Everyone on the team—from Dr. Pena, my IVF coordinator, the nurses, and the phlebotomists to the receptionists—was helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. Whenever I had questions, they answered them patiently. They took excellent care of me throughout the process and made me feel at ease. They made me feel valued and cared for. A few years ago, I conceived my son through intrauterine insemination (IUI) at RMA, and now I am pregnant again through in vitro fertilization (IVF) at RMA. I would not have the family I have today without Dr. Pena and his outstanding team.

From the beginning, I had a very comprehensive experience at RMA in Patchogue, starting with a phone call with Karen. She told me that my insurance had begun covering Progyny, that they accepted it, and that I should check my insurance benefits. Because of the cost, I had never considered treatment such as IVF, but Karen's information helped me learn that my insurance would reimburse 100%. I became pregnant after my second transfer using eggs from a donor at our local egg bank. Dr. Pena always called me personally to answer my questions, sometimes even calling twice in one day to address additional questions. My coordinator, Gabby, and Stephanie in billing also always responded promptly. They explained all my options in detail and were consistently kind and supportive of whatever I was considering. I had previously experienced four miscarriages at another fertility clinic on Long Island, where the atmosphere felt like an assembly line and made me feel like cattle. Here, the care felt noticeably more personal and less stressful. The operating room nurses were also very kind, and having such a dedicated team was truly reassuring in a stressful situation. Each office is slightly different, and I liked my experience at the Patchogue office best. Procedures were usually completed quickly because they opened early, so I could get to work on time. I highly recommend Dr. Pena and the entire RMA staff!

Whenever I had a question or concern, he replied quickly, whether by email or phone, which reassured me and made me feel well supported. RMA overall runs like a well-oiled machine: prompt calls with results, clear emails explaining next steps, and almost no unnecessary delays. I chose the RMA East Patchogue office, while access to RMA's other locations gave me flexibility for most laboratory testing. I am deeply grateful for the compassionate, professional care I received—it was essential to my journey.

This is my first negative review. I feel compelled to expose the repeated negligence and gaslighting I experienced during my year of treatment at RMA. Everything began well. My coordinator, Melissa, communicated clearly. I met my doctor, Dr. Pena, only once before he recommended IVF. I do not remember my first impression of him in January 2025, but it was not negative. What I remember most was feeling overwhelmed that my reproductive options had suddenly become so limited. From March through August 2025, I underwent three egg retrievals at RMA and generally felt supported. Everything began to fall apart when we transitioned from retrievals to transfers. The first thing I noticed was a sharp decline in communication. During retrievals, the nurses reliably called after every monitoring appointment with instructions. While preparing for my first embryo transfer, they often forgot to call, rarely sent follow-up emails, and sometimes sent incorrect instructions. Communication deteriorated until my second transfer, when they emailed me to “start progesterone in oil and birth control.” Because this was my second transfer, I knew the correct instruction was progesterone in oil and an antibiotic. Taking birth control as directed would certainly have ruined my transfer. I emailed my coordinator, now Nicole, with my concerns, but she never responded. The next warning sign was a surprise $10,000 bill. Anyone who has undergone IVF through insurance knows the preauthorization process. Anything insurance will not cover must be prepaid, ensuring the clinic receives full payment and protecting patients from unexpected bills later. Before I began IVF, RMA billing coordinator Gleb assured me I would never receive a surprise bill from the clinic. I received one anyway, and Gleb simply explained, “This was a misunderstanding between you and your insurance company.” His earlier promise was apparently meaningless. How do I feel about my care from Dr. Pena? I remain conflicted. I interacted with him only a few times over the year. I felt he took a one-size-fits-all approach to infertility treatment. When my first retrieval produced disappointing results, I asked what else we could do. He brushed me off and made me feel foolish for asking. He was unwilling to try new medications and treated questions as an annoyance. He only wanted to end the call quickly. The final straw came in early 2026, when I received another surprise bill—this time for embryo freezing. I could not believe it. I had created two euploid embryos at RMA, but both transfers failed. Why was I being charged for storage when I had no embryos stored? I learned that one segmental embryo from my April 2025 retrieval had been stored for nearly a year without my knowledge. I was angry and confused. No one could explain why I had not been informed. For a month, I called RMA every week trying to reach a genetic counselor who could help me understand segmental mosaic embryos so I could make an informed decision about keeping or discarding it. I left messages and called several times each week, but no one ever answered. I left RMA at the end of 2025 and found a wonderful doctor who seems genuinely concerned about my condition. Remember the medications Dr. Pena dismissed without discussion? My new doctor brought them up before I could even ask. Looking back, I feel RMA simply gave up on me. I felt abandoned when I needed support most. I hope this review helps other hopeful parents avoid the same experience. I wish I had advocated for myself sooner.

It feels fitting to write this review at 12.5 weeks pregnant, exactly one year after my first consultation with Dr. Peña and RMA. My husband and I knew nothing about IVF. We initially saw Dr. Peña because I carry a genetic mutation and wanted to understand IVF and decide whether to try naturally as planned or pursue IVF. His initial consultation and testing were extremely thorough, and he identified additional issues my OB-GYN had missed or could not detect. His attention to detail helped us realize IVF might be our only option because time was limited. Over 8 months, I had 2 egg retrievals and 2 embryo transfers. His coordinator Melissa was very helpful throughout. His nursing team, especially Jess and Alexis, were wonderful. I always had many questions, and they patiently answered them or found the answers. At one point, I became frustrated by the waiting between IVF stages. I emailed Dr. Peña with my concerns. He called within 10 minutes and stayed on the phone until every question and concern was addressed. I had never experienced being able to speak with a doctor immediately without feeling rushed. Dr. Peña was always honest with us. He adjusted protocols as needed, explained how he thought my body was responding, and worked with us to make and follow a plan. I am now happily pregnant and look forward to someday sending him a photo of the baby he helped create.

My husband and I had been trying to conceive for nearly two years. I have stage III endometriosis, and when we met Dr. Pena and his team, they were amazing. All the MAs, NPs, and coordinators were responsive, understanding, and patient. I never felt like a number, especially at his Patchogue office. Almost every staff member knew my name. When we began, he spent a full two hours discussing our plan of action. Everything went smoothly, and aside from waiting for the grant, our overall experience was excellent. My only concern was a nurse during egg retrieval who was not kind or understanding toward a patient with severe anxiety like mine. During an already anxious experience, I felt rushed and ashamed of how I felt. Overall, my husband and I became pregnant after one round of IVF. I believe everything depends on how you feel and advocating for the care you want.
