Kara Nguyen, M.D., M.P.H., FACMG, FACOG, is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and medical genetics. Her areas of expertise include oncofertility, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, in vitro fertilization, donor eggs, donor embryos, and fertility preservation.

Kara Nguyen, M.D., M.P.H., FACMG, FACOG, is one of only a few physicians triple board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and medical genetics. She earned her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and her Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. After completing an accelerated three-year OB/GYN residency at Christiana Care Hospital in Delaware, Dr. Nguyen completed subspecialty training in medical genetics at the National Institutes of Health. At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital, she was the first OB/GYN accepted into its highly competitive Clinical Investigator Training Program. Her stem cell research was funded by the New England Fertility Society, the National Institutes of Health, and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. She served as Director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UPMC Pinnacle in central Pennsylvania and was active on the OB/GYN Quality Assurance Committee.

She has received numerous awards and scholarships and has been invited to speak for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, Good Day PA, and ABC27 News. Dr. Nguyen is actively involved in OB/GYN resident education at UPMC Pinnacle and Christiana Hospital in Delaware.

Dr. Nguyen joined Shady Grove Fertility in 2017 and now serves the central Pennsylvania region. Her areas of expertise include oncofertility, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, in vitro fertilization, donor eggs, donor embryos, and fertility preservation. Her approach to patient care earned her Patients’ Choice and Compassionate Doctor awards on Vitals.com and recognition on the Healthgrades.com Honor Roll.

Dr. Nguyen is married with three children and enjoys traveling, learning about different cultures, and trying new foods. Her family is active in overseas mission work, and she supports organizations focused on helping trafficking survivors recover.

My experience at Shady Grove Fertility was very disappointing. At first, they created a lot of unrealistic hope about my fertility treatment, leaving me frustrated and disappointed. Rather than focusing on my health, they seemed to treat every visit as an opportunity to sell additional services. I left feeling more like a prospective customer than a patient who genuinely needed help. I expected more transparency and attentive care, but unfortunately that was not the case. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this clinic. After they finally told me the cost, I was not willing to undergo certain treatments. They then tried to persuade me to try another method that they themselves said had only a 2-4% success rate. It sounded like nothing more than a money grab.

My growing family will always be grateful to the SGF team and doctors. The staff are kind and compassionate and are always willing to ease concerns/answer questions throughout the journey. SGF always made us feel like family, and it was wonderful knowing a team supported us at every step. I cannot praise this staff enough and highly recommend them to anyone considering this journey!

My wife and I unfortunately had a very poor experience at this clinic, especially with the front desk staff. They were cold, uncaring, and at times quite rude—extremely upsetting when dealing with something as sensitive and emotional as infertility. No one chooses this path, and compassion should be fundamental. Their attitude made us feel dismissed rather than supported, especially Joy. They seemed not to understand what patients in this situation endure. Because of the poor front desk service, we decided not to return to Shady Grove and continued our fertility journey elsewhere, where we fortunately succeeded. If you work in health care, especially in a sensitive field like infertility, kindness, empathy, and proper training are essential. At one of the most vulnerable times in their lives, patients deserve to feel seen, heard, and supported.

I cannot say enough good things about this facility. IVF treatment is an emotional and stressful process, and the team at Shady Grove gave me tremendous support and care at every stage. My nurse, Brittany, was always available to answer my questions and concerns. Nurse practitioner Elyse was also very kind during every scan. They truly made a journey I never expected to experience easy to understand and navigate.

I am very happy with my treatment and grateful to the physicians, nurses, and everyone who helped our family grow! I am now playing on the floor with my five-month-old baby, who would not be here without Shady Grove. Our entire family is deeply grateful! Our experience with SGF Lancaster and the Chesterbrook team was exceptional. Before meeting Elyse and Dr. O, we felt very discouraged, but everyone treated us like family and supported us through every challenge. Brittany was patient and extremely helpful. The financial team was thorough and thoughtful. Joy greeted me by name every time I entered. The phlebotomist even remembered which color bandage I disliked. The details showed how much they cared. My husband and I participated in the embryo donation program at Shady Grove Mechanicsburg. We are deeply grateful that our first transfer succeeded, and I am now 12 weeks pregnant. From our first day in November through our “graduation day” in April, the Mechanicsburg staff impressed us. We met Dr. Nguyen only once, but she was very kind, supportive, and caring. She made sure to see us and wish us well on our “graduation day.” Most of our interactions were with front desk staff and nurses. The front desk staff always knew my name when I walked in, even on my first visit. They were consistently kind and welcoming. The several nurses who worked with me throughout the journey were wonderful. They were organized and punctual. When they said I would hear from them on a certain day and time, I did. The financial team and all other staff involved in our care were pleasant to work with and quickly answered our questions. Kristi, the nurse who performed three of our ultrasounds, was genuinely excited for us and explained everything that was happening and what we were seeing. She truly cared about us and our pregnancy. We are deeply grateful that our journey was as quick and smooth as we had hoped. Thank you!

