Doctor Introduction

Dr. Colleen Casey

“I entered college with an interest in journalism but during my second year of college I began working in the medical school and changed my major to zoology with a minor in women’s studies. This put me on the path toward human medicine, with an emphasis on women’s health.

“I feel privileged to work with physicians who have such integrity and are so dedicated to helping women who come from many different backgrounds. I spent time practicing at a teaching hospital in Ghana, Africa and at the Indian Health Service in Alaska during my medical residency because I believe every person deserves good medical care. I didn’t realize how much that right extended to reproductive medicine until I had children in my late 30s. As a mother and doctor, I want to help everyone struggling to conceive to have a child of their own.

“As my patient, you can trust me to be open and direct. I want you to be able to make decisions and follow treatment plans based on having all the information you need about your diagnosis and options. But I’m also willing to provide my opinion when making a choice feels too tough.

“One of the aspects I love best about reproductive medicine is the science of it and the fascinating new advancements in technology and medicine that make it possible to support your goal to conceive. Because of the complex nature of this specialty, I’ve designed my schedule to include time to answer your questions by phone. I also will call you personally with lab results so we can talk through them together. I want you to feel confident that you’re in the best hands possible, with the best chance for a successful outcome.”

“I am originally from Minnesota and my son goes to the same school my late father graduated from in 1962. I am the only physician in the family and I do cross the river (twice!) everyday.”

“Values:  honesty, hard-work, empathy, loyalty, open-minded, non-judgmental”

Dr. Casey joined the Center for Reproductive Medicine in 2011 after working several years at a private practice infertility clinic in the Twin Cities. During her fellowship, she was awarded a T32 National Research Training Program in Reproductive Medicine to support two years of her research on how hormones relating to obesity alter reproductive potential. She has presented that research at numerous national and international meetings. Dr. Casey is an active volunteer in the profession, serving several years on the Advisory Council of the Minnesota Chapter of ACOG since 2010, and on the District VI ACOG Legislative Committee. She lives in Lake Elmo with her husband and two young children, where she enjoys her free time running, knitting, reading and spending time with her family.

I am very disappointed with this clinic. A year after verbally instructing them to discard my embryos, I still had to pay another year of storage fees. Worse, after telling me I had almost no chance of using the embryo myself, they offered me the option to donate it. This lack of communication and respect for my decision is unacceptable. If you value professionalism and transparency, avoid this clinic.

Very accurate and honest, explained in a courteous and knowledgeable way. We discussed my options and the professionals involved.

From freezing my eggs while single in 2019 to a successful pregnancy in 2024, I had a wonderful experience here with Dr. Hopeman. She is very kind, calm, and reassuring. IVF is a long process, and most interactions at the clinic are with nursing staff. CRM divides OB/GYN monitoring and fertility treatment between two companies, making it easier than elsewhere to obtain insurance coverage under OB/GYN codes. CRM is also not a private-equity company like CCRM, which appeared to adopt highly predatory pricing and billing after its last acquisition, so CRM aims to keep prices more reasonable than competitors. CRM's communication still needs improvement. My financial representative initially resisted billing covered claims to my insurer and took weeks to return calls and emails, creating a poor experience. I also found her unprofessional. However, I became pregnant through CRM and plan to return for my second child. Although many administrative issues need attention, the medical care itself is good. Thanks to CRM, I cannot wait to welcome my baby in December 2024!

Their poor communication has seriously reduced my confidence in this clinic. They mislabeled my blood sample and my spouse's genetic-testing sample. They redid his but never called to tell me mine also needed to be repeated. I learned only after calling the genetic-testing company, which explained what happened. I do not even trust these people to label my embryos correctly. I would not come here if my VA benefits did not require it. The provider did not order enough medication from the beginning. I drove to Minneapolis daily for appointments, was told it was trigger day, then received a nurse's call telling me to return the next day for another ultrasound. I then had to drive around Minneapolis at 8 p.m. seeking more medication. The nurse refused to let me speak with Dr. Kapfhamer: “Well, I am his nurse, and he will only tell you the same thing, so I will tell him you canceled”—Lisa Conway. He is my provider, and I want to make an informed decision about my body. I am extremely disappointed with how this clinic operates. The lack of communication between patients and providers is frustrating, especially when patients spend so much money. If possible, seek ART services elsewhere. I promise you will save more money in the end.

The initial appointment coordinator was rude and insensitive. The manager never called me back. Take your money elsewhere.

I gave 4 stars because my first round was very successful, the experience was excellent, and we had our lovely baby boy. However, the billing department staff are very rude. I hate calling with questions about my bill or trying to get a statement. I also had frozen embryos that we wanted to discard after our second attempt failed. The clinic told us to keep them until our cycle ended and said we would not be charged. When I later called to discard them, they said they would email me an authorization form. They never said my husband and I had to go to the clinic for notarization. Because of this, time passed and we are now being charged. I am disappointed by the lack of communication. We have already paid this clinic a great deal of money.

