Madigan Army Medical Center, located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, consists of a network of Army medical facilities in Washington and California serving more than 100,000 active-duty service members, their families, and retirees. Since opening in 1944 as a temporary hospital for war casualties, Madigan has grown into a tertiary medical center offering services including general medical and surgical care, patient-centered adult and pediatric primary care, a 24-hour emergency department, specialty clinics, behavioral health, and wellness services. Madigan is proud to support a major force-projection platform as a provider of safe, high-quality care; an unmatched educational facility; a state-of-the-art research platform; a leader in readiness and deployment medicine since 1944; and a partner in the community.
As the U.S. Army's second-largest medical facility and one of its most advanced medical centers, Madigan is one of only two designated Level II trauma centers in Army Medicine and one of four trauma centers in Washington State. In the late 1990s, Madigan joined St. Joseph Medical Center and Tacoma General Hospital in a unique partnership called the Tacoma Trauma Trust, which provides care to non-beneficiary trauma patients outside Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Madigan has approximately 220 inpatient beds and can expand to accommodate more than 300 inpatients during periods of urgent need, including emergencies. Outpatients are seen in the hospital's medical mall complex, which handles nearly one million visits annually. Each day, Madigan performs more than 45 surgeries, dispenses nearly 4,000 prescriptions, and delivers 8 babies.
To maintain its reputation as an exceptional teaching facility and modern research platform, Madigan also provides outstanding graduate medical and nursing education programs. Physicians, nurses, and medical students in Madigan's graduate medical education programs consistently score in the 90th percentile on state and national examinations. Madigan's Andersen Simulation Center trains thousands of physicians, nurses, and medical personnel each year and was the first Department of Defense educational institution accredited by the American College of Surgeons.
Madigan also conducts the full range of Phase I through Phase IV clinical trials, collecting critical safety and efficacy data for health interventions.
Madigan is part of the Defense Health Agency. In the Puget Sound region, an integrated partnership of Army, Navy, and Air Force medical facilities serves more than 284,000 local TRICARE beneficiaries across western Washington. Partners include Madigan Army Medical Center, Naval Hospital Bremerton, Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor, and the Air Force's 62nd Medical Squadron. Military treatment facilities in the Puget Sound market work with TRICARE partners, Veterans Affairs hospitals, other federal healthcare organizations, private-sector teaching hospitals and medical schools, and other healthcare partners.
