Madigan Army Medical Center, located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, consists of a network of Army medical facilities in Washington and California serving more than 100,000 active-duty service members, their families, and retirees. Since opening in 1944 as a temporary hospital for war casualties, Madigan has grown into a tertiary medical center offering services including general medical and surgical care, patient-centered adult and pediatric primary care, a 24-hour emergency department, specialty clinics, behavioral health, and wellness services. Madigan is proud to support a major force-projection platform as a provider of safe, high-quality care; an unmatched educational facility; a state-of-the-art research platform; a leader in readiness and deployment medicine since 1944; and a partner in the community.

As the U.S. Army's second-largest medical facility and one of its most advanced medical centers, Madigan is one of only two designated Level II trauma centers in Army Medicine and one of four trauma centers in Washington State. In the late 1990s, Madigan joined St. Joseph Medical Center and Tacoma General Hospital in a unique partnership called the Tacoma Trauma Trust, which provides care to non-beneficiary trauma patients outside Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Madigan has approximately 220 inpatient beds and can expand to accommodate more than 300 inpatients during periods of urgent need, including emergencies. Outpatients are seen in the hospital's medical mall complex, which handles nearly one million visits annually. Each day, Madigan performs more than 45 surgeries, dispenses nearly 4,000 prescriptions, and delivers 8 babies.

To maintain its reputation as an exceptional teaching facility and modern research platform, Madigan also provides outstanding graduate medical and nursing education programs. Physicians, nurses, and medical students in Madigan's graduate medical education programs consistently score in the 90th percentile on state and national examinations. Madigan's Andersen Simulation Center trains thousands of physicians, nurses, and medical personnel each year and was the first Department of Defense educational institution accredited by the American College of Surgeons.

Madigan also conducts the full range of Phase I through Phase IV clinical trials, collecting critical safety and efficacy data for health interventions.

Madigan is part of the Defense Health Agency. In the Puget Sound region, an integrated partnership of Army, Navy, and Air Force medical facilities serves more than 284,000 local TRICARE beneficiaries across western Washington. Partners include Madigan Army Medical Center, Naval Hospital Bremerton, Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor, and the Air Force's 62nd Medical Squadron. Military treatment facilities in the Puget Sound market work with TRICARE partners, Veterans Affairs hospitals, other federal healthcare organizations, private-sector teaching hospitals and medical schools, and other healthcare partners.

I would like to share my experience at Madigan Army Medical Center, especially with its midwifery services. Although I noticed some negative reviews about the medical center overall, my experience, particularly with the midwives, was excellent. Because a nonstress test showed elevated blood pressure, I was admitted to labor and delivery one day before my scheduled induction and stayed for seven days. From the moment I arrived, I felt supported, heard, and genuinely cared for. I was encouraged to let labor progress naturally. Although my birth plan did not unfold exactly as expected, I never felt rushed or dismissed. My wishes were respected and considered throughout the process. Even on days when staffing was limited and the patient volume was clearly high, every healthcare professional I encountered remained exceptionally professional and compassionate. Each person who entered my room took time to ask about my birth plan, answer my questions, provide expert medical guidance, and make sure I felt confident in my decisions. This consistency of care was invaluable during such an important and vulnerable time. Before delivery, I also attended the CenteringPregnancy classes offered by the midwifery service, which were extremely valuable. The program provided a comprehensive approach to care, combining education about pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care with routine monthly checks of weight, blood pressure, and fetal heart rate. The midwives created an informative and engaging environment, anticipating our questions through interactive discussions, icebreakers, and hands-on infant care training. This made me feel prepared, empowered, and closely connected with the group. Overall, my experience with maternity care at Madigan, especially with the midwifery team, was outstanding. I felt supported medically, emotionally, and personally. I am deeply grateful for the care I received and would recommend JBLM Army Medical Center without hesitation to any expectant mother living on base.

