Dr. Johnson earned his bachelor's degree from the United States Air Force Academy in 1974 and his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1978. After completing his obstetrics and gynecology residency (1978-1982) and fulfilling his Air Force commitment as an obstetrician-gynecologist (1982-1987), he pursued fellowship training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Medical College of Georgia (1987-1989). During his fellowship, he developed an interest in genetics research and was selected as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) fellow. During his tenure as an NIH research fellow (1989-1993), he completed an NIH clinical fellowship in medical genetics.
Dr. Johnson was an assistant professor in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Stanford University School of Medicine (1993-1996), and an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of reproductive endocrinology at the UCLA Harbor Medical Center (1996-1998).
From 2003 to 2014, he was a clinical associate professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, teaching obstetrics and gynecology residents at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix.
Dr. Johnson is both an experienced reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist and a clinical geneticist. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, subspecialty-certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and board-certified in medical genetics. He has practiced reproductive medicine in the Phoenix Valley since 2000 and is highly active in the local obstetrics and gynecology community. He is a former chair (2008-2011) and vice chair (2005-2007) of the Arizona Section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and a former president of the Phoenix Ob/Gyn Society (2004-2005).
