Erika Johnston-MacAnanny, M.D., FACOG, completed her undergraduate degree at Cornell University. She earned her medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, completed her OB/GYN residency at Thomas Jefferson University, and completed a three-year reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center.

After her fellowship, Dr. Johnston became an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Reproductive Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine. Her most recent role there was Medical Director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine. Dr. Johnston is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

She is active in continuing medical education, including writing for the American College of Physicians MKSAP and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Prolog workgroups. She was selected as co-chair of the 2018 ACOG Prolog revision in reproductive medicine. She currently chairs the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) Women’s Council and helps write questions for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) subspecialty board examination. She teaches advanced hysteroscopic surgery techniques to gynecologists and reproductive endocrinologists nationwide.

During her fellowship and faculty appointment at Wake Forest, she received national research and teaching awards and published research on fertility topics including in vitro fertilization, endometriosis, and recurrent implantation failure. Dr. Johnston joined SGF at its Richmond, Virginia office in 2018.

    Dr. Shah and his team are wonderful! They were very attentive to my needs, questions, and concerns. Communication was always clear and efficient. I began my IVF journey elsewhere but did not feel prioritized, so I decided to find a new doctor. Five minutes into the consultation, I was won over by Dr. Shah. He is very knowledgeable and created a personalized plan for me. He was supportive and encouraging throughout. He was honest with me, and no question or concern ever went unanswered. I highly recommend Dr. Shah and his team! You will not be disappointed!

    The billing department is awful. They kept a credit card on file without permission, charged it monthly, and customer service never called me. Once they save your card without consent, they force you through needless steps between headquarters and billing to remove it. I would give zero stars if possible. This problem has persisted for years, and I am tired of their practices and delays.

    I would never recommend Shady Grove or any affiliate without serious reservations. We began our surrogacy journey there about four years ago. After several failed rounds, we, an LGBT couple, were repeatedly pressured to purchase fresh eggs, yet success rates were below the doctor's expectations. This was compounded by poor bedside manner, arrogance, poor communication, and cold, uncaring staff. We later moved to another clinic outside SGF and had far better results. That clinic recommended what best served our family, not the institution. With fresh eggs over multiple rounds, our success rate at SGF was only 35%, while at the new clinic, using the same sperm, it rose from about 35% to 85%. When a lesbian friend first met her doctor, his opening words were, “You are going to miscarry,” rather than a greeting or conversation. She delivered a healthy baby who is now a healthy 9-month-old. When we decided to leave Shady Grove about two years ago, we signed disposal forms for our remaining sperm and embryos. We recently learned they failed to process one form but charged us storage fees. When I called both the billing company and Shady Grove, which cannot access each other's platforms, no one could tell me what remained in storage or under our account. We received over $500 in bills, yet no party could explain what the storage fees covered. Over the past two months, I have called SGF, Luminary, the Richmond office, and headquarters at least 10 times. Each time I was told, “We contacted the laboratory and will respond within 24 hours,” but no one ever called back. SGF took the joy and hope from what should have been a wonderful experience and made it dull, cold, and numbing. My only comfort is that our new clinic, where we expect a November delivery, has delivered much better care and outcomes. I rarely leave negative reviews, but under no circumstances would I recommend SGF positively. Shady Grove's poor technology, testing, and communication across the company, billing department, and local office turned what should have been a magical experience into a money-making operation. Our other clinic was excellent personally and professionally. I strongly recommend going elsewhere. We attended Virginia's three major clinics—SGF, VCU Health, and Virginia Fertility—and SGF ranked last. Do your research and learn from our mistakes. This is an emotional and sometimes difficult period in life, and it saddens me to say that I did not and still do not trust the staff to treat me or my family properly.

    Dr. Edelstein was terrible. He always invited us to ask questions but answered none of them. He spoke to me in a scolding tone and said I had not completed bloodwork, when he had not reviewed the records carefully. I regret not changing doctors sooner.

    I rarely write reviews, but I must share this experience. I currently work with Dr. Shah, who is outstanding, as is his clinical team. However, the finance department deserves less than zero. Communication is poor, information given to patients is incorrect, and insurance follow-up is almost nonexistent. They also failed to communicate with the clinical team and misled me. I am deeply disappointed with this aspect of their service.

