Dr. Stephen Sawin, United States
Dr. Sawin graduated first in his class from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his OB/GYN residency and reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a medical student teaching award. After fellowship, he moved to North Carolina to direct reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Mountain Area Health Education Center. During five years there, he received two teaching awards for his work with residents.
He has particular expertise in in vitro fertilization (IVF) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Dr. Sawin has performed more than 5,000 IVF procedures and more than 3,500 surgical procedures.
He has published extensively and has been invited to speak at local and national scientific meetings. His research has addressed the safety of myomectomy for uterine fibroids, the effect of hydrosalpinx on IVF success, and normal endometrial development and its effect on embryo implantation. He twice received the Philadelphia Area Reproductive Endocrine Society award for original infertility research, as well as the S. Leon Israel Award from the Philadelphia Obstetrical Society. He also twice received a Medical Professional Appreciation Award from the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association. Dr. Sawin is a former president of the Philadelphia Area Reproductive Endocrine Society (PARES).
He has taught board-review courses for OB/GYN physicians preparing for certification exams. Nationally, he recently completed service on the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' Reproductive Endocrinology Practice Committee, which helps set national standards for appropriate fertility care.