Unless you meet a certain BMI requirement, they will do nothing for you except recommend weight management. And unless you have enough money to pay out of pocket, do not bother seeking GLP1 treatment through them. If you want to use insurance, they will simply send you back to your PCP for the medication. Their hours are also exactly the same as my work hours, 8 to 4, and they close for lunch at noon, so trying to reach them during my lunch break is wonderful. Let me save you the trouble after they let me down.

They are full of nothing but lies. My wife and I had a free consultation with Nguyen MD in October 2024. Even though it was free, I still received a bill from them. I explained this to their billing department, but they continued sending bills and charged my insurance! I will take them to court for a fraudulent insurance claim over what was supposed to be free information about the procedure, costs, and so on...

We had a decent experience at Shady Grove. We really liked their former PA Mindy and new PA Kaitlyn. We worked with them for years to obtain my full diagnosis and the best treatment plan. At every visit, the sonographers and nurses warmly provided updates and explained everything in detail. The billing department was regularly difficult to deal with. Some items were billed incorrectly repeatedly, we were told we had not met our deductible, and we were charged for services we knew our insurance covered. Going back and forth with them was the most frustrating part. Overall, however, we had a good experience obtaining the correct diagnosis, receiving comprehensive treatment explanations, and completing several rounds of IUI. When we ultimately conceived naturally, we had been planning to proceed with IVF. The facility allowed us to remain under their care for the first 9 weeks of pregnancy to monitor progress, for which we are deeply grateful. Leaving their care for routine obstetric care was very difficult. We would use Shady Grove again if needed.

This clinic is absolutely profit-driven! If you do not begin treatment immediately, they reject you. I went for a consultation and was told that I was 30 pounds overweight and ineligible for fertility treatment. I then asked whether I could at least complete some testing while continuing to lose weight, and they told me that even after reaching a certain BMI, I would still need an HSG and laboratory tests. I spent months devastated by the rejection before deciding to go to Penn State Health, and they have been amazing! My consultation was on Monday, I had an HSG three days later, laboratory testing a week later, and additional blood work several weeks later to confirm ovulation. Now I am simply waiting for my follow-up and the next step in treatment.

We began going to Shady Grove this summer after several months of trying unsuccessfully for a second child. Dr. Nguyen was compassionate and professional. Everyone, from the front desk and nurses to the ultrasound technicians, was excellent. The clinic assigns a nurse coordinator, and ours always responded quickly. There were occasional minor billing issues, but that happens anywhere insurance is involved. The clinic always found suitable appointment times, and I never waited long. We are now expecting our second child. Honestly, I was sad to leave Shady Grove because their team provided first-rate care and service.

I went to Shady Grove because I had been diagnosed with PCOS and could not conceive naturally. I spent tens of thousands of dollars on treatment that ultimately had no chance of working because I had severe endometriosis. During my care at SGF, I repeatedly raised concerns about my symptoms and possible endometriosis, but Dr. Lauren Roth dismissed them, saying, “It’s just your PCOS.” All my time, money, and heartbreak were wasted because they refused to investigate an underlying problem. “You’re young; you just need to keep trying,” she said. I would not recommend SGF to anyone.

100% recommended! After trying naturally for more than a year without success, we sought help. My husband and I both had comprehensive testing and then discussed our situation and options with Dr. Nguyen. We decided on IUI. Fertility treatment can be complicated, with precise timing and frequent visits, and emotionally difficult, but the staff was consistently patient, kind, caring, helpful, encouraging, and professional. We conceived during our third treatment cycle and now have a healthy baby boy! We are so grateful to SGF for helping us build our family and overcome infertility.

I am very grateful to the entire Shady Grove team and Dr. Nyugen. After two intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles, we became pregnant and are now more than halfway through the pregnancy. Every staff member treated me with respect, was attentive, answered my questions patiently, and provided a great deal of support. Throughout the process, I felt heard and included in every decision. This was especially important when I asked to move the IUI to another day because I felt I understood my cycle, and that was the cycle that resulted in pregnancy. At first, I was nervous and unsure how to seek help, but I am very glad I took that step. I had a wonderful experience at Shady Grove and encourage anyone struggling with infertility to seek their help!

At one point, I wondered whether I would ever have the chance to realize the dream I am living today. With the help of an outstanding minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS) physician, Dr. Nguyen, her excellent team, and the care team in Towson, Maryland, we finally welcomed our long-awaited, beautiful baby. Because of endometriosis, IVF was our last hope of becoming parents. I am not sure anything can prepare someone for the emotional impact of infertility, but I can assure you that at SGF Mechanicsburg, you will receive not only excellent clinical care but also genuine compassion and empathy. I especially want to thank several staff members who made my experience exceptional: my nurses Morgan S and Amanda R, as well as Shannon V and Caitlin R. I would recommend this clinic to anyone who needs fertility treatment, and I will definitely return for a future embryo transfer!

I met Dr. Bear at the office today. She was absolutely incredible. She broke everything down in a way anyone could understand. Every woman I met in the office was wonderful. They are LGBTQ-friendly. I am in a lesbian relationship, and they treated us like human beings. Honestly, I could not have asked for a better experience!

They asked us to pay for the shared-risk program, which I thought covered everything. But my appointment was scheduled, and I was charged 1000 dollars without any advance payment information. The front desk was also rude.

