prepaid, ensuring the clinic receives full payment and protecting patients from unexpected bills later. Before I began IVF, RMA billing coordinator Gleb assured me I would never receive a surprise bill from the clinic. I received one anyway, and Gleb simply explained, “This was a misunderstanding between you and your insurance company.” His earlier promise was apparently meaningless. How do I feel about my care from Dr. Pena? I remain conflicted. I interacted with him only a few times over the year. I felt he took a one-size-fits-all approach to infertility treatment. When my first retrieval produced disappointing results, I asked what else we could do. He brushed me off and made me feel foolish for asking. He was unwilling to try new medications and treated questions as an annoyance. He only wanted to end the call quickly. The final straw came in early 2026, when I received another surprise bill—this time for embryo freezing. I could not believe it. I had created two euploid embryos at RMA, but both transfers failed. Why was I being charged for storage when I had no embryos stored? I learned that one segmental embryo from my April 2025 retrieval had been stored for nearly a year without my knowledge. I was angry and confused. No one could explain why I had not been informed. For a month, I called RMA every week trying to reach a genetic counselor who could help me understand segmental mosaic embryos so I could make an informed decision about keeping or discarding it. I left messages and called several times each week, but no one ever answered. I left RMA at the end of 2025 and found a wonderful doctor who seems genuinely concerned about my condition. Remember the medications Dr. Pena dismissed without discussion? My new doctor brought them up before I could even ask. Looking back, I feel RMA simply gave up on me. I felt abandoned when I needed support most. I hope this review helps other hopeful parents avoid the same experience. I wish I had advocated for myself sooner.

    The IVF journey is challenging, but Dr. Peña truly puts patients at ease. Whenever I emailed him a detailed list of questions, he took time to call me personally—usually within a few days—to discuss every point thoroughly and address my concerns. His command of the latest medical literature was clear whenever I asked about different aspects of treatment. Dr. Peña is honest and sometimes very direct. His straightforward approach gave me a clear understanding of what to expect, without unrealistic hope or sugarcoating. Under his care, both my egg retrieval and frozen embryo transfer produced satisfactory results. RMA overall runs like a well-oiled machine: prompt calls with results, clear emails explaining next steps, and almost no unnecessary delays. I chose the RMA East Patchogue office, while access to RMA's other locations gave me flexibility for most laboratory testing. I am deeply grateful for the compassionate, professional care I received—it was essential to my journey.

    I love this facility. Staff members Kavita and Anastasia; front desk staff Audrey and Amira; the ultrasound technicians; and all the doctors are wonderful. The office is always beautiful and clean. My experience here has consistently been five-star and first-rate. I highly recommend this office in Lake Success and the Melville office.

    We are very grateful to Dr. Pena and the outstanding staff at the East Patchogue office. He was patient and willing to answer all our questions during the initial consultation. He explained the process and our plan in great detail. Whenever I was confused, I emailed him or the nurses and always received an effective response. I highly recommend Dr. Pena and his team!

    Dr. Pena and his entire team gave us tremendous support through one of the most difficult journeys of our lives. IVF is not easy emotionally, physically, or mentally, but from the beginning we felt fully informed, cared for, and genuinely supported. Dr. Pena patiently and thoroughly explained the available options, including approaches to embryo transfer. This helped us feel empowered and never pressured. He treats every patient with expertise and empathy, which is essential in something as personal as fertility care. We were equally impressed by how fully my husband was included throughout the process. Fertility care can often seem focused on only one partner, but Dr. Pena and his team ensured that both of us felt heard, valued, and respected as equal participants in the journey. The clinic staff also deserve special praise. They were kind, efficient, and responsive, with emails and phone calls answered quickly. This was tremendously reassuring during an already stressful time. Knowing we could reach someone and receive timely answers greatly reduced our anxiety. We are sincerely grateful for the attentive care we received and highly recommend Dr. Pena and his team to anyone facing fertility challenges. Their professionalism, compassion, and responsiveness set them apart.

    After reviewing Dr. Joseph Pena's profile and seeing many genuine success stories, I followed my instincts. I do not regret it. I am 37 and had waited 12 years for this blessing. I am finally pregnant. Dr. Joseph Pena and his staff are wonderful people. I am deeply grateful to all of them. Melissa Britz, IVF coordinator and nurse; Alexis Rogers and Jessica Castro, who always replied to my emails and answered all my questions; Ayanna Swaby in billing, who made my journey so easy, always stayed ahead of everything, and obtained every insurance authorization on time; and Rose, the medical assistant, who was always cheerful and made me feel like family.     If you are in your 40s, I would not recommend this doctor. I saw him, and on the day of the transfer he could not complete it successfully. It took him an hour and a half to finish, and I was in severe pain. When we asked why it failed, he cited my age and weight. He knew my age and weight from the first day. Three weeks later, we saw another fertility doctor, who found a fibroid that this doctor and his staff had missed. Be very careful when going to RMA.
