Dr. Anish Shah, United States
Dr. Anish Shah earned his undergraduate degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After working in Nicaragua to improve health care for women and children, he earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He completed his OB/GYN residency and three-year reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellowship at Duke University, where he also served on the medical staff.
At Duke, he earned a master’s degree in health economics and clinical research. His primary research focused on improving fertility care by reducing pregnancy loss and increasing safety. He studied medical genetics at Duke to develop a more comprehensive approach to reproductive genetic care, including comprehensive chromosome screening (CCS) of embryos to reduce pregnancy loss.
During nearly 10 years at Duke, he trained with some of the nation’s leading specialists in minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic, robotic, and hysteroscopic surgery. He received several teaching awards and, as chief resident, was asked to participate in the Southeast’s first single-incision laparoscopic surgery.
His research and publications range from reducing twin and higher-order multiple pregnancies in IVF to determining the optimal number of oocytes (eggs) retrieved during IVF to balance risks and benefits. Dr. Shah has received numerous research awards, including the prestigious Investigator Award at the 2010 Society for Gynecologic Investigation meeting. He has also authored numerous papers and abstracts and spoken extensively on fertility and reproductive endocrinology.
Dr. Shah believes in patient-centered fertility care and was named a “Top Doctor” for infertility by Richmond Magazine. OurHealth Richmond magazine also recognized him for “Best Bedside Manner.” He attributes this to his philosophy of treating “every patient like my family.” He is also committed to infertility outreach and serves as the physician liaison for Race for Parenthood, a 5K that raises funds for couples needing assisted reproductive technology. He has been involved since the event began and continued for the following 5 years.
Dr. Shah is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Society of Reproductive Surgeons, and Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART).
In his free time, Dr. Shah enjoys hiking, running, scuba diving, and spending time with his wife, son, and daughter.
Dr. Shah sees SGF patients at the Stony Point and Henrico locations in Richmond, Virginia.