They made me go to Maryland for testing. The call center told me they do not perform male semen analysis and reproductive testing in the office, so I had to go to Maryland. I do think this should change, and I hope male and female reproductive health screening becomes more open and accessible, especially for people who cannot travel. People who cannot travel should be allowed to travel for work or medical care/health. A person's right to drive and travel should not be taken away except for murder or serious charges. I will make sure my great state of Pennsylvania respects this. The governor's and boards' guidance and projections for Harrisburg and elsewhere make this a great state. Amen.

I highly recommend Shady Grove Fertility in Wexford to anyone considering treatment. Whether you only need monitoring, a medicated cycle, or any of the treatments they offer, you will be in good hands. As someone who experienced multiple miscarriages, seeking help was very intimidating at first. Dr. Nguyen, and especially the nurses and staff at Shady Grove Wexford, guided us step by step. Whenever a question or concern arose, their consistent and prompt communication through the portal greatly helped ease our emotions. We love all the staff, and everyone was very friendly at every visit. If you are reading this and nervous about medication or any treatment, I was there too. We postponed treatment for quite some time while staying in close contact with the care team, and when we finally decided to begin monitoring and medication, they were there to help us through it. It was worth every penny! Without hesitation, we give SGF Wexford 5 stars!

After years of trying, multiple failed pregnancies, and several emergency surgeries, Shady Grove finally helped my wife and me conceive our first child. I will always be grateful for that. I have been with Shady Grove since September 2024. My medical team has consistently provided a five-star experience. Working with my financial counselor, however, has always filled me with dread. The financial counselors need training in manners and professional ethics. They provide incorrect estimates, make billing errors, call to ask me for money on the day of my miscarriage, act rudely when my husband and I request itemized receipts, and much more!!! We are living through another person’s nightmare and spending more than $50,000 on treatment, so receiving no compassion or care is extremely upsetting.

We went to Shady Grove Fertility Wexford for our IVF journey! The Wexford staff and office were always so welcoming and caring! Every morning monitoring appointment I was remembered by front desk staff and greeted by name. Demi made bloodwork painless and such a breeze and was so sweet! Dana and Susan were thorough, patient, and caring for each monitoring and procedure appointment. When we got pregnant with our baby girl after our successful FET, I could feel how truly happy the staff was for me and it was a bittersweet moment to graduate! I am forever thankful to the Wexford team for helping to make my dream of being a mom come true!

I loved my experience at SGF! They were welcoming and helped ease my anxiety about my previous miscarriage. They go to great lengths for their patients. I am a gestational carrier who has had two pregnancies and will begin a mock cycle in a few days. Today I called the clinic to schedule outside monitoring. They took my information and said their outside monitoring team would contact me to arrange an appointment. I then received a call from my original fertility clinic saying that Shady Grove had refused to work with an independent gestational carrier who was not represented by an agency!

I accompanied a friend to SGF for a procedure and truly appreciate the team's professional and thoughtful care! The warm welcome from the front desk helped her relax. The medical assistants she had been looking forward to seeing also made her laugh. Susan, the clinic manager, even came over to check on her and ask whether she needed anything else. A friend recommended Shady Grove after having an excellent experience there. From the moment my husband and I met Dr. Green, I finally felt understood. She was wonderful and took the time to explain all our options and test results in detail, which no one had done before. Their online system makes it very easy to track treatment progress and next steps, and email communication with the financial counselor and medical team is convenient for busy couples. Infertility treatment can be overwhelming, but Shady Grove Wexford provides outstanding service from the moment you enter the clinic. Everyone at the front desk and scheduling office is very kind. Our cycle did not go well this weekend, and I had many questions. Before I even had a chance to contact the clinic, Dr. Green called me to review my results and discuss the next steps in my treatment plan. I highly recommend them to anyone experiencing infertility.

If you are 45 or older, avoid this organization. Apparently, they try every possible way to make women over 45 spend as much as possible on donor eggs. Under no circumstances are you allowed to use your own eggs. These organizations do this only to create the illusion of high success rates. To ensure that their statistics are not affected, they deliberately conceal the difficult side of fertility treatment and eliminate the option of using donor eggs. Their success rates are engineered. They accept only women with a high likelihood of success and guarantee it by requiring the use of donor eggs.

There are not enough words to express my gratitude to the SGF Wexford team. Everyone—and I mean everyone—is spectacular: the ultrasound technicians, nurses, receptionists, phlebotomists, and everyone else. I transferred to SGF after 6 months at a different reproductive endocrinology and infertility clinic, and it was the best decision I ever made. I love that at Shady Grove, you are assigned to 1 nurse, 1 doctor, and 1 financial coordinator. This made it feel like a personalized team of experts who were not only IVF specialists but also experts on my specific file and circumstances!

Dr. Nguyen is an outstanding physician. Thanks to her, we are blessed with our one-year-old daughter, Nalani. Dr. Nguyen provided compassionate, honest, and individualized care throughout our entire fertility process. She continued to support our fertility journey even when we moved, chose to discontinue our fertility process, changed our fertility plan, and eventually re-engaged.
