News | At-Home Ovulation Monitoring: A More Private, Affordable IVF Option

Research indicates that monitoring ovulation at home during in vitro fertilization (IVF) is as effective as hospital monitoring. Home monitoring is more comfortable for patients and can substantially reduce pressure on hospital facilities. Amsterdam UMC researcher Tijtske Zaat said, “With home ovulation monitoring, women need only one hospital visit for embryo transfer, compared with 3 to 4 visits for hospital monitoring. This approach is more sustainable and can reduce treatment costs by up to 80%.” The findings were published today in The Lancet.

Home monitoring is as effective as hospital monitoring

Amsterdam UMC and Jeroen Bosch Hospital led the Antarctica-2 study to improve fertility treatment. It included 1,464 women from 23 hospitals in the Netherlands and was funded by ZonMW. Researchers compared home and hospital ovulation monitoring for timing frozen embryo transfer. Participants were divided into two groups: 732 monitored urinary hormone levels at home, while 732 were monitored in hospital.

Among women with natural ovulatory cycles, home and hospital monitoring produced no difference in pregnancy or live birth rates.

Sustainability and global impact

The data show that home monitoring can effectively replace hospital monitoring, particularly for frozen embryo transfer. Zaat said, “As the climate changes, healthcare sustainability is increasingly important. Limiting healthcare costs where possible is also essential. Home monitoring helps optimize our existing resources.”

Greater patient autonomy

Participants reported that home monitoring offered more privacy and a greater sense of control throughout treatment. Fewer unnecessary appointments and less travel also provided financial and environmental benefits.

Study leader Femke Mol added, “Reducing travel benefits the environment, while completing most of the treatment at home also makes the process more affordable.”
