Michael C. Edelstein, M.D., completed his undergraduate degree at Cornell University, graduating with honors and election to Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his OB/GYN residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and received the Resident Teaching Award twice. He completed his reproductive endocrinology fellowship at the Howard and Georgeanna Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Norfolk, home of the first IVF program in the United States. Dr. Edelstein is board certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility and obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Edelstein has extensive experience in the medical and surgical aspects of reproductive endocrinology, infertility, and assisted reproductive technology. He has authored numerous research papers, abstracts, and book chapters and has spoken extensively on infertility and reproductive endocrinology.

Before joining Shady Grove Fertility, Dr. Edelstein was a founding partner and Medical Director of Virginia Fertility Associates/Virginia IVF and Andrology Center in Richmond.

Dr. Edelstein is committed to providing every patient with compassionate, respectful, state-of-the-art fertility care. He is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Society of Reproductive Surgeons, and a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In his free time, Dr. Edelstein enjoys spending time with family, reading, softball, tennis, running, and trivia. He is proud to have completed the New York City Marathon and competed on Jeopardy !

Dr. Edelstein was terrible. He always invited us to ask questions but answered none of them. He spoke to me in a scolding tone and said I had not completed bloodwork, when he had not reviewed the records carefully. I regret not changing doctors sooner.

I rarely write reviews, but I must share this experience. I currently work with Dr. Shah, who is outstanding, as is his clinical team. However, the finance department deserves less than zero. Communication is poor, information given to patients is incorrect, and insurance follow-up is almost nonexistent. They also failed to communicate with the clinical team and misled me. I am deeply disappointed with this aspect of their service.

The billing department is terrible. They keep your card and set up automatic payments without disclosing it or obtaining permission, then claim they cannot remove the card when asked. If they found a way to add it unlawfully, they can find a way to remove it. Billing calls involve long waits—39 minutes today—and staff are consistently dismissive.

My experience at Shady Grove has been wonderful thanks to Dr. Graham and Kayla. Dr. Graham is knowledgeable and kind, and I am grateful she remains my doctor. Kayla is exceptionally communicative and helpful, keeping me informed of appointments and responding quickly to questions. They also rescheduled a last-minute appointment to make me more comfortable, which meant a great deal. I look forward to continuing treatment at Shady Grove and highly recommend it!

I cannot express how much I dislike Dr. Shai. He told my wife and me he would get her pregnant, but she lost two children. We had two eggs; he said one was not good but still wanted to proceed, and she miscarried. Avoid these clinics. They bill your insurance and make false promises about getting you pregnant.

Last Wednesday, I went to the SGF Surgery Center in Richmond for egg retrieval. The entire experience was excellent from beginning to end! My nurse, Liz, was kind, attentive, and highly skilled. She placed my IV smoothly and explained postoperative care very well. She took excellent care of me before and after the procedure and ensured I was comfortable before discharge. Kristin, the CRNA, was outstanding and made the procedure painless—truly painless. Dr. Graham was very kind and did everything possible to complete the procedure despite difficulty visualizing my left ovary. Overall, I highly recommend this center!

Today was my third egg retrieval and the smoothest one yet. Grace was amazing—she placed my IV on the first try and made it look effortless, which had never happened before. Nikki was also wonderful. She patiently guided me through every step, kept me calm, and carefully explained the anesthesia process. Dr. Shah performed the procedure expertly, and I felt very well cared for from start to finish. The entire team made what could have been an emotional and anxious process feel safe, supportive, and professional. I am very grateful for their kindness and clinical skill.

Women are treated as the property of men here. If you are a heterosexual woman who wants control over your fertility by freezing your eggs to extend your reproductive timeline, go elsewhere. SGF added my male partner to my account without my consent and refused to remove him even though he fully agreed to it. At the same time, they completely ignored and refused to update the information for the female family member listed on my application. The entrenched sexism at this company is outrageous. I contacted them repeatedly to correct the issue, to no avail. I did not know they had added my partner to my account until I received my first egg-storage bill. Apparently their frozen eggs are stored out of state, so you are better off choosing an organization that genuinely respects women as adults with bodily autonomy.