I have been waiting my whole life to go to this place and cannot wait for my visit. I hope they accept me and treat my conditions. I have bladder cancer and kidney stones and have lost 150 pounds (about 68 kg). I went from 295 pounds (about 134 kg) to 250 pounds (about 113 kg) and am 60 pounds (about 27 kg) below my normal weight because I cannot afford food. My pulmonologist says I should weigh 210 pounds (about 95 kg), but I now weigh only 150 pounds (about 68 kg). I saw my pulmonologist today, and he said I would die if I did not stop smoking, but I refuse to quit. Please help me.

My wife repeatedly had problems getting blood drawn. She called but no one answered. She faxed the order several times to the number they provided, but they claimed not to have it. She went in person several times to resolve the issue and showed them the order from her outside doctor, but they said it was insufficient and had to be called or faxed in. She had to reschedule and find an outside location for the blood draw, and I am unsure whether insurance will cover it without a referral. I now understand why Madigan has such poor reviews.

I scheduled an appointment to pick up medication and drove 30 minutes to the designated location, only to find that no appointment existed. I then waited more than an hour at the pharmacy to receive the medication and was told I would have to wait another four days because I had not received an activation text. This experience was extremely frustrating and disappointing. As an organization serving military members and their families, I expected better communication and coordination.

I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the entire staff at Madigan Army Medical Center. Their consistent dedication and professionalism are unmatched. Today, I especially want to mention Dr. Tooton, who was temporarily working in the pediatric clinic. The care and thoughtfulness shown this morning were deeply moving. I could give many more examples of similar care we have received, but today I simply want to say... thank you to all the wonderful people who work there!

I and my eligible family members are patients here, and we have consistently received competent to excellent care. If anyone considers me biased, I apologize; everyone is entitled to an opinion, including me. Some reviews seem one-sided because they contain inaccurate information. To clarify, some posts may imply that Madigan Medical Center is their only option, but no one is forced to use Madigan's doctors or services. Many people who claim to have received poor or substandard care keep returning for the same services. Why continue accepting care you consider inadequate? They would rather receive any service at Madigan at no personal cost than visit a nonmilitary facility where they could receive care but would have to pay. If Madigan's services do not suit you, please find another appropriate facility. Seek care from a provider you believe is worthy of you and your family. But in fairness, if you repeatedly choose a clinic, you should not keep complaining about its service. Again, this is only my personal opinion as a patient.

This is a military-affiliated clinic. I am glad it is here so I do not have to go to Madigan. The staff are wonderful and very helpful.

I was dismissed on my very first visit ever to Madigan. It was also my last. I’m active duty and don’t have any other options, but I will die before I will ever step foot in Madigan ever again. They insist that you go to them instead of off base and they minimize everything to the point it’s not worth your time.

I was forcibly taken to the sixth floor after refusing further evaluation ordered by my commander. One staff member said they could not force me to go if I did not consent. After three or four hours in the emergency room, I said I would rather be arrested and tried to quietly pass other staff members who wanted me involuntarily admitted. I was still roughly lifted and restrained to a bed. While administering a sedative, a healthcare worker pressed her elbow against my genital area for leverage while restraining my legs. The staff member who had assured me I would not have to go if I refused later returned to apologize while I was slurring my speech and limping. She had not known I was active-duty military or that she lacked the authority to refuse me. The next day, a healthcare worker on the sixth floor apologized and said he was sorry and that their organization did not conduct this kind of “business.” I tried to report it directly without going through Veterans Affairs, but coworkers and another agency told me I had to use available resources to report it. The clinical notes also felt manipulative and placed all the blame on me.