Black queer people: This is not a welcoming place for us. The receptionist was kind, but Dr. Casey showed no interest in us. She was cold, rushed us out, and seemed impatient with our questions. This is an expensive process, so feeling unwelcome or like a burden is a major warning sign. Being in a place run this way is already stressful and overwhelming, and we did not feel at ease. I would not entrust such an important, life-changing matter/procedure to a doctor who is so cold and rude. Dr. Casey needs to do better and become more culturally aware before displaying a rainbow flag on her website. At minimum, she could be warmer and more engaged. Good luck to everyone on your journey. This was not the place for us! Update: After reading other reviews, I realized that her cold attitude was not directed specifically at Black queer people. However, as an extremely vulnerable group, we will leave at any sign that says, “You do not belong here.” I am deeply sorry for every patient/couple who had a poor experience at this clinic. It is very unfortunate. They need to do better.

I just want to share my experience and journey with CRM. The moment I entered CRM, I knew I would become a mother and that they would bless me with a miracle. We had tried for 13 years without success. I chose CRM for my IVF journey. Why CRM rather than somewhere else? My belief is that it does not matter where you go. Every place has advantages and disadvantages. I simply went in thinking, 'Whatever happens, let it happen.' Others recommended different doctors at CRM, but I chose her because her name was 'Dr. Hopeman.' That gave me tremendous confidence and hope! That was it. Yes, we became pregnant after our first FET with Dr. Casey. Thank you, Dr. Hopeman. Thank you for giving me twins! I gave birth to two very healthy boys last week! Without you and the CRM team, I would not be a mother today! 🥹🥹 Thank you from the bottom of my heart!❤️🥹

Throughout my infertility treatment, Dr. K and his team have consistently provided attentive support and clear, transparent information. I want to personally thank IVF nurse Melanie; she truly is the best—compassionate, caring, and knowledgeable. I have full confidence in CRM and feel hopeful about my current treatment.

I wish communication had been better. Because of poor communication, they asked me after business hours to reschedule an appointment that I had already waited a long time to secure. Now I had to reschedule again? No. There are other well-regarded fertility clinics available. I declined and left. Very disappointing.

Poor communication caused unnecessary stress and wasted time. My husband emailed the order to CRM, went to South Minneapolis to pick up the kit, completed it, and then went to the hospital. Only then did they tell him that he needed a paper form, so they could do nothing with the sample. Now we have to start over: wait another two days, pick up another kit, and repeat the process. I hope they are more competent at counting sperm than communicating.

Dr. Mejia was very professional and knowledgeable. She listened carefully to us and developed several treatment options for us to choose from. We left the appointment fully informed about the treatment plan and comfortable with our plans for the future. I highly recommend a small private fertility clinic like CRM instead of a large chain where you are treated as just a number.

Dr. Josh Kapphammer is an excellent doctor who truly listens to and cares about his patients. I was very nervous about surgery, but he was gentle, reassured me, made me believe I could do it, and remained positive throughout. He is also extremely kind and speaks to you like a person, not just a patient, which I greatly appreciate. I would recommend him to everyone.

I do not usually write reviews, but after three years of treatment at CRM, I felt it was important to share our experience in hopes of helping other families. My husband and I began IVF at CRM in 2022 with very little guidance and a great deal of trust. Over time, we spent a considerable amount of money. After one egg retrieval and six failed transfers, I noticed a small sign in the waiting room advertising a third-party financing program that covered multiple retrievals and unlimited transfers for a fixed fee, with a full refund if no live birth resulted. CRM never proactively told us about this option, which could have saved us a substantial amount of money. Communication—especially with the financial department—was consistently difficult. I encountered rude behavior, unanswered calls, and conflicting information about insurance coverage. When I asked for routine lab orders to be sent to my primary care clinic instead of driving to Minneapolis, my request was refused and dismissed. Clinical communication was also frustrating. I often had to remind staff which medications I could not take and how my body had previously responded to treatment. Despite these issues, we were fortunate to welcome our daughter in April 2024, and I will always be grateful to CRM for helping us build our family. In 2025, while attempting another embryo transfer, I received several voicemails that incorrectly referred to pregnancy complications even though I was not pregnant. We later received unexpected bills for services we had previously been told would be covered by the practice, and our requests for details or a short-term payment arrangement were again met with indifference. After three years, we decided to pay the remaining balance and seek care elsewhere. Although we are grateful for the outcome, I strongly encourage patients to advocate for themselves, thoroughly research every available financial option, and make sure they feel supported by the entire care team. As a nurse, I expect patients to receive the same care and communication that I strive to provide when they are most vulnerable. Infertility is emotionally, physically, and financially exhausting, so support is essential.

I had an excellent first appointment with Dr. Hopeman at the Center for Reproductive Medicine. If you are looking for a compassionate fertility doctor or fertility clinic, I highly recommend them. From the moment I entered the clinic, all the staff were warm and friendly. Dr. Hopeman made me feel truly heard and understood as we discussed my fertility history and plans to conceive. I especially appreciated that she never made me feel uncomfortable for wanting to begin fertility testing early. She explained everything clearly, drew my attention to things I had never considered, and made the process feel less overwhelming. I left feeling reassured, supported, and very grateful to have found such an excellent reproductive medicine specialist.

