Dr. Gerard Letterie, United States
Family has profound meaning for Dr. Gerard S. Letterie, and helping others build their own families is one of the most rewarding aspects of his work. His goal is for patients to feel involved, supported, and heard throughout treatment. He aims to help each patient move forward knowing they explored every option, did everything they could, and feel at peace with the outcome.
Dr. Letterie brought decades of respected service, research, and technology design to SRM through its merger with Northwest Center for Reproductive Sciences. A board-certified reproductive endocrinologist and a fellow and diplomate of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and American College of Physicians, he has authored more than 125 scientific articles and 25 chapters and monographs on infertility and IVF (in vitro fertilization). He has served as a contributing editor for several journals, including Fertility and Sterility, Human Reproduction, American Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Gynecology Clinical Genetics, Journal of Pelvic Surgery, Drug, and Journal of Reproductive Medicine. The second edition of his book, Surgery, Assisted Reproductive Technology, and Infertility, remains a reference for infertility and reproductive endocrinology practitioners.
Dr. Letterie's medical career included 12 years of active service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and 8 years in the reserves, ending in 2002. Before his military service, he completed an REI fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. From 1991 to 2003, he was a clinical reproductive endocrinologist at the Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Dr. Letterie continued his military affiliation as a consultant at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma and is a clinical associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Washington in Seattle and an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Letterie has designed several surgical instruments and modifications, including the first catheter for ultrasound-guided embryo transfer, now used in IVF centers worldwide. His research interests include fertility preservation for cancer patients through hormonal protection and oocyte cryopreservation, as well as elective fertility preservation.
The Puget Sound Consumers' Guide recently selected Dr. Letterie as a leading infertility practitioner, and the Consumers' Research Council of America listed him in its 2004–2005 Guide to America's Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Letterie has also been named one of Seattle's Top Doctors in recent years.
Dr. Letterie sees patients at the Seattle location. Passionate about fitness, exercise, and nutrition, he paddles on the water at 5:00 a.m. four days a week. He also enjoys creative writing.