    The billing department is terrible. They keep your card and set up automatic payments without disclosing it or obtaining permission, then claim they cannot remove the card when asked. If they found a way to add it unlawfully, they can find a way to remove it. Billing calls involve long waits—39 minutes today—and staff are consistently dismissive.

    My experience at Shady Grove has been wonderful thanks to Dr. Graham and Kayla. Dr. Graham is knowledgeable and kind, and I am grateful she remains my doctor. Kayla is exceptionally communicative and helpful, keeping me informed of appointments and responding quickly to questions. They also rescheduled a last-minute appointment to make me more comfortable, which meant a great deal. I look forward to continuing treatment at Shady Grove and highly recommend it!

    I cannot express how much I dislike Dr. Shai. He told my wife and me he would get her pregnant, but she lost two children. We had two eggs; he said one was not good but still wanted to proceed, and she miscarried. Avoid these clinics. They bill your insurance and make false promises about getting you pregnant.

    Last Wednesday, I went to the SGF Surgery Center in Richmond for egg retrieval. The entire experience was excellent from beginning to end! My nurse, Liz, was kind, attentive, and highly skilled. She placed my IV smoothly and explained postoperative care very well. She took excellent care of me before and after the procedure and ensured I was comfortable before discharge. Kristin, the CRNA, was outstanding and made the procedure painless—truly painless. Dr. Graham was very kind and did everything possible to complete the procedure despite difficulty visualizing my left ovary. Overall, I highly recommend this center!

    Today was my third egg retrieval and the smoothest one yet. Grace was amazing—she placed my IV on the first try and made it look effortless, which had never happened before. Nikki was also wonderful. She patiently guided me through every step, kept me calm, and carefully explained the anesthesia process. Dr. Shah performed the procedure expertly, and I felt very well cared for from start to finish. The entire team made what could have been an emotional and anxious process feel safe, supportive, and professional. I am very grateful for their kindness and clinical skill.

    Women are treated as the property of men here. If you are a heterosexual woman who wants control over your fertility by freezing your eggs to extend your reproductive timeline, go elsewhere. SGF added my male partner to my account without my consent and refused to remove him even though he fully agreed to it. At the same time, they completely ignored and refused to update the information for the female family member listed on my application. The entrenched sexism at this company is outrageous. I contacted them repeatedly to correct the issue, to no avail. I did not know they had added my partner to my account until I received my first egg-storage bill. Apparently their frozen eggs are stored out of state, so you are better off choosing an organization that genuinely respects women as adults with bodily autonomy.

    So far, I am halfway through IVF, and the staff has been amazing and easy to talk to. They answer all my questions and always respond promptly. I encountered a problem with one of my medications, and they were there to help—they are lifesavers. Everyone on the medical team, from the Roanoke office to the Richmond office, has made me smile.

I have a history of fainting and unfortunately fainted again during recovery after the procedure. They went above and beyond to keep me safe and comfortable.     Amazing, incredible, and exceptionally caring! The SGF care team is beyond outstanding! My husband and I were fortunate to be treated by Dr. Harris, who will always hold a special place in our hearts and in our family's hearts. After three consecutive miscarriages, we came to Dr. Harris full of hope and ready to begin IVF—excited but nervous. Dr. Harris, his team, and his wonderful nurse McKenna made us feel heard and valued, and no question ever felt foolish. Our IVF journey began very well, with an excellent egg retrieval. However, it took four transfers before we finally became pregnant; we are now 9 weeks, which still feels unbelievable. Before the fourth transfer, Dr. Harris made sure everything was right and discovered extensive scar tissue, which had caused my previous miscarriages. After three surgeries—with special thanks to Autumn, Liz, Dr. Johnston, and Dr. Harris—they cared for me attentively every time. They truly are the best care team. We are now 9 weeks pregnant and eagerly awaiting our miracle baby girl. I could not have done this without the SGF team. Every morning, Hannah, Rosie, June, and McKenna patiently answered all my questions. We are incredibly grateful to have found the SGF Richmond team—we love you!