Hello, good afternoon. I am sorry to bother you, but I have some questions about semen testing. Can you help me obtain this test? My partner and I have been trying to conceive for several months, so I would like to begin with a semen analysis. I am Latino and hope you can help me review the results without too much difficulty. I am willing to pay all costs, but I need your help. Thank you very much, and God bless you.

I am currently undergoing IVF, and most people here are wonderful! However, the Asian woman who draws blood seems unhappy and is far too rough. The other staff are much gentler, while she causes more bleeding and bruising. I would remind her that we already undergo multiple injections every day and frequent positioning, which is an extremely difficult experience. It should not be hard to be gentle with patients.

In my opinion, the doctor does not understand reproductive disorders that cause infertility well. He called my PCOS mainly an 'annoying' symptom rather than a major cause of infertility, even though PCOS causes 80% of infertility cases. Dr. D'Amario needs a better bedside manner and should think carefully about his words. PCOS caused my infertility; it is not merely an 'annoying' symptom but the underlying cause. Please understand current PCOS issues, since this is your specialty. It would improve patient care. Their portal is also difficult, and nurses sometimes fail to make proper chart notes. The repeated communication with nurses is frustrating, and good communication is truly lacking.

Although Dr. Casey was not my primary physician throughout IVF treatment—my primary physician was Meg Hopeman—she performed my egg retrieval and embryo transfer during my second cycle, and I truly believe she has a magical touch. During the second cycle, only five eggs were retrieved, and just one developed into a blastocyst. Today, that single blastocyst is our precious newborn, our greatest blessing and miracle. On the final day of retrieval, Dr. Casey's treatment plan, exceptional skill, and calm, reassuring presence played an essential role during a challenging time. She approached every step with confidence, compassion, and professionalism, giving us tremendous hope. Although she was not my primary physician, her attentive care had a profound impact on our journey. Words cannot express our gratitude for everything she helped make possible. Dr. Casey, thank you for your dedication and kindness, and for helping us bring our beautiful baby into the world. We will always remember it. I also want to sincerely thank Melanie, a member of the operating room clinical team. During the embryo transfer, I was under enormous stress and emotional strain, and her compassion, kindness, and reassuring presence meant more to me than words can express. She stayed with me throughout, offering comfort and support when I needed it most. Her gentle care eased my anxiety and made the process feel less overwhelming. I am sincerely grateful for her dedication and genuine empathy.

Dr. Casey and my ultrasound technician, whose name I believe was Deanna, were wonderful during my saline sonogram appointment. This is a basic test before starting IVF. I told Dr. Casey that I had difficulty during an HSG at another clinic, but she placed the catheter very skillfully. She succeeded on the first attempt without any discomfort. I did not even realize the procedure was over. I am very much looking forward to the next steps of IVF with Dr. Casey and her team supporting me throughout. Other notes: The nursing staff return calls promptly, and scheduling is very convenient. All staff speak to patients respectfully and explain medical information clearly. Since everyone is there for fertility treatment, I did not experience the distant or condescending attitude I have felt at other clinics (*looking at you, Southdale OB-GYN*). The waiting room and offices are beautiful and comfortable. It feels more like a hotel lobby than a clinic, in a very pleasant and comfortable way.

My treatment experience with Dr. Casey was extremely disappointing and left me feeling ignored and uncared for. After three physically and emotionally exhausting intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles, I questioned Dr. Casey about my elevated thyroid levels. I discovered that CRM had not checked them, so I arranged testing through my primary care practice. To my surprise, Dr. Casey claimed there was no record of my hypothyroidism, even though all records from my primary care practice had clearly been sent before treatment began. His lack of awareness of my medical history was concerning and, frankly, seemed impossible given the information I provided. What followed was even more frustrating: Dr. Casey became defensive, dismissed my concerns, and stated unequivocally that my thyroid 'had nothing to do with why I had not become pregnant.' This response felt dismissive and showed a profound lack of empathy. My feelings were completely invalidated, and I strongly felt that I had wasted valuable time, energy, and money on three IUI cycles while my thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) remained significantly elevated at 5.77. My overall impression was that they paid little attention to detail and offered little genuine care. I felt like a number in a system rather than an individual confronting the enormous challenge of infertility. During such a vulnerable and difficult experience, I expected more professionalism, understanding, and attentiveness from my healthcare provider. Dr. Casey's lack of accountability and defensive attitude only increased my distress. Despite these serious concerns, I felt pressured to continue with in vitro fertilization (IVF) at the same clinic. I felt powerless and exhausted and did not want to endure the difficult process of starting again at a new clinic. Although IVF did not produce the outcome I hoped for, I accept that result and do not blame Dr. Casey for it. My primary complaints concern the initial IUI experience, the clear medical oversight regarding my thyroid, and the highly unprofessional and uncaring response to my reasonable concerns. I urge others seeking compassionate, attentive fertility care to consider these issues carefully.
