Knowledge | Sabrina the Teenage Witch Star Melissa Joan Hart Expecting Third Child and Discusses Pregnancy and Birth Plans
Melissa Joan Hart, known for starring in Clarissa Explains It All, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Melissa & Joey, is not only an actor but also an author, director, and producer.
Recently, she added another role: mother of three.
She and her husband, Mark Wilkerson, announced the pregnancy in April (month 4). Now in her third trimester, Melissa discussed how this pregnancy differs from her first two, her view on learning the baby’s sex, and her birth plan.
“This Time, I Am Not Afraid”
At age 36, Melissa was already the mother of two boys, 6-year-old Mason and 4-year-old Braydon. She felt calmer about her third pregnancy: “I was quite afraid the first two times, but this time I am much more relaxed. Maybe it is experience, or maybe I have more confidence in myself.”
She was also candid about the physical discomfort of the third trimester:
“I would not call it complaining, because all three pregnancies have been healthy. But honestly, this one has been especially uncomfortable,” she said with a laugh. “I had a lot of nausea early on, major hormonal changes, and rapid weight gain. At three months, I already felt nine months pregnant.”
Keeping the Sex a Surprise This Time
Melissa said they decided not to learn the baby’s sex in advance: “I had always wanted to do this, but I was too curious the first time, and the ultrasound technician accidentally revealed it the second time. This time, I was determined to keep some mystery.”
Unmedicated childbirth is the goal, even after 10 hours of laboring at home
Melissa had a clear plan for the upcoming birth. She recalled:
“The first delivery was highly medicalized, with oxytocin and an epidural. The second time, I chose the most natural approach possible, without even being connected to monitors, and labored at home for 10 hours before going to the hospital.”
This time, she hoped again for an unmedicated birth, “but I will remain flexible depending on how my body is doing.”
Two Excited Older Brothers Change Their Preference Between a Brother and Sister
Melissa smiled when discussing her sons’ expectations: “They are even more excited than I am. At first, they really wanted a sister, especially Mason, who loves little girls. Recently, they changed their minds and said they want a brother.”
The family felt both excitement and anticipation, but the experienced mother approached it calmly.
Nutrition expert Anna Maria Siega-Riz, PhD, noted: “Although many pregnant women report strong cravings for certain foods, there is still no conclusive scientific evidence that these specific cravings represent a true physiological mechanism.”