    I had a wonderful experience with Benjamin Harris, MD, MPH at Shady Grove Fertility. From the very beginning, he was incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and thorough in explaining each step of the process. He made what could feel overwhelming much more manageable by breaking everything down in a clear and understandable way. Communication was excellent throughout my care. The online portal was easy to navigate, and I always received quick responses to my questions. The medication calendar and portal were especially helpful—very visual and easy to follow, which made a big difference during such a detailed process. His nurse, McKenna Hall, was equally amazing. She was very responsive and made sure all of my questions were answered, often coordinating directly with the doctor when needed. I always felt supported and never left wondering what to do next. The front office staff also played a big role in my positive experience. They were kind, encouraging, and even took the time to celebrate milestones along the way, which meant so much during such an emotional journey. This has been a long and sometimes difficult process, filled with fear, sacrifices, and many emotions. But having a team that consistently explained every step and reassured me made all the difference. I’m so grateful for their care and support. I’m now happily moving forward in my pregnancy journey and look forward to this new beginning. It was truly worth every sacrifice, pain, and tear.

    I had an excellent experience at Shady Grove Fertility – Stony Point. The team was supportive and professional throughout the entire process. My nurse, Maria Pafras, was outstanding—kind, welcoming, and very reassuring. Dr. Harris was extremely knowledgeable and made me feel confident at every step. I had excellent results: 17 eggs retrieved and 12 fertilized. I am very grateful and highly recommend them.

    Everyone at the Stony Point clinic was wonderful. My entire experience was very pleasant. Dr. Graham and his team were always helpful and patiently answered all my questions. Hannah Moon was especially thoughtful. She came to check on me before my egg retrieval and made me feel very comfortable before the procedure. My retrieval nurse, Katie (whom I assume is the doctor's spouse), was also very kind and caring. I cannot say enough good things about the whole team! I also appreciate that they are open every day, from as early as 7 a.m. to as late as 7 p.m. (if I remember correctly). This made it easy to work around my job, even when I had to visit every few days.

    Dr. Johnston is an outstanding fertility specialist at Shady Grove, and we are extremely grateful to have been under her care. From our first visit, she impressed us with her warmth, intelligence, and compassion. She always patiently answered our questions and carefully explained every step of treatment. IVF can be a stressful and emotional journey. In our case, because my husband has a rare condition, we once wondered whether we would ever have a biological child. Dr. Johnston managed our unique case with expertise and empathy. She made an intimidating process feel manageable and consistently gave us support and hope. If you are looking for a fertility specialist who is not only highly skilled but also kind, reassuring, and genuinely caring, I strongly recommend Dr. Johnston.     I am posting for my sister-in-law because she is uncomfortable speaking up herself, but after hearing what happened, I felt it would be irresponsible to stay silent. Dr. Johnston-MacAnanny is one of the most unethical doctors I have encountered. She failed to perform a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) twice, then had the audacity to suggest that 1) the patient could not tolerate the pain and 2) it was the patient's fault that the contrast did not reach the intended area—yet she could provide no further information. She then joked that the test would not need to be repeated at the next visit because, you know, it was uncomfortable for her. This doctor's attitude prioritized Shady Grove's interests over the patient's health and diagnosis. Her lack of transparency and judgmental attitude while the patient was visibly upset and seeking more information about her own body were deeply troubling. If you do not mind paying for expensive IVF without a complete evaluation, she may be the doctor for you. But if your case is unusual or complex, she will make you feel inadequate.

    I worked with Dr. Johnston-MacAnanny until my husband and I moved to North Carolina and had to find a clinic closer to us. I loved working with Dr. Johnston and believe she has the best bedside manner I have ever experienced from a doctor. You can tell that she genuinely loves her work and cares about her patients. I still recommend her to people I know in the RVA area. Excellent doctor!

    Dr. Johnston is truly wonderful. She always takes time to listen and builds an excellent rapport with me. I never feel rushed during appointments. My husband and I both love having her as our doctor. She is highly skilled!

    Dr. Johnston and her team are absolutely amazing. Thanks to them, after so many years, we finally have our own baby. I had a wonderful experience with the entire staff. Dr. Johnston connected with us over our silly love of Halloween and metal music and kept us laughing after the transfer. I believe that made all the difference. Everyone was very caring and supportive. When we are ready, we will return for our second child!

    Dr. Johnston is wonderful! She is professional, compassionate, and knowledgeable. We received treatment from her at Shady Grove Fertility for about eight months, including intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Her attentive care and guidance made our fertility journey smooth and reassuring—we felt supported and heard at every step. Dr. Johnston and her team were especially helpful in explaining complex medical terms and procedures in language we could understand.