Madigan Army Medical Center—Infertility Treatment Experience My wife and I underwent two years of infertility treatment at Madigan Army Medical Center. Looking back, those two years were completely wasted because of systemic shortcomings and a lack of genuine diagnostic effort. At Madigan, treatment felt entirely routine: repeat the same process and tests, and if they failed, simply shrug and label it “unexplained infertility.” There was no urgency, concern, or meaningful effort to determine why treatment was failing. It felt less like patient-centered care and more like going through the motions to satisfy training requirements. We later transferred to a private fertility clinic in Kirkland that truly specializes in infertility, and everything changed immediately. Instead of repeating failed processes, they investigated deeply, asked better questions, performed targeted diagnostics, and treated us as individuals rather than cases. The result? My wife is now pregnant. This outcome painfully demonstrates that Madigan's infertility care was not only inadequate, but unable to help couples who genuinely need answers. Calling a condition “unexplained” should begin a deeper investigation, not excuse giving up. Madigan may function well as a teaching hospital, but it does so at the expense of patients who need experienced specialists, continuity, and accountability. In infertility care—where time, age, and emotional burden all matter—Madigan failed us completely. If you are experiencing infertility and have another option, seek care elsewhere immediately. Our two years at Madigan cost us time we can never recover.

Absolutely the worst pharmacy program I have encountered. They truly treat you like a number rather than a patient.
    Dec 1, 2025
A complete mess. They simply do not care. They are cold, lack empathy, and know little about complex medical conditions. Do not bother contacting patient advocacy. There is absolutely no accountability.

I delivered my second baby here by cesarean section and also had gallbladder removal surgery in the same month. Honestly, I was very satisfied with everything. They explained the procedures and precautions very clearly, and I have no complaints.

Three years ago, after several suicide attempts, I was admitted to North 5. Dr. Green was not helpful at first. I struggled to make eye contact, but she did not understand and thought I avoided looking at her because I believed there was something on her face. It was actually due to my anxiety and various traumas, though I never told them about those. Singing karaoke with the nurses was enjoyable, however.
    Oct 4, 2025
Terrible. They never answer the phone. I was later told the nurse had left for the day and was supposed to pass along a message from the doctor. I will file a pediatric complaint with ICE.

The emergency room does not want you there, looks down on you, and becomes angry.

Our two children received treatment at this medical facility 17 or 18 years ago. The staff were excellent, the facility was very clean, and everyone was very helpful.

On 4/13, I went to the emergency room because of heavy bleeding during pregnancy and did not feel well... The nurse dismissively laughed at me and said, "You know this is normal, right?" That night, I had emergency surgery for an ectopic pregnancy. It was the worst experience I have ever had. The obstetricians and gynecologists were all very kind when they arrived. But the emergency room nurse was extremely dismissive... She told another nurse not to start an IV because "she will be coming soon."

Patients, please be aware that the sixth floor is currently being used to house patients with dementia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who appear very violent and should be in a psychiatric hospital. I personally saw a patient come out of a room holding something resembling a blade and ultimately had to be restrained by security. On another visit to see my aunt, I saw the same male patient fully dressed, wearing black boots that sounded like tap shoes, walking around with a heavy coffee mug as though he might hit someone. On another occasion, I witnessed this patient, fully dressed, charge at someone as if they were going to attack him with a chair. The man ran into a room and must have locked himself inside. Security and even the police were called. The hospital is acting very irresponsibly. If it truly cared about its other patients, it would not allow this to happen. I have researched dementia patients and the behavior known as "sundowning," which is often dangerous and violent. I believe this man wandering around the hospital poses a danger to himself and other patients. This absolutely should not happen! Good grief, there is a maternity ward here. Transfer this patient to an appropriate hospital immediately.

Terrible hospital, terrible emergency room, terrible experience. It must be among the worst hospital care in the country.
    Aug 26, 2025
Madigan's maternity care is terrible! My daughter was 38 weeks pregnant and was sent from the clinic to triage, where she sat for hours. The maternity doctors and nurses were rude... and completely ignored the clinic's concerns about her high blood pressure... She is now 39 weeks pregnant... still has high blood pressure, vomits every day, has all kinds of discomfort, and cannot go to the hospital for an evaluation? This has been a terrible pregnancy experience!

My husband had knee surgery here, and the care team was the best I have ever encountered in a hospital. You truly feel well cared for. They treat you with compassion, professionalism, and a touch of humor, which is exactly what a patient in severe pain needs. Madigan Hospital is wonderful!

