Jillian Kurtz, DO, is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist at ORM Fertility's Portland office. A Portland native, she was “thrilled to return to the Pacific Northwest and begin serving patients here” after medical training in Colorado, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
Dr. Kurtz's passion for women's health and reproductive well-being began before medical school, when she worked as a patient advocate at Planned Parenthood in college. “Helping women through vulnerable situations has always felt natural to me,” she says. “I grew up with three sisters and have always been drawn to caring for women.”
Her interest in reproductive autonomy grew to include advocating for people's right to build the families they want.
Helping individuals and couples achieve their reproductive goals is deeply rewarding. Everyone deserves a family, and it is wonderful to see more nontraditional families grow and thrive.
Dr. Kurtz also empathizes with patients because she faced reproductive challenges herself. “My husband and I began trying to conceive near the end of residency, but month after month passed without a pregnancy,” she says. They pursued IVF and had two unsuccessful embryo transfers before taking time to regroup. “We were heartbroken and decided to take a month off. That was when we conceived naturally—proof of the value of reducing stress!”
When they began trying for a second child, conception was again difficult, so they returned to embryos created during their first IVF experience and succeeded with the first transfer. “I am truly glad I did IVF and had embryos remaining,” Dr. Kurtz says. “It reduced the stress of a second pregnancy.”
I went through assuming I could become pregnant and then facing unexpected difficulties and struggles. It was very hard. Now I can empathize with my patients in a personal and genuine way because the path to building a family is not smooth.
Her fertility challenges also made Dr. Kurtz a strong advocate for proactive fertility care and education about services such as egg freezing. “For people who have not found a life partner or are unsure whether they want children, egg freezing can be an excellent way to gain peace of mind,” she says.
