Knowledge | The Joys and Challenges of Conceiving Twins: One Mother's IVF Journey and a Look Back Ten Years Later

Ten years ago, Maureen Downey of Decatur, Georgia, and her husband, Bo Emerson, conceived twins, Rebecca and Joey, through in vitro fertilization (IVF). Although the couple had previously conceived naturally and had two children, Maureen experienced several consecutive miscarriages while trying for a third child and ultimately decided to seek assisted reproductive treatment.

Maureen was 42 that year. Her doctor transferred two embryos. She was not specifically trying for twins, but she was open to the possibility.

“I did hope both embryos would implant. It wasn't that I had to have twins; I just thought it would be nice if both succeeded.”

She added that if this were someone's only chance to become a mother, she could understand why they might want two babies at once. But because she already had two children and the goal was simply to have a third, she let events take their course.

The Pregnancy Was Relatively Uneventful, but the Real Challenge Began After Delivery

Maureen's twin pregnancy was relatively smooth, at least without requiring bed rest. Still, she said it was much harder than her first two pregnancies.

“The last six weeks were exhausting. I had never had heartburn before and once thought I was having a heart attack. One minor problem followed another. None was serious on its own, but together they were physically and emotionally draining.”

Rebecca and Joey were ultimately born by cesarean section at 39 weeks, nearly full term. After surgery, however, Maureen had severe postpartum hemorrhage and lost nearly one-third of her blood, leaving her profoundly anemic and weak.

“I came home nearly depleted, and it took a full year to regain my strength and energy.”

Experienced Parents Caught Off Guard by Twins

Despite already having raised two children, Maureen and her husband were still unprepared for caring for twins.

“We had prepared baby clothes, diapers, bottles, and everything else, and thought we were ready. But on the first night home, there were wet clothes to change, spit-up, and one unexpected problem after another. We didn't even have time to open the packages. We had no idea they could create so much work.”

She described that period as a complete parenting storm:

“The first year is a total blur, especially because we had no nanny or family helping us. Besides rebuilding my own strength, there was the pressure of breastfeeding around the clock. Everything came at us twice over.”

Twins Are a Traveling Show of Chaos

Looking back on ten years of parenting, Maureen laughed that she is someone who enjoys chaos, so even when the twins turned the house upside down, she enjoyed it. But she acknowledged that not every family can manage the challenge easily.

“Twins are like their own small touring show. They're loud and lively, and everything takes twice the effort. Even a trip to the supermarket means carrying two children and fastening two car seats.”

Maureen said she and her husband were not sensitive to noise and had grown used to it. But when friends with only one child visited, they were often startled by the combined noise of four children.

“I can see their faces twitch, especially when the twins get loud. The volume really is in stereo.”

A Reflection Ten Years Later: You Won't Regret It, but Don't Assume It's Easy

Maureen said that despite the difficulties along the way, she has never regretted choosing IVF or having twins. She simply hopes parents considering a similar path will be emotionally prepared and have realistic expectations.

“Twins are adorable, but don't be misled by a romanticized image. They don't bring twice the ease; they bring twice the challenges. At the same time, they also bring many times the joy.”
