Throughout his career, Dr. Paupoo has trained among the best and brightest of his generation. Ranking 16th among approximately 10 000 students, he was admitted to the leading high school in the Republic of Mauritius, where he grew up. During high school, he received several local and national awards and at one point ranked first nationally in Additional Mathematics. Although known for his natural ability in mathematics and science, he ranked first in his class in nearly every subject. While preparing to apply to Ivy League schools in the United States, he earned perfect 800 scores on the SAT I Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry examinations.
Dr. Paupoo made history as the first student from the Republic of Mauritius admitted to the University of Cambridge to study medical sciences. His offer was unconditional, meaning his final high school results would not affect admission. At the time, Cambridge admitted fewer than 10 international students in medical sciences. He accepted the offer and did not apply to Ivy League schools in the United States. He was later named a science laureate after ranking among the best in the country and received a scholarship to study at a university in the United Kingdom. He also received the Cambridge ODA scholarship. At Cambridge, he earned bachelor's, master's, and medical degrees and became a physician at age 23. He conducted research in the Physiological Laboratory, known as the birthplace of IVF and the site of pioneering reproductive research.
Dr. Paupoo completed his internship at the University of Cambridge. While interning in general surgery, he decided to complete his training in the United States. In less than 6 months, he completed USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2, and the CSA examination, a process that usually takes 1 to 2 years. During the same period, he passed the MRCOG Part 1 examination, which had an approximately 25% pass rate, without attending a review course.
Dr. Paupoo then moved to the United States and began postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), receiving several awards during residency (see Awards and Honors). In his third year, he earned the highest score on the CREOG examination, taken by all OB/GYN residents in the United States. His CREOG scores ranked in the top 1% nationally throughout all 4 years of residency. One professor nicknamed him 'CREOG King.' Dr. Paupoo became an OB/GYN at age 29 and was board-certified at age 30.
His outstanding residency performance led to a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI), a highly competitive process with only about 20 fellowship positions available in the United States. During fellowship, Dr. Paupoo conducted innovative research on the potential use of gene therapy to target endometriosis. He completed his thesis and published his work in one of the field's most prestigious journals. He also earned the highest university grades in two graduate courses, biostatistics and molecular diagnostics. He completed REI training at age 32.
After fellowship, Dr. Paupoo joined Creighton University as an assistant professor, where he established the REI division. In addition to clinical practice, he taught medical students, OB/GYN residents, and endocrinology fellows. He also served as director of research in obstetrics and gynecology for 4 years.