If I could rate labor and delivery separately, I would give them 10 stars. My delivery experience was incredible, and I am very grateful to the nurses and staff there. However, if I could rate the OB-GYN clinic separately—which I cannot, perhaps because they do not want negative reviews—I would give it the lowest rating. Scheduling is nearly impossible, you cannot call the clinic directly, and you never see the same doctor twice. As a postpartum mother, I truly feel that the clinic does not care about me or any of its patients. I am doing everything possible to obtain a referral to another OB-GYN clinic so I do not have to continue receiving substandard care. Do yourself a favor and seek care elsewhere so you do not feel like just a number to them.
    Jul 15, 2025
What is the point of patient advocacy if it only tells patients to complain to ICE? They simply relay the problem back to patients and say they cannot do anything.
    Feb 28, 2025
This place is a mess. Here are my main complaints: MHS GENESIS Portal Madigan Laboratory OB/GYN Clinic MHS GENESIS Portal: You cannot send a direct message to a specific nurse or PCM with questions. There is no option to schedule future appointments. If your PCM has no availability that month, you are out of luck and cannot message them about refills or concerns. You also cannot view future openings to schedule in advance. Madigan Laboratory: I had to go several times because they mishandled my lab results. They recently switched to a new genetic testing provider. I was stuck twice for two different lab orders, but somehow they used my blood to run the same test twice, so I now have duplicate results. The laboratory technicians all seem stressed and unhappy. They clearly do not get along, and the work environment is tense. Avoid going around lunchtime. Everyone returns irritable and miserable. OB/GYN Clinic: I have barely visited because I refuse to give birth here. When you have questions, they push the work onto you with very little guidance. They take a long time to update your records in the MHS portal, and I do not trust that they enter information correctly. Because they must do this manually, expect long delays. One day, I missed an OB appointment, and somehow someone else’s lab results appeared in my MHS portal beneath my recent results. Final thoughts: If possible, obtain approval to use a civilian hospital within your network. You will save yourself a headache.

The staff at Madigan are extremely racist. I truly hate that, as a person of color, when your body is already struggling, you cannot even receive proper care and respect from those who are supposed to help you. Black men and women are not treated equally even in healthcare, and that is frightening. Imagine your child not receiving proper care because of their skin color. Madigan is disgraceful, and the staff should be ashamed of how they treat and neglect people of color. Even if you arrive first and have waited for hours, they will care for white patients before you. I pray they experience this disrespect themselves.
    Feb 21, 2025
They are all very friendly, and the facility is very clean.
    Feb 13, 2025
*Dermatology Center* The doctor and Nurse Laura were wonderful! I was in and out in under an hour! Nurse Laura had an excellent bedside manner, especially when administering anesthetic medication. I highly recommend these women! :-)
    Feb 2, 2025
They saw me quickly when I went in as a patient, which was good. The reason for the two-star review is that they do not seem to take their work seriously. They seem more focused on getting rid of you than addressing your medical problem.
    Feb 4, 2025
Absolutely terrible! They do not care about patients, especially obstetric patients. The front desk is rude, and they blame you for becoming upset about their poor attitude. I called a supervisor, but no one helped me, and the front desk even had the nerve to argue with me on the phone. I have never in my life been treated so terribly in healthcare, especially by front desk staff. Extremely rude and hostile!
    Feb 7, 2025
I would give no stars if I could. I often wait more than forty minutes before the call disconnects. This is the fourth day I have tried to call the clinic for an appointment. I tried the appointment line, but for some reason they could not help schedule me and said I needed to contact the clinic directly. I have contacted patient advocates, and every time I call they give me a different story, a new number, and a new reason they cannot find me in the system. Registration confirmed that I am in the system. I am about to run out of an important medication, and the patient advocates know this, but everyone still has a different understanding of the situation, and I cannot reach the clinic to make an appointment. I do not know why this place is such a mess.

The military hospital is an absolute joke. The doctors are extremely rude and have no compassion. They do not care about you; they only want to get you in and out. They make you feel foolish for seeking help. I will never return. Never in my life has a doctor made me feel bad for bringing my sick child in for an examination.
