Traffic noise may affect reproductive function by triggering stress responses and disrupting sleep, although research on noise and infertility remains limited.
Methods and Results
Conducted in Denmark, the study analyzed data from more than 900,000 men and women ages 30 to 45 and assessed long-term exposure to particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) and road traffic noise. The Danish national patient registry provided individual data on pollution and noise exposure and socioeconomic variables.
Long-term PM2.5 exposure was associated with higher male infertility risk, especially among men ages 37 to 45. Long-term road traffic noise exposure was associated with significantly higher infertility risk in women over 35, particularly ovulatory disorders and unexplained infertility. Associations with noise were weaker in younger women and in men.
Conclusion
The study found a significant association between air pollution and male infertility and a higher infertility risk among women over 35 exposed to long-term traffic noise. Although it cannot establish causation, the findings may inform air-pollution and noise-control policies intended to improve fertility rates in Western countries.
