When treating patients, Dr. Althea O'Shaughnessy believes a direct, transparent approach serves them best. “I believe in a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to patient care. Patients undergoing treatment are already frightened enough. Truth is an effective way to address fear. I am always candid with my patients and do everything I can to ease their fears, educate them throughout their journey, and help them feel more comfortable making decisions about fertility options.”
A New York native, Dr. O'Shaughnessy completed most of her education on the East Coast. Her first exposure to science and medicine came in ninth-grade biology. “I had a teacher I connected with, and I developed a strong interest in pursuing a life in science in some way. She created a spark in me that I could not ignore,” Dr. O'Shaughnessy says.
Education
Dr. O'Shaughnessy took that spark to Hartford, Connecticut, where she earned a bachelor's degree from Trinity College, followed by a medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She returned to Connecticut to complete her OB/GYN residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center, then followed her heart back to New York for a reproductive endocrinology fellowship at Downstate Medical Center.
Dr. O'Shaughnessy's distinguished career includes practicing at institutions such as Mount Sinai Hospital, Cooper IVF in New Jersey, and the Sher Institute for Reproductive Medicine in New York.
A few years ago, the O'Shaughnessy family—Dr. O'Shaughnessy, her husband, and their 2 children—packed up and headed west to Colorado, where she joined the Conceptions team. “The decision to join Conceptions was easy for me. I was and remain drawn to Conceptions' ability to truly personalize patient care. We use science to improve each individual's chance of pregnancy rather than fitting patients into a protocol,” Dr. O'Shaughnessy says.
Individualized Patient Care
“When patients first meet me, our conversation centers on two important areas. First, I assess the patient's comfort level. If they are uncomfortable, we do everything possible to help them adjust to fertility care. Second, I provide as much education as the patient wants. The more informed I can help my patients become, the more control they have over their fertility journey. They know what to expect and that they can stop, change, or redirect treatment at any time. It is essential that patients know they are in charge.”
Dr. O'Shaughnessy also oversees Conceptions' donor egg program. “Egg donation is a very personal decision that must be made from an altruistic perspective. Without that motivation, donors cannot complete the procedures required for a successful donation. All potential donors meet with an ASRM-certified psychologist to ensure they are emotionally suited to donation as well as physically healthy.”