So far, I am halfway through IVF, and the staff has been amazing and easy to talk to. They answer all my questions and always respond promptly. I encountered a problem with one of my medications, and they were there to help—they are lifesavers. Everyone on the medical team, from the Roanoke office to the Richmond office, has made me smile.

I've had a really good experience here. Staff is wonderful, the ladies in the lab are great. The front desk staff is phenomenal Lawanda is always full of joy and is a ray of sunshine to see, she has a way of making you feel welcomed and enjoys celebrating your wins with you! Dr. Johnston did an excellent job during my egg retrieval, but Allie and Jay were especially amazing! I have a history of fainting and unfortunately fainted again during recovery after the procedure. They went above and beyond to keep me safe and comfortable. The team at the SGF Surgery Center is wonderful!

Our first egg retrieval experience on February 20 was excellent. Dr. Evans-Hoeker, Preston, Autumn, Ellie, Madison, and Syd were all outstanding. They went above and beyond to make sure we understood the entire process, how I might feel after retrieval, and what to expect.

Amazing, incredible, and exceptionally caring! The SGF care team is beyond outstanding! My husband and I were fortunate to be treated by Dr. Harris, who will always hold a special place in our hearts and in our family's hearts. After three consecutive miscarriages, we came to Dr. Harris full of hope and ready to begin IVF—excited but nervous. Dr. Harris, his team, and his wonderful nurse McKenna made us feel heard and valued, and no question ever felt foolish. Our IVF journey began very well, with an excellent egg retrieval. However, it took four transfers before we finally became pregnant; we are now 9 weeks, which still feels unbelievable. Before the fourth transfer, Dr. Harris made sure everything was right and discovered extensive scar tissue, which had caused my previous miscarriages. After three surgeries—with special thanks to Autumn, Liz, Dr. Johnston, and Dr. Harris—they cared for me attentively every time. They truly are the best care team. We are now 9 weeks pregnant and eagerly awaiting our miracle baby girl. I could not have done this without the SGF team. Every morning, Hannah, Rosie, June, and McKenna patiently answered all my questions. We are incredibly grateful to have found the SGF Richmond team—we love you!

I truly love this clinic. Everyone is kind, supportive, and professional. The women at the front desk are amazing! Special thanks also to the lab staff, who always manage to complete my blood draw on the first attempt, even though my veins are difficult. Dr. Shah did an excellent job managing our cycle. Although we saw many other doctors during treatment, we always felt reassured. Honestly, everyone is wonderful. I highly recommend SGF.

Shady Grove is wonderful! As a lesbian couple, we felt very safe and comfortable here. Dr. Graham is patient, thorough, knowledgeable, warm, and caring. I had a wonderful experience with Benjamin Harris, MD, MPH at Shady Grove Fertility. From the very beginning, he was incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and thorough in explaining each step of the process. He made what could feel overwhelming much more manageable by breaking everything down in a clear and understandable way. Communication was excellent throughout my care. The online portal was easy to navigate, and I always received quick responses to my questions. The medication calendar and portal were especially helpful—very visual and easy to follow, which made a big difference during such a detailed process. His nurse, McKenna Hall, was equally amazing. She was very responsive and made sure all of my questions were answered, often coordinating directly with the doctor when needed. I always felt supported and never left wondering what to do next. The front office staff also played a big role in my positive experience. They were kind, encouraging, and even took the time to celebrate milestones along the way, which meant so much during such an emotional journey. This has been a long and sometimes difficult process, filled with fear, sacrifices, and many emotions. But having a team that consistently explained every step and reassured me made all the difference. I’m so grateful for their care and support. I’m now happily moving forward in my pregnancy journey and look forward to this new beginning. It was truly worth every sacrifice, pain, and tear.

Special thanks to Cassie, Emma, Ashley, and Brielle for protecting my privacy and making me feel safe and comfortable during my visit. They helped me get in and out smoothly without encountering a coworker who had an appointment at the same time. They went above and beyond and completed everything for me in just twenty minutes. I am incredibly grateful. In that short time, they discreetly guided me from the ultrasound to the restroom, blood draw, and back door. In my eyes, they are truly “heroes” for doing so much for me and immediately understanding my situation. Thank you so much, ladies! I had an excellent experience at Shady Grove Fertility – Stony Point. The team was supportive and professional throughout the entire process. My nurse, Maria Pafras, was outstanding—kind, welcoming, and very reassuring. Dr. Harris was extremely knowledgeable and made me feel confident at every step. I had excellent results: 17 eggs retrieved and 12 fertilized. I am very grateful and highly recommend them.

Everyone at the Stony Point clinic was wonderful. My entire experience was very pleasant. Dr. Graham and his team were always helpful and patiently answered all my questions. Hannah Moon was especially thoughtful. She came to check on me before my egg retrieval and made me feel very comfortable before the procedure. My retrieval nurse, Katie (whom I assume is the doctor's spouse), was also very kind and caring. I cannot say enough good things about the whole team! I also appreciate that they are open every day, from as early as 7 a.m. to as late as 7 p.m. (if I remember correctly). This made it easy to work around my job, even when I had to visit every few days.

Do not make the same mistake we did: we moved 500 miles away from our original clinic and were forced to come here for outside monitoring. During the uncertain weeks before and after our embryo transfer, we had to fight and argue for every appointment, wasting a tremendous amount of time. Although some staff members were more considerate than others, they were generally indifferent to our appointment requests, and some even seemed to enjoy refusing to do anything for us. Their disregard for our needs and treatment of us as second-class patients was shocking.

Shady Grove has truly been a blessing. IVF is the only way my husband and I can have a child. We felt hopeful at every appointment. As soon as you walk in, the front desk staff greet you with a smile, and after your first visit, they remember your name. These small details make you feel cared for. Every healthcare professional at the clinic loves their work, which is clear from how they interact with and care for patients. During every ultrasound, they explained everything in detail and sincerely answered every question, even those I thought were silly. A nurse is always on call to answer questions, even after hours. They also have an emergency hotline, which I called twice, and the on-call doctor returned my call within an hour both times. My most supportive nurse was McKenna Hall, who always answered every question promptly and clearly. The online portal was a lifesaver! The clinic responds very quickly, and all my questions were answered right away. I worked with two doctors during my time at Shady Grove. Dr. Harris was our primary doctor and our strongest supporter from beginning to end. When a scheduling disruption meant that we had to change doctors for our frozen embryo transfer (FET), the new doctor was very kind and treated us as though we had always been his patients, even though we had never met him before. IVF treatment is very complicated. Shady Grove breaks the process into small, easy-to-understand steps and supports you and your family at every stage. I will always be grateful to this practice.

Dr. Edelstein and Dr. Steingold helped me through several IVF cycles in 2006-2007, resulting in my son. I love Dr. E at Shady Grove!!! I lived in NoVA, and SG helped me conceive my daughter in 2004-2005. After moving here during treatment in 2006, Dr. E and Dr. S took over. Their staff provided excellent care. I highly recommend Dr. E and Shady Grove. SG's lab was advanced in 2004; I can only imagine it 21 years later. My daughter just turned 20. She was 2 weeks, 5 days gestation. Debra (formerly Pegalis)

We began our IVF journey in January 2023, and as we ended the year and welcomed 2024, I was delighted to say that we were also eagerly awaiting our baby's arrival in February 2024. Deciding to pursue IVF was something I never imagined I would need to do, but it ultimately became one of the most enriching and reassuring experiences my husband and I could have had. Dr. Edelstein is very knowledgeable, and his nurses are wonderful. Everyone at Shady Grove is personable, kind, and empathetic. I learned so much through this experience and from working with everyone at Shady Grove under Dr. E's leadership. I highly recommend them!

Dr. E, our nurses Lisa and Lindsay, and the entire Shady Grove team are incredible! My wife and I felt that everyone genuinely cared about our process and success throughout the journey and was as happy as we were when we learned about the pregnancy. I recommend Dr. Edelstein and his team 100%! We first saw him from 2016 to 2018. We were so pleased with him and his team, especially Lisa, who is the sweetest and helped me through emotional moments during our first experience, that we returned last year to complete our family. He and his entire staff were excellent and informative throughout IVF and the transfer process.
